What better way to test a great low-light camera than to shoot a film after dark? The Camera Store's Chris Niccolls shows off this new camera, and lets you know why it's an exciting addition to the Nikon line-up.
Huge thanks to Chris McGeachy, Stephen Lemmer, and Brent Taylor.

FYI: There is manual aperture control. You must: 1) Set manual focus on the lens (if applicable) 2) Set manual focus on the body 3) Set manual movie mode in the menu settings 4) Use keypad to select aperture (directly on LiveView) then use Wheel to change aperture.

Are you exposing manually? The Nikon will try and use fast shutter speeds instead of the 1/50th second you should be using, and then crank the ISO. Try shooting at a 1/50th second, shoot your lens at the lowest F-Stop, and then raise the ISO to get a usable image. I hope this helps, Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

@MrDigitalZombie As mentioned in the video, when in Live View or Video mode, you cannot set your aperture without flipping the mirror down and then setting your iris. So we wound up using manual aperture lenses as opposed to some nice G series lenses, like the 50mm F1.4 G and 35mm F1.8 G.

@mjollnir2230 We used the Nikkor AI 50mm F1.8, AI 85mm F1.8, and Tokina 11-16. We had other lenses we planned to use, but Aperture issues in live view kept us from using them.

I have just gone from the Nikon D90 to the D7000 and I am really happy that I did. Its early days so I am yet to get down and dirty with the D7000 but my early shots show promise. I would like the D7000 battery grip but its price point is OTT at this time.

@smithy2306 The 60D would be my first choice, all the image quality of the 60D, but with audio controls and a great flip screen. The 7D would just gain you better build quality if its use is solely stills. Definitely try using a D7000 before jumping ship to Canon though. It's a huge upgrade over the D5000/D90 in terms of image quality, and you get full manual control. Jordan @ The Camera Store

@GuNNeR85 The Camera Store is located in Canada, NOT the USA. We, in Calgary, are particularly proud and pleased that we have such a competitive and competent store and staff in our neighbourhood. Guys like Chris make the purchase of photography gear easy and painless with their approach to sales and service. It's always a pleasurable experience when I walk through the doors of The Camera Store.

@riheljana The D300s has a more rugged body with more external controls, faster framerate and faster autofocus. The D7000 has better image quality, both in terms of resolution and low light performance, much better video, and is smaller and lighter. Which is the camera for you depends on which is more important. Jordan @ The Camera Store

I read somewhere that it is not possible to do such a thing with firmware update since the D7000 uses the same motor to move the mirror as it does to change the aperture. So it cant change the aperture with out cycling the mirror. The D600 supposedly works in the same way.

You'll never get a Nikon with an F Mount to change aperture in LiveView because the aperture control is still mechanical rather than Canon's electronic. That mechanical control releases during LiveView and can not be moved until it has reset. Unfortunate, but I'd rather keep compatibility with old lenses than have to change everything.

Thank you for this great review ! I'm still thinking which is best the D7000 or the D300S ?? they seem so close, but the D300S gives this feel of a pro body much heavier and fits more in the hands, but in terms of image quality, I'm not sure which one is best. I do a lot of stills, and I'd do more and more videos now that my little daughter is growing and moving a lot. can you help me choose one of them.

I bought the D7100 to replace my D7000, and within 500 clicks I sold it. In my opinion there are several changes that went downhill. Slightly less battery life, reduced buffer rate, and the "extra" settings on the setting dial just to name a few. (M,A,S,P, is about all I need) Also, having to push an extra button to change that dial really sucks! I also didn't like the 24.2Mp resolution sensor upgrade. I shoot real estate professionally and have to reduce images for customers as it is, but even for everything else, I found it only eating up hard drive faster. If I want more resolution, I'll shoot a multi-level panoramic. Thank you. The extra crop factor setting is a joke. Nikon sells it as "being a great option for shooters who want to zoom in more". What a bunch of B.S.!! It's not a zoom. It's a crop. I wish people would quit saying it's a zoom. Anyway. I love my D300 and my D7000 and can't wait until Nikon decides it time to release the D400! Great video by the way. Thanks!
