Came here for a Sigma lens review with the D850, and stayed for the story. Pure joy to follow along with this experience and sharing the setting adjustments along with the shots was really helpful. Thanks for taking the time to share this!

What a fabulous upload. I'm so glad you took that awesome footage as well as those stills. I bet you'll never forget that encounter and it was great that you let the owlet find it's own way back. The highlight of my day; Thanks Mark from Sussex, England.

Wow, amazing photo shoot, these birds are fantastic. It's always an incredible experience seeing an adult feeding their youngs, they can be so gentle.

Thanks and I agree. I noticed how the adult would lower the horns while feeding. Made it look so much nicer. Kind of like a dog lowers its ears when it is happy and ready for a scratch on the head.

Great Horned Owls are awesome. We have a nest that is just about perfect location. She has two babies right now. I'm so happy I can access these owls because I am in a wheelchair. I'm getting ready to head for the nest. I wasn't going to go today as we get so spoiled with this nest each year. Take it for granted. But seeing your video and your excitement reminded just how special this is. I'm off to the nest. Thanks to you. Thank you. Love the video. Keep up the good work.

One of the hardest things-i imagine-about being a wildlife photographer is knowing when to intervene, if at all. Thank god it ended well. What an awesome experience indeed, Mark. Thanks for sharing. I've been blessed to follow Powerful Owls - Ninox strenua (and their two baby owls) locally. Love how yours bob their heads around, just like ours. Ours try to find trees that provide great shelter from above so they can rest without interference from above. Situation looked similar. Such great birds!

Hi Mark--I have that Sigma 500mm lens and love it. I rented the Nikon version a while back and saw very little difference in the quality of photos on my D7100 and D500 cameras. BTW, I use a wired remote control (when on a tripod) to reduce camera shake from the shutter button. Those owls are precious, you did a great job filming them!
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 6 жыл бұрын
The wired remote works too as long as you use mirror up mode. This method remove the mirror from the equation.

Wow Mark! Glad I found your station. In addition to being a great photographer, you tell a wonderful story with your pictures. I share your love of Owls, although I have a purple martin colony as a hobby and unfortunately, a GHO was attacked to all the racket and has found a new place to eat. Working on solving that with a cage next spring. A budding wildlife photographer, not great at all but enjoy the process and fun of trying to capture these moments. Thanks for your tips!

You bet! I watched this video again but now with my family. They totally loved it! We are all Owl fans, too! We have a barred owl visiting our backyard. Now he is a regular... he comes with simple owl calls and sits and watches us quietly. We are also planning to put a nest for them on the periphery of our woods. Btw, one question. how would you compare sigma 500mm vs say Canon 500mm or 600mm versions? I myself am thinking of getting a 500 or 600 f/4 version. At present I have 100-400 II.
