In this Episode 5 we look at Nikon F5, widely regarded as the last professional Nikon SLR Film camera produced by Nikon. It was the last Emperor at the Peak of power, holding onto a vast empire. Under steady and confident hands, Industrial Design and Beauty were skillfully combined with Mechanical perfection and advances in electronics.
This is a re-upload of a video with the same name. KZfaq did not like the use of the music from Chariots of Fire. I was asked to change all the music. This time the actual copyright permission has been copied below. Also one of you pointed out that the design of F5 started in 1992. That correction has been included in this version.
In 1985, 3 years before Nikon F4, Minolta introduced serous autofocus in the Maxxum 7000 and the professional grade Maxxum 9000. The user interface also had many new ideas. A little later the same year, Canon introduced its T80 SLR with limited autofocus with the old FD lens mount. It only lasted one year.
In 1986, 2 Years before Nikon F4, Canon introduced T90. T90 substantially improved some of the new user interface ideas from the Minolta Maxxum 7000 and 9000 and created a virtual revolution which lasted for decades and were copied by many others.
But it was too little, to late for T90. Minolta had changed the game with serious professional grade Autofocus and T90 did not have autofocus. So, after just one year Canon introduced its new EOS cameras, named after the Greek Goddess of Dawn EEos, suggesting a whole new beginning.
Nikon’s own response to Minolta Maxxum Autofocus cameras started with F501 in 1986 and F401 in 1987, followed by F4 in 1988.
Canon EOS 1 was the first professional version from 1989 to 1994, which seriously challenged Nikon F4. In 1994, it was updated to EOS 1N which continued to the year 2000.
Nikon F5 was the response to that environment. Nikon started the design of Nikon F5 as early as 1992 (the video incorrectly mentions 2002- sorry about that). It was a do or die period. Nikon had to do something truly spectacular. They had to match and surpass Canon in every area to regain the title of the top professional brand, especially for Press photographers.
With F5, Nikon looked far into the future. It was not entirely a joke when they used the motto “Imported from the Future”. The Future historians may even think Nikon first designed the D1 Professional Digital camera, then inserted a film chamber inside to form the perfect film camera. But in fact it is the other way around. D1 is substantially F5 with digital interiors.
The F5 design peaked like a star athlete after years of training and just before the Olympic games. It broke all records with quality, features and competent execution whilst disarming the opposition by embracing, absorbing, and extending every good idea regardless of its origin. Nikon F5 was and still is the Peak, and the un-rivalled Apex of SLR film camera design.
TechHeritage Mission Statement
We have over 300 cameras from 1901 to 2015 at the TechHeritage Museum. We will produce videos like this one at the rate of at least one per 2 weeks until all cameras are preserved not only in the flesh but also online.
TechHeritage is dedicated to the preservation of the Human Consumer Technology in the same manner as experts have been carefully preserving the heritage of ancient civilizations in museums. There appears to be some negligence in the preservation of the consumer technology of the last 100 years.

Very impressive video !! I haven't watched your Nikon ones before this one, but I will. I had a Nikon F Photomic (non-TTL) in 1964. And I have a F5 with the fancier data back ... that I got off a NY seller on eBay in 2008 or so. Anyway, you crammed a lot of information into that 37 minute video !

I’d really enjoy a video about the Nikon F100… as a proud custodian of an F,F4,F5 and an F100 I can’t pick a favourite but I usually reach for the F100… until I can afford an F6 😂

I hope you have also watched our videos on F and F4. Sadly, at this time we don't own a Nikon F100. We have many other Nikons which are on the list for review, such as FE, EM F-410 and F510, S3. As soon as we manage to get the F100, it will be on the list for review. Similarly as soon as we can afford to get the F6, the F series of videos will be completed.

Another well presented, comprehensive and detailed review. Thanks for posting. I wonder - have you considered doing a review of the Minolta Dynax 9 film camera? Never as popular as its Nikon and Canon rivals, but equally featured and with similar build quality. It even had 12 fps burst rate!! Just a thought.
@TechHeritage
@TechHeritage 3 ай бұрын
Dynax 1 is a great, neglected camera. The last failed attempt at capturing a part of the professional market. But the legacy of Dynax 9 lives in Sony, almost to this day. Sony Alpha is basically the Dynax heritage re-packaged as digital to take over the world. My greater interest, however, is in Maxxum 9000 (or Alpha 9000), which was much more successful and far ahead of its time. It was copied by all other camera manufacturers. It will be featured in a video soon, I hope.

I enjoyed your Nikon F to F5 videos. It would be good to finish the 'set' with the F6, even if it isn't maybe as professional as the others....it's still a single digit F-series camera though and the last of the line.

There is just a little detour through the enemy territory. I thought I should honestly cover some of the competition such as Canon F-1, which was uploaded yesterday. Your opinion on that will be valuable. Next we I'm going to cover some of the minor F's such as FM2n. Nikon F6 is still coming, as soon as I manage to buy one.

One of the most beautiful body : smooth elegant and solid. A myth rather affordable by these days. The only issue Nikon got is that the body for « confirmed amators » the F100 was also very efficient and half the price of this one…

If you love Nikon (what I guess…) we have a very complete museum around Lyon( center east of France). I you have the opportunity to go to France consider it as a good destination ( it s in the middle between Paris and the Mediterranean Sea… so a good pause :))

Thanks for the tip. I have been to Lyon several times, but I did not know about the Museum. It will be on my list for next time. We have 15 Nikon cameras out of 350 in total, covering different brands of film camera from 1915 to 2015.

Thanks. These were covered in the other videos on the Nikon F Series. But please note that Yusaku Kamekura was not an Industrial designer in the same way as Giugiaro. He was a Graphic Designer and better known for working on the Posters and logo for the 1964 summer Olympics. He did relatively small work including the Nikon Logo and the original pyramidal, non-metered Nikon F Finder. The camera itself was designed by the Nikon Engineers partially based on the Nikon S Chassis.

@TechHeritage
@TechHeritage 5 ай бұрын
F6 is not bad at all. I is fantastic. But it is not as big a jump as F4 to F5. Also it came a little too late. By that time Digital was clearly the way the world was going, including Nikon. It is said that Nikon was initially reluctant to release F6. But I am glad they did.

It's normally an collector item nowadays, considering photojournalism already switched to digital yet Nikon created another 35mm body. But if you can find one on good working condition on a very reasonable price, then why not? :D

Nickathos7428- Thank you for watching this video and taking the trouble to comment. With a view to features and advances in electronics, of course you would be 100% correct. But one could also argue that the latest Digital camera is even better. But our focus here is "Heritage". i.e. which cameras have a unique and enduring impact on the history of photography. You will see this focus in all of our videos, even the humble Canon AE-1 or Pentax K1000. More than 400 cameras here are in a museum environement and preserved as such.
