I finally got a new telephoto lens and this one checks almost all of the boxes! It is only missing the f4 check box to be the perfect lens! f5.6 turns out to not be a deal breaker anyway so I am off to the races! This little lens is compact yet suffers from almost zero distortion from what I can tell in my images, and the clarity is uncanny. This is what a compact telephoto lens should be like. Nikon sure hit it out of the park with the 500mm pf f5.6 telephoto!

Thanks for the shout out, David! You saw lots of cool birds. The songbirds wearing the masks are Ceder Waxwing. They are very photogenic and among my very favorites. I haven't gotten a photo of one in probably over a year. You know I don't print much but I do have a printed and framed Cedar Waxwing photo on the wall at home. I'd love to have that lens and I think it and the 300PF are a huge innovation from Nikon. Love the great Blue Heron Photo rule of thirds with reflections. Very beautiful!

Hi David! I just got the 500mm PF lens. I got it because of its compactness and weight. I’ve only used it on my D500 with the 1.4tc and I’ve liked the results. I want to try it on the Z6 with the 1.4tc like you did in the video. Just waiting for a warmer day here in PA to be out and about! Did you have the Z6 on DX mode or FX? Thanks for sharing your video!
@davidsaylors

I shot in FX mode, it never occurs to me to change modes when I am out shooting. 🙄📸
@Gazzab6

You were querying about the A/M or M/A selection switch. In M/A mode, if you accidentally turn the manual focus ring even while pressing your focus button, the lens will attempt to focus manually. It's best left on A/F setting as you have to turn the manual focus ring a lot more for the lens to override the button type focus reducing the chance of missing focus. Steve Perry discusses the function in his review video of the lens.

Awesome! Thank you for the clarification because, I honestly could not tell a difference between them. I was scrutinizing the differences though, so I guess that is why I thought they were the same. I really appreciate it. 👍📸

Well this is a surprise. Had no idea you got that lens but sounds like it’s a keeper. Have you tried it without the teleconverter? Bet it would work really well on the D500 too. Love that heron image with the reflections of the trees. That would make a nice painting.

Yeah, it is incredible on the D810 with out the teleconverter and for the photo, I am really thinking about printing it and framing it.

Took the step to switch my old and heavy 500mm f4 for this one. The light weight did it for me - I barely used the heavy one anymore. I got it last week, will test more tomorrow but first observations: works great with the d500, a bit slower with the d810 but image quality is great. Slower shutter speeds normal vr is best, for faster speeds sport vr is. Thanks for making the review!
@davidsaylors
@davidsaylors 3 жыл бұрын
If you can live without the extra stop of light, this thing is the “right stuff”... f4 does help sometimes though. So I end up compensating with slower shutter speeds and this makes for blurry photos at times.

Nice. I just put a 200F2 review up. I have a 200-500 and the 600 F4 and was thinking of getting this for the wife cause she cant use the 600 F4 as its way too heavy for her and the 200-500 is still a little heavy. The PF would prob be more he size and weight.

@@davidsaylors I usually put my thumb on top of the tripod foot and curl my fingers and rest the bottom of the foot on the side of my index finger..People are always saying that's the wrong way to shoot but in sniper school the first thing that is taught is touch the rifle with the least amount of your body as possible because you have micro muscle movements that are involuntary..I'm no bird except by any means but judging by your description of the bird that you said was in the dead tree I would say it's a juvenile Red Tailed Hawk..
@davidsaylors

Yes sir. They call it sympathetic muscle movement. It is a thing, that is why I didnt use the buttons on the lens for focus, same problem. Thanks for the ID too, I wasnt sure if it was some sort of owl or what. It was WAY up there too so that made it even harder to tell. Lol

Hi everyone! please share your experience with your Nikon d850+nikkor 500 f5,6 lens if you also use this combo. With using at least 1/2000 speed and low iso we experienced unreliable focus accuracy. In Af-c mode Vr-on handheld we (on 2pcs of this combo) got 50% blurry results which were not front or back focus but blurry despite having the focus point on the subject.we are so disappointed because of the high investment without getting real help from nikon service Hungary.:-((
@davidsaylors
@davidsaylors 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure what to tell you. It is possible that you have a bad lens from the sounds of things. I normally dont shoot anywhere near that fast of a shutter speed with mine and the images are great. Did you see my videos where I went shooting with my D810 in Florida? That was a similar setup to your 850 and it worked well for me there. Good luck on diagnosis and correction of your problem!👍📸

@Zsolt H try using VR in Sport mode or turn it off.
@Gazzab6
@Gazzab6 2 жыл бұрын
@Zsolt H also there are users that are now thinking that because the lens is so light, it is very easy to wander off your subject while trying to track it so because there's more movement, there's an increased chance of blurred shots. I found this at first but with practice I've increased my success rate.

Is 5.6 enough for wildlife at dawn ?
@davidsaylors
@davidsaylors 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, as long as you have a good sensor, like the D500 has or the Z6. Something with larger photosites helps a lot. But to be honest, as soon as the sun breaks the horizon, there is plenty of light. I shot the elk last November with the 200-500 f5.6 with the 1.4x teleconverter (making it a 700mm f8) and it was early morning and the photos look great. No noise at all that I can see and the D810 has athing with shadow noise... If you are serious about wildlife though, the 500mm f4 or even the 600mm f4 is probably where you should be looking.
