Nikon D610: Do you even need a full frame (dSLR) camera?

Are you considering upgrading from crop sensor camera to full frame camera? Have you been using a crop sensor dSLR and wondering if you should take advantage of the lowering prices of used full frame dSLR cameras. In this video I discuss if it makes sense to make the move to full frame camera or could it actually hurt your photography. I bought a Nikon D610 and I’ve been happy with what it can do. At the same time I argue that the large size of this camera makes it less likely for you to capture very good photos. It’s not going to improve your photography but it will make the pictures look technically cleaner. Is this a good enough reason to upgrade? It could be if you are a professional photographer who needs to sell photos. If you are a regular camera user it may not give you any advantages. In any case I’ll show you my Nikon D610 and tell you what I like and dislike about it. You will also see quite a few photos in this video. I’m showing Fujifilm photos as well to draw comparisons between Nikon and Fujifilm - my two favorite camera manufacturers.

people dont think mirrorless is the only way for decent photos, it just does EVERYTHING DSLRs can do, and more, but BETTER, and in a smaller form factor. The camera in this video literally shoots 1080 p video at 30 frames per second. The technology is obsolete, there is genuienly no benefit to DSLRS. They even make large mirrorless cameras for a more robust form factor, so like, not to be redundant, but there is literally nothing a DLSR does better than mirrorless cameras.

@@hunterhawkins8754 The images from my D610 are simply suberb. Its the glass that counts for image quality. I bet that if full frame, DSLR images were shown side by side with mirrorless, I doubt if anyone could tell the difference. I have absolutely no interest in the video side of things, never ever use it. Selling my DSLR gear (i have a fair bit) to go mirrorless is a non starter. I agree with your last sentence, but also the other way round.

@tom_photo
@tom_photo 2 ай бұрын
Hi CrispinDoThings! Thank you very much for watching. I'll be happy to help you. The two cameras you are mentioning are both very fine and I've used both. The D610 is a full frame camera and much larger, the D3500 is a crop sensor and smaller. What matters much when shooting fast pace movements is what lens you are using (it needs to be able to let in a lot of light; you need small F-stop values). It is also important that the camera is able to focus fast. Focusing speed depend both on the camera and the lens. Of the two cameras the D610 is faster at focusing but it is a larger camera and therefore less convenient to carry along. Probably one of the better lenses for fast focusing is the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/meBhnJZpv621ZYk.html). It will work with both cameras. If you want something small and fast I'd also recommend you to check out Sony cameras. I'm no expert on Sony but they seem to be able to focus fast. Kind regards!

I'm tempted to go with APSC Fuji mirrorless. Mostly because the price and size. The new releases from 2022 and 2023 are great value for photo and video (XH2, XH2S, XT5, XS20) and in a price bracket that is far from Sony, Nikon or Canon. And you have good legacy cameras for cheap to try. My only "problem" is that you only have APSC, no full frame. I think i will wait.

Amazing video Tom. I'm also in a position to buy a camera for myself for cheap, and seems like the prices of these old DSLR have been falling like rocks. I have a few manual focus Nikkor AIS lenses, so I figured I should get a Nikon DSLR. However, I just love the vintage Fujifilm styling and their portability aspect, even though their sensor are crop. Recently I have found out about speedboosters which returns the focal length of your lenses to its original glory. Do you recommend using a speed booster with an aps-c body? Many thanks!
@tom_photo
@tom_photo 9 ай бұрын
Hi Dat Vu! Thank you very much! I'm also a Fuji and Nikon user. Most of my cameras are Fuji. I like my Fuji cameras a lot and the fact that they are crop sensor cameras can be viewed as an advantage. The are much smaller and Fuji image quality is amazing. With the newest Fuji models I think that the advantages of full frame are fading away. My Fuji X-T30 with its crop sensor is not behind Nikon D610 with its full frame (maybe even the other way around). For most users I do not very clearly see the benefits of getting full frame. That said, the full frame dSLR cameras are great and their prices are really falling as you correctly stated. So, if you can get one for a very good price, why not give it a try anyway. Speed boosters are nice but since the existing Fuji systems and lenses are so great I personally do not see a clear need for them. Kind regards!

@@tom_photo thank you! I'll let you know what I end up having although the upgrade path on the Nikon system seems a lot clearer (D610->D810->D850->mirrorless?) whilst in Canon, the jump from the 6D to the mark II is very minor, in fact you lose some dynamic range on the process so I don't think is really worth it, and from there it doesn't make sense to get the 5DIII either because you don't gain either resolution or dynamic range but only a tougher construction and a few minor features so that leaves the 5DIV as the only feasible option and then you're at the end of the road although that camera can last you a lifetime if you wanted to. I know I'm looking quite ahead but it does matter to know that you can still have "wiggle room" within the DSLR system before you're "forced" to go mirrorless. Anyways, thank you! :)
@tom_photo

@@elmachomen Absolutely, Kevin, I'd like to hear which camera you end up getting and what was the final argument that led to the decision. I must admit that I do not know enough about all the Canon cameras (I'm mostly about Fuji and Nikon). But I think it boils down to user experience for the most part. Quality wise they are all really great options. I do agree with the dSLR giving you some "wiggle room". This is a good way to put it. The dSLR world is quite wonderful because of all the nice lenses you can get for a really good price these days. Kind regards!

I hope you went with the 6d. No dude, the D610 is not WAY better. True, the DR is better with the D610 in the lower ISO range. And on paper the D610 seems to pull ahead. But we shoot in the real world & that is where the 6d holds it's own. AF in seriously low light doesn't even compare. The D610 hunts, whilst the 6d grabs focus. Then there's the true high ISO performance, not the stuff dxo tries to sell you. Glass to one side, I'd pick up the D600 for landscapes in good light. For portraits, either can work in controlled light, with an edge to the Nikon flash system. But when the light goes down or the subject starts to move, give me the 6d

Hi just bumped into you on utube. Telling it like it is and just very honest. Buying a very clean 2nd hand d600 with 12000 clicks . Is this a lot for this type of camera. The owner is upgrading to mirrorless but rates the d600 highly. Thanks
@tom_photo
@tom_photo 6 ай бұрын
Hi Mark! Thank you very much for watching and posing this question. The shutter count of 12,000 is low for this type of camera. It is rated to go to at least 150,000, so the camera is still young. If it is well cared for, then this is a good deal. The D600 can sometimes have an 'oily shutter' problem. This means that the shutter mechanism can splash small droplets of oil onto the sensor. Not all units have the same problem, and chances are very good that if nothing happened until 12,000 clicks, nothing will happen in the future either. When you buy, take a look at the sensor and confirm that it is clean. If it is clean, ask the previous owner if they have cleaned the sensor. Try to probe the situation to find out if they are selling because of the oily shutter problem. The D610 should be mostly free of this problem. However, I've talked to several D600 owners who say they never had any problems. Let me know if you need more help. I'm always happy to assist. Best of luck to you!

Hi! Thank you for asking. First of all these cameras are all very good options. The D700 is oldest technology and therefore the most affordable. It offers no video and is the heaviest of them all. But unlike others its max shutter speed goes to 8000. This is an advantage when shooting with bright lenses wide open. It also has a less Mpix than the others. This may not be a problem because it makes the pixel area greater. The D750 offers most options, including a tilting screen, wireless connection etc. It is also quite expensive. The D610 offers the best of both worlds. It is quite a bit more capable than the D700 and more affordable than the D750. I hope I could help you. Kind regards!

@@trandugold Well having a D700, I'd honestly would tell you to try it, it has some beautiful colours and quite often I get pictures from it and the D300S that I just like right after loading them into the RAW converter. It has also very low and very aesthetic noise, basically monochromatic noise. And the dynamic range is just awesome. The only thing i would really recommend is to turn off the internal noise reduction in all modes and let a RAW converter's modern AI noise removal do that if necessary, like when you to to ISO 6400 or higher. I tried 8000 ISO once, but that was with noise reduction and it it got soft. I got the D300S as cheap entry and the D700, because I always wanted one, since it came out, but could never afford it and I needed portrait camera for my mother's 75th birthday. Combined it there with a Nikkor 35-70mm F2.8D, an absolute steal of a Lens, the Nifty-Fifty Nikkor 50mm AF-D F1.8 and a Metz 58 AF-1 Flash. And it made my life very easy, great skin tons, great colours, sharp enough, but not overly sharp, as the 35-70mm F2.8 is known for being very sharp, but without the hightened Micro-contrast of modern lenses. Perfect for photographing women. It is an absolute pity that Metz doesn't make flashes anymore, as those are some of the best flashes around with beautiful light and dual reflectors, aka a main flash and a smaller secondary included, which really helps with colour balance and lighting. Since then it has served me well, it's great for indoors and low light photography and an awesome portrait camera. The D700 has now become my primary, with the D300S settling more into my aviation photography and Wildlife camera role. I must admit though, I am looking at a D500 next, as the AF and overall performance is better on that. On the other Hand the D300S has very nice colours, similar to the D700 but a bit more gritty. And the ISO performance is much more limited. It is a chonker, but takes a beating and the weather sealing is still good, great if you are an outdoors photographer. Works nicely with the AF-S 200-500mm F5.6E and the Tamron 15-30mm F2.8 (G1). The latter seems to outperform the sensor a bit though. I'd love to have gone for the 14-24mm F2.8, which was it's contemporary, but given that the Tamron 15-30mm F2.8 is better optically, has the more useful focal length and costs half the Nikon Lens, on top of being 1.5 instead of 1.78 kilos, I could not justify buying the Nikkor. Yeah the resolution isn't as high as the D610, but enough for most online stuff and the AF-Module is more capable than the D600/D610. Also the whole shutter spilling oil on the sensor problem doesn't exist. And the D700 is very good at making old lenses shine, also the MB-D10 is really, really cheap and if you have big hands, it is very comfortable to use with the MB-D10. It also balances long lenses beautifully. Additionally the button layout is one of the best in cameras, I rarely have to go into the menues while shooting, once I have selected the correct shooting bank from the menu. Downside, single Compact flash Card slot and new CF cards are getting hard to get. Also heavy, especially if you attach the Tamron 15-30mm or the Nikkor 200-500mm. Although the latter is usually on my D300S, as that makes it a 300-750mm equivalent, very helpful in wildlife. Oh and you can't crop much, also the DX mode is down to something like 6 Mp, not really worth it. And from what I've heard the D500 has superior low light performance, one that is according to some even better than the D850 or D800.

Hello Hai it’s Tom! This is all very true. Just like you I also think that size matters hugely here. The Fujifilm cameras I own are all very small, sometimes tiny (X-A1) and it makes a world of difference because I can always carry a camera with me. So the Nikon D610 is my camera when I go out with only photography in mind (and when I'm mostly driving not hiking). Part of the reason I ended up getting the D610 is that they have gotten much cheaper these days. I paid the price of a used crop sensor camera for it; so I thought why not. Kind regards!

I have lusted after a full frame DSLR for years. Especially the D610. It always ticked all my boxes. I just now came so close to buying one (which is why I came across this video - thanks by the way). They are really really affordable now. But how and when would I ever use it? I don’t shoot weddings, or do that much landscape photography. It would probably sit on a shelf, getting dusted once in a while. I would take a few dozen boring photos per year maybe. I agree that this is a fantastic camera and a great bargain, but maybe I should stick to my MFT G90 and my Fuji X100 original. And my iphone. I do really wish I had a good use case scenario for buying a D610, or similar. Also with LR offers these days, low light performance/noise/high ISO is not really as big a deal as it used to be, nor is shallow depth of field. A great FF DSLR in the hands of a pro photographer will produce amazing results, yes. But that’s not me, or most people unfortunately. You made a lot of excellent points in this video that most people ignore or just skip over and my thanks to you for that.

Hi Mike! Thank you for your response. I agree with what you are saying. Most people will not benefit from getting a large full frame dSLR. I, too got it only because they've gotten very affordable these days. I wanted to check it out because it seemed like a very good time to do it. I got one that was only slightly used (over many years). The previous owner complained that he was only dusting it on the shelf - just as you said. He didn't have time or energy for this large camera. The image quality of modern crop sensor cameras has become so good that there is less and less reason to get a camera that is very inconvenient to carry. I love my D610 and I don't regret buying it. However it is my least used camera. I own about 10 cameras and I've been observing that the smaller my camera is the more likely I am to use it. This is not to say that the D610 doesn't produce great photos. It absolutely does but my smaller and "inferior" cameras have come incredibly close to matching the D610 in quality. Thanks for watching and best of luck to you!

@@mike_burke Hi Mike! Thanks so much. I'm glad you found my channel interesting. It's very true that we all have to focus on many things and time is limited, so we have to make choices. My D610 is my special day camera, too. It doesn't happen very often that I get to go out photographing with this camera. I'm much more likely to run into something worthwhile photographing by accident when I have one of my tiny cameras with me instead. I think your cameras are really great choices and the D610 would not add much, except size. It's good for landscapes and situations when you have lots of time. Cheers!

@@tom_photoHi again Tom! Well, I said I would not buy a D610. So I didn’t. I just bought a Canon 6D instead😮 This was really an impulse buy. My logic: It is a decently sized FF DSLR that I long dreamed about (ok, so it was not my number one choice, but probably my second choice). Professionally used, indoor only, portrait photography. Only 32,480 clicks (verified) - rated for 150,000 clicks. Not a single mark on it anywhere, it actually looks new. And wait for it…. €270 !!! I am really happy with my new baby. What do you think? All the best!

Maintaining two camera systems (Fujifilm APSC and Nikon full frame) is expensive and cumbersome. If one had to choose one system, would the best of both worlds be a compact full frame camera such as the Sony a7C? For some reason this camera doesn't seem to get a lot of love ..
@tom_photo
@tom_photo Жыл бұрын
Hi Paul! Thank you for your feedback. I'm sure Sony a7C is a great camera. My experience with Sony is unfortunately very limited. If I could choose only one system that would be Fujifilm. For me it is very special and Fuji lenses and colors are simply amazing. Fuji is lagging behind Sony when it comes to auto focus speed. Since I'm mostly a landscape photographer the speed is not an issue for me. I started out with Nikon a long time ago and that's why I considered mostly Nikon when getting a full frame camera. So these are the systems I'm primarily using and this is what my channel is mostly about (Fuji & Nikon). I'm also curious about Fuji's medium format and one day I'm getting one of those. But not yet because I already have way too many cameras. Kind regards!

@@tom_photo Hi Tom, I too come from Nikon SLRs and DSLRs. Right now I'm transitioning to mirrorless and have settled on Fujifilm. However, I sometimes still catch myself having doubts about not having gone the compact full frame camera route. It's a tricky decision with trade offs that will favour Fujifilm APSC for some and compact full frame cameras for others. I think I am not yet entirely sure where the sweet spot is for me. Maybe I should just go out and shoot more and think less :)

@@paullafleur6112 Hi Paul! I hear you. We all have these doubts every once in a while. I'm quite certain that I'm transitioning to fully mirrorless, too. It's just that I've decided to take a small detour with Nikon and use Nikon's full frame dSLR. Partly because it's a new thing for me and partly because it makes sense because I already have the lenses. Fuji is a transition I've never questioned, though. They don't make full frame and that's a pity but the X-H2S (which I don't own) is competing with full frame in image quality and is smaller and otherwise more capable. But I like your last sentence: "Shoot more and think less". This is what photography is truly about. Cheers!

i have the organizational skills of a 10 year old. And i have a full frame from every maker but panasonic. It isn't hard to do. I keep a d610 just to shoot nikon d lenses. Can't do that with a mirrorless camera. I have a k1 just shoot pentax's limited 77mm. A rp for l glass and an a7ii just to shoot prewar and commie glass. it ain't hard brother. I keep em in plastic tool boxes and pick the kit that will accomplish the task i want it to do. Sd card's are cheap, batteries are cheap, used bodies are cheap. Having a native body for my glass with an acceptable sensor size is priceless.

There are couple of things I need to adress in this video : 1. Full frame cameras do not have shallower depth of field. It's a myth. It's conditioned by focal lenght of the lens AND distance of the subject from the camera. It's a simple geometry. 2. As D610 owner who still professionally shoots with this camera I recommend everyone to avoid this specific model. It still has oil splash problem (no Nikon haven't fixed it with D610 series) and the viewfinder eye-cup keeps falling of while you transport camera in photo bag. I lost 3 of them, and after the last one, I just stopped buying them. 3. The D700 is far better choice. It's cheaper, has unprecedented colors and captures fantastic skin tones, the eye cup can't fall off and most importantly - has less megapixels (12MP) which means it's pixels are double in size (less number of pixels on same 35mm sensor). How is better to have less pixels - you ask ? Look at pixels like eyes of the camera. Bigger the eyes, the better it sees in dark, ergo lesser noise. The D700 "sees" better in dark comapred to D610 and that translates into better signal to noise ratio and greater dynamic range. It might seem like D610 has better high ISO, and at first glance it does, but if you zoom in to 1:1 ratio, you'll notice that D700 has less noise per pixel. Yes, you will end up with pictures that have lower resolution compared to D610 but the pros of D700 I mentioned above overweights the cons.

The D610 is a better camera than the D700 in any metric including low light. This is all very easy to prove via multiple sources. Astrophotography enthusiasts never recommend the D700 over the D610, why do you think that is?
@Marko-od7eb
@Marko-od7eb 7 ай бұрын
@@slooob23 Im sorry but you are just dead wrong. D700 has bigger pixels and better pixel pitch which translates in better low light performance and better signal to noise ratio and greater dynamic range. That is not my oppinion, that is scientific fact you are free to check and compare.
