Yes - I realized that the laptop took up more space than I expected. I usually don't have it in the frame or at least taking up that much space. Thanks and I am glad you found the video helpful. Do let me know if you have any questions - I have been shooting with both cameras for over 2 months.

I normally watch the occasional review videos of cameras here and there on KZfaq, but yours take the cake by far. You are a quick speaker, and you pack a lot of good detail in these things that most people would not bother talking about, like nit-picky setting change differences that would drive me nuts had I bought the D5200. Hats off to you. Keep the reviews coming!

Hi there, great review! I want to get into fashion photography and the camera will be used mostly to take photos by itself set on a tripod. I'll mostly take full body shots, close up photos, and will also be making product review videos in the future. I'll mostly rely on the features inherent in the camera and won't be buying many accessories. I'd like the photos to be HQ and vibrant - Which is a better camera for me? Canon eos 600d, 700d or Nikon d5200? And, if it were you and all of these cameras were at the same price - which would you choose as the best all-rounder?

Hi Rob- I really do like the T5i with 18-135 STM as an all around system, the touchscreen is useful and beginner friendly. Canon does a nice job with the situations you mentioned. There are links under the video to purchase and I am happy to answer additional questions.

First of all, great video, sinthetic and accurate. Then, i want to indroduce myself in films production, maybe beginning with short videos/music videos. So my subjects would be very different, from nature to people and so on. I don't know anything about technical parametres and i'm personally more fashinated by Canon because it seems more easier to use BUT what do you recommend me to do? (sorry for my non-perfect english)

For D5200 I like the SIgma 17-70 f/2.8-f/4 lens. On the T5i I really like the 18-135 STM but if low light image quality is your primary need you could pick up a prime lens with a very wide maximum aperture like 50 f/1.8, 85 f/1.8 (great for indoor auditoriums) or that Sigma 17-70 would also be helpful or Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. Lots of options. I am happy to chat more about which is most useful for you.

Hi Rob. Thanks for the nice review. I am looking around and trying to choose my first DSLR. I had initially chosen the Canon 70D, but I'm now a little short on budget, so I have to settle for a cheaper body. I'll be mainly using the camera for clinical photography (I'm a dentist), using dedicated macro lenses (60mm or 100mm) and a macro ring flash. I'll shoot on manual mode using aperture f11 for full face shots and f22 for teeth close-ups. First question is: would the Canon touch screen be useful for focusing while shooting on manual? Or that only works with auto focus? Second question: I will roughly take 12/15 pictures for every patients, most of them using the 'close-up' setting. I'll also need to use intraoral mirrors and retractors in order to frame all I need to. That means it'll take me around 3 minutes once I gain the necessary experience. I'll hod thr camera with one hand most of the time: which camera+macro lenses+macro flash is the lightest and/or easily manageable? (You said the grip is slightly better on the Canon). Thank you very much.

Honestly you can upload directly with either camera but the Nikon tops out at 20minutes and the Canon will go to 30 minutes. Also the touchscreen on the T5i is really nice to work with for video. Links to best prices on Amazon are under the video. Happy to answer more questions.

There aren't many reasons I recommend the 60D over the T5i. Take a look at this page digital.photorecommendations.com/recs/2013/07/canon-t5i-vs-60d-vs-70d/ D5200 I am less crazy about. Little on the slow slide.

I am very impressed that you actually take the time to answer the comments. Hi! I am planning to buy my first DSLR (mostly for shooting videos); I was going to choose the D5200 but then I saw that most of the videos that are shoot for testing stabilizers or sliders are filmed with Canon cameras. As these two are on a similar price, which one do you recommend for videos?

Couple of questions, what did you use to shoot this youtube video and what format did you use, it is great !. My second question is for t5i, I wanted to use the hotshoe for external flash, but it would not fire. It is a generic vivitar flash. Is there any settings on the T5i that I should be adjusting? Thank you for the review. I'm searching for a camera for introducing myself to photographic. I'm worried about the image quality but could not paid for my first option Nikon D7100. I'd like also Canon cameras, and don't want to spend a lot on additional lenses (at least at the beginning), that's why I thought 700D pack could be a good option. Do you think image quality on Canon 700d is good enough? Do you think 18 mpx are enought? And what about battery live? Better on D5200 or 700D?

They are almost identical in terms of live view autofocus but the Canon with an STM lens does it more smoothly and silently. So it has the appearance often of being faster.

Hi Toby! I keep going back and forth between which of these cameras to buy and was wondering if you could help me? I am a complete beginner that will be studying photography in september,I want something for both photos and video recording. I have a fair number of crooked shots too, this is one of the many reasons I love Lightroom, it is very easy to correct slight slants. Otherwise you can buy hot shoe levels or just carefully eyeball it as best you can before taking the shot.

Thanks for your reply Toby. Would love the video. I did follow the instructions but I may have missed a few steps or not been patient enough. Will try the night time shots again. Another thing I notice is that my shots are not straight, though i am using a tripod. It doesnt have a bubble level. How can I adjust this? Thanks

The T6i will probably be released sometime next year. You could always be waiting for the *next* camera ;) And remember for at least the first few months prices are several hundred dollars more than where the T5i is priced now.

Thank you for a great review! I'm new to DSLRs and have done tons of research, but still cannot make up my mind. Maybe you can help provide a bit more insight for me? I originally set out to purchase a T5i, but was told it was "too much" camera for starting. I settled and bought a D3200, but ended up returning, because it didn't have the articulating screen that meant a lot more to me than I realized. I love that the touch screen on the T5i makes it simpler to use and that you can adjust aperature in live view; however I feel like the Nikon's images are a bit sharper and I like the HDR feature better than the T5i--can this also be fixed while editing? I'll be using the camera for casual use (vacations, kids eventually), but want high quality/"professional" looking images. I would like to learn photography well enough to do it as a side profession/hobby. I just want to make sure I don't regret the choice I make and money I spend. A few other questions I have are: What editing software would you recommend (Mac user)? Do you recommend shooting in RAW or JPEG? And are there major differences in using the view finder vs. live view? Thank you so much for your guidance!

My requirements: Like to take good vacation photos, portrait, moving pics like kids, pets and also low lighting good image (Los vegas night photos& fireworks with people image). I heard T5i doesn't have no image shacking control. It should not over expose when i use any flash or under exposed without flash. - Pls suggest - Appreciate your help.!

I would love to have heard what you think of manual focus using Live View between these two cameras. I have a d5200 and the live view is almost worthless for critical manual focusing. My 40D was head and shoulders above the d5200 in live view.

hi pegg - T5i with 18-135 or the 18-55 will be great. Both those lenses get close enough for food photography. You should consider adding an external flash or getting a nice prime lens if you want those very bright/clean looking images. How is the light in your kitchen? good daylight?

Hi Toby, I've always been a Canon user and I am deciding which camera is the better buy. I started with an SLR (I have some EF lens) before the digital camera came about, but since switching to a digital camera, I've always stuck with super zoom cameras. I kind of miss the flexibility a SLR camera offers and I was thinking of switching to a DSLR, but yet want the portability of carrying the camera everywhere so that I dun miss a shot. Which would you recommend: 700D, 100D, G6 or D5200?

I plan to. It is not same sensor though- it is the D7100 sensor which is even a tiny bit better and without the AA should be very sharp.
