Nice review. I would like to add that the flash sync speed of this camera is 1/500s! I bought mine with the excellent Nikkor 18-55 VR II. I paid little money for the body CHF 29.00 and I am very happy with the results. The colors are truely outstanding. The pictures have a film-like look. My other camera is a Sony A7II. It is used with vintage X-Fujinon lenses.

Wonderful video. My first DSLR was a Nikon D40. I sold it on eBay to finance an upgrade to the D90, though I now wish I had kept it. I concur with the points made in this video; they are spot on. Recently, CCD sensor cameras, like the one in the D40, have been gaining popularity. These sensors are believed to produce better colors compared to the CMOS sensors that are used in all cameras today. However, CCD sensors have a couple of downsides: they offer a limited dynamic range and perform poorly in terms of noise at higher ISO settings. Interestingly, these limitations are now becoming appealing features to many photographers. So while the D40 is probably at its all time lowest resale price, I believe the value of this camera will start to go up.

Thanks for another great video and photos David! You motivated me to go out for a bright, cold, and windy beach walk today with my old D60 (similar to the D40 I believe). I agree with you. There is a special quality to the colors these old dslrs are capable of in the right conditions.

Really beautiful little camera. I use it mainly with the 85mm f/1.8 for street photography. And images are gorgeous. Colors are really pleasant.

I wonder how us old photographers could ever function and even be able to take a photo when I hear modern evaluations which as so concerned with the drawbacks of stuff like only 3 focusing points. We only had one single focusing ring and the depth of field to work with, but just had to manage, even with such tricky limitations!

I did a wedding with a Nikon D40 in 2008. I used a Nikon 18 70 afs DX lens with it. The photos were beautiful.

I just bought a D40X a couple weeks ago with two lens and back pack for $100.00 and it looks new and takes some really nice shots.

I wondering why the 1/500s flash sync speed of the D40 was downgraded to 1/200s in the D40x. Are both atainable with external (Nikon) flashes or only with the built in one?

To me silver dslr bodies are the new hip retro, You have to wear clothes from the 90s to carry proudly. I didn't have the D40 as my first DSLR I went with the first Canon Rebel silver body 6mp variant, I payed for it at about 1k usd in the end of the 90s, now you can get it for 25 bucks, I went with the D40x with my second DSLR which was an even better camera in the late 2000s. Now the D40x can be had for 40usd.

Can you connect it to an iphone or ipad for viewing? I'm sure it's too old for bluetooth, but I know next to nothing about cameras.

Any recommendations to how clean sensor?
