Nikon's F100, the scaled-down F5, included many key F5 features, such as the great viewfinder and metering system. The F100 is a relatively uncommon camera, having arrived at the dawn of digital when many film users started to switch over to DSLRs from their traditional film cameras. So despite being relatively young cameras, they're somewhat uncommon on the open market compared to many other camera models. The F100 is a full-features camera that can do essentially and photographic task easily and without much hassle. This video series examines the camera's interface, operation, and custom function menus to guide users through how to use the camera well and effectively.

A personal note for other viewers that start using the F100: I do mainly B&W, and I tend to use the "easy" exposure compensation (CSM 13) in A-mode, in combination with spot metering, back button focus and AE lock, in order to quickly place a tone in the zone that I intend (e.g. a deep shadow or the head of our black cat in Zone III, so -2 stops, or e.g. a light complexion in Zone VI, so +1 compensation, etc.). It works quite fast using AF Servo and setting the AF mode to: [ ]. For this, I also use the following Custom Settings: CSM 4 -> 1, CSM 13 -> 1 and CSM 21 -> 3. With this combination of settings the autofocus and spot meter are only taken from the middle AF sensor in the viewfinder, the AF-ON behaves as back button focus (BBF) and the AE-L/AF-L is for Auto Exposure only and keeps the exposure locked until pressed again (so it frees up your finger). So I first consider the desirable aperture for the photograph, then I point the middle AF sensor at the subject, do BBF and lock the exposure, then with the lower command dial I adjust exposure to place that tone in the intended zone, then check if the shutter speed is not too slow for hand held, and if so, I recompose and take the photograph. Of course there are situations, mostly due to low light, where we have to make concessions. I understand this might be cumbersome for some people, but because my photography is not the fastest, this system actually is actually much faster than using a manual focus camera and doing spot metering using a handheld device.

Thank you and those are nice. The cassettes in these videos are way-expired stock that would not perform well at all. I got them for free and most are 30-40 years old. I recycle the metal cassettes when I'm done with them (they usually last a couple dozen cameras or so until something like this happens.)

David, on rewatching this video I realised that there's one thing you didn't mention about the different flash modes and the flash sync, hi-speed sync above 1/250 all the way up to 1/8000 with the certain speedlights is a option just like modern Nikon DSLR'S.

I know and that's because I am really unfamiliar with HSS flash on Nikon. To be fair, I have HSS with my Pentax flashes and only use it rarely on my Pentax cameras, so it's something that I don't use enough of in my own work to feel like I can speak competently to in these videos. Adding to that that not all (Nikon) flashes will support HSS (and I don't know which ones do reliably) it's not a subject that I cover in any video.

Did you ever get Steinbeck off your lap? 🤣 Excellent videos as always David. Thank you for making them. Even if I don't have the model of camera involved, it's fun to watch them and enjoy operating the cameras vicariously. I am working on an online symposium/presentation on film photography. Would you be OK with me referencing your guides i.e. linking them to your videos to get extra help in using film cameras?

A couple of points. First you can manually rewind the film. I prefer this because I can (sometimes) work it to leave a bit of leader out. It also saves on batteries but that's nothing to worry about. Secondly, if someone were going to purchase this camera AND lenses, I strongly recommend Nikon D lenses. As you demonstrated, G lenses are crippled when it comes to setting aperture in some modes. The F100 will not work at all with E lenses as far as I know.

Hi David, thanks for the awesome video. Quick question, do you have any experience will film loading errors with this camera? Every time I try to add a roll it acts like its trying to pull the film but nothing happens and I get an "err" message. Checked the manual and said when that err pops up its due to "film not correctly advanced" and the solution was to reload. Checked some online forms and some people were saying its an advance error which needs to be brought in for repair. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks again
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you and I have bad news for you. The advance motor is shot. Either the motor itself or a gear in the system. It's going to need a disassembly and repair and these are not easy cameras to fix. There's a place in Oxnard, California, the Camera and Camcorder Repair Center, I think, that I would trust with that repair.

It might be, that you've got a early production run F100, check carefully the film fork, if its with trapezoid tips, it's the old model, which can break after some time, due to mechanical stress to that specific part (film rewind). If it's square tips, then you've got the updated fork into your F100. That shouldn't break. Otherwise, it's like David wrote, it could be that one of the brushless motors into the F100 (afaik 4) turned south, but i've never heard about this...i think it might be the case, that your film rewind fork is broken. I was always wondering into 1999, why Nikon didn't made that small & cheap part out of metal, which should last forever, longer than the F100 itself. Well, it's a year ago...i don't know, if you still own that F100...

David, the MS-12 (AA) and MS-13 (CR123) battery holders fit in the camera body using the battery door you said you didn’t have in video 1 to keep them in. While the MS-12 holders aren’t too expensive, I just spent $60 + Shipping for an MS-13. As to manually rewinding film you can choose when to rewind but it’s still motorized. There is no rewind lever. Also, Nikon G and D series work just fine on the F100 and big brother F5. And let me echo another poster; please get a film extractor. They aren’t expensive and unless you have a ton of 35mm film to waste in demonstration it will save you angst. Finally give Steinbeck a scratch behind the ears for me!

Thank you! The film in these videos, it's all WAY expired stock, like 80s and 90s, that I picked up for free. And 200 Gold, which I have a boatload of, is basically useless now with poor colors and tons of grain. When I finish up with a roll I recycle the metal cassettes, too.

I just picked up a beautiful F100 and was watching your video for operation instruction. Oddly your F100 when loading film automatically advances to the first shot after closing the door. I followed your instructions and when loading my F100 with film and closing the door it did nothing I even tried a different roll of film and nothing. I then searched other videos and there was one that indicated that after loading the film and shutting the door you have to press the shutter button in order for it to advance to the first shot. I honestly thought my new prized F100 was broken until I watched the other video. Okay, I just realized that it's a custom function to enable the film to auto load.

The F100 is a very nice camera to use. Very handy and capable of great shots. BUT - the plastic rear door and lock and the plastic film spool spindle is a real weakness of the body. I bought mine a few years ago 2010 and it broke once, easy to replace then not sure now. Basically the money I saved over a F5 was not worth the plastic parts on the F100.
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 10 ай бұрын
I would definitely recommend the F5 now. That said, the F5 is far from problem free and things like leaked batteries and general abuse have shown some weaknesses in the F5's buttons, dials, and electronics.
