Nikon Lied about their FTZ adaptor !!
It DOES NOT Make "F" mount glass just as fast on the "Z" mount camera as Nikon claims !!!
In this video, I will discuss Lens adaptors and Why
I think you shouldn't use them, I have tested over 30 "F" mount lenses
and they all suck compared to the Native "Z" mount glass
If you don't believe me, then go check out Matt Grangers FTZ review:
• Nikon Z7 - Lens Compat...
Bottom line is Contrast Detection wasn't out for Nikon when most of the older "F" mount
Lenses were produced and the Nikon "Z" uses both "Phase" and "Contrast" detection for autofocus

Hudson Henery has great reviews on Nikon Z

Can`t agree with your conclusions. The majority of the Nikon users HAVE a bunch of lenses they can continue to use with the adapter until the want or can replace them with Z-mount lenses. I tested the full Sigma Art Lineup and the work just fine. If have tested all more modern Nikon lenses and they work just great. I use both worlds, the Nikon D500 and D850 plus the Z7 and those three are just doing an excellent job together...

Hmm, yes, they are doable, but from the perspective of a newcomer Z system is not appealing at all, this was a major point of Rick. In this perspective, Nikon is just fighting to somehow keep the Nikon loyal community as much as possible. They should have made the gigantic FTZ adapter with screw driver motor to keep support the excellent AF-D lens line. When Sony released full-frame E mount, they made not less than four adapters, two of them had the screw driver motor to support all Minolta A-mount lenses ever made. Now, with this FTZ adapter, Nikon silently announced: guys sell your all AF-D lenses until not too late.

Why use legacy lenses? Well that’s a dumb question, Rick: because we like those lenses, because we don’t have the money to buy new ones, and because they don’t exist for the new mount in the first place! And legacy Nikkor just work amazingly well with the FTZ adapter, like all reviewers have acknowledged.

Rick , Sony also had an adapter for their A mount glass to work on FE amount . Also Nikon F lenses work very well with the FTZ adapters . I think you’re being a little too exaggerated in your assessment . Yes the adapted lenses may be a tad noisier . However , they work more that just fine . Lastly if you’re going to show focus breathing of the adapted lenses maybe you should demonstrate what they look like before being adapted .

You can not compare the sound made by an F-mound AF-S lens to the sound made by any Z-mount lens. The new Z-mount use an auto-focus similar to the newer AF-P system which is both quieter and faster focusing. I believe Nikon only made 4 different F-mount AF-P lenses so if your lens was noisy when auto focusing it will still be noise on a Z-mount camera. Otherwise thanks for a great video.

Hi Rick, agree with you about the noise from the F-mount 24-70, it was fine for stills but for video a real issue. With my 70-200 not an issue because I use it for stills and mainly static subjects. It really shows ho Nikon has thought about the lenses in parallel with the hybrid nature of the Z series. Ultimately all the Nikon F-mount f2.8 lenses and the Z-mount f4/2.8 lenses have great IQ. Cheers

I agree in that if you already own high-end Nikon systems like the D850 With high end glass, there's no real value in switching to the Z-system and adapting the glass. That being said, I am not so sure the difference between Z and F Mount glass in terms of Focus speed (comparing native Z on a Z6/7 to adapted F on Z6/7) is that noticable. Noise is an obvious difference, although the native Z glass is not 100% silent either. I own the 24-70 F4 native Z lens and an F Mount Tamron 70-200 F2.8 G2. In terms of Focus speed the difference not Clear, and in some cases the tamron lens was faster. It does have more noise, but not to the point where it bothers me. Does not matter to me when taking Pictures. Now just to be Clear, this is my point of view as a hobbyist. And i will continue adapting lenses, that i know work well on the Z system, even if they are not 100% on par With the native lenses. Simply because there is a lot of Money to save. And since i am no Professional, i like to save where i can. Based on the price of the 24-70 2.8S I guestimate that i have saved at least 50%, probably a little more on buying the Tamron 2.8 70-200 G2 compared to the Nikon 70-200 2.8S when it is released some time in the future. And for my use, it is more than capable and gives great results.

Excellent video ... while I understand Nikon's decision (backward compatibility), I just hate adapters and dongles of any kind for all tech devices ... they are just another piece of kit that you have to carry around while providing no additional value whatsoever. Nikon is in a tough spot right now ... the general camera market is declining rapidly due to the ubiquity of smart phones and they needed to innovate in order to remain competitive ... thus the new mirrorless cameras and their associated lenses. Their main problem is that most of their existing customers already have a lot of old glass, making them switch to a new format is a tall order in my opinion. Pro shooters will probably make the transition to this new format as they can justify the cost but JoeSixPack will probably just keep using his old F mount camera gear. As an amateur shooter myself, my good old F mount camera does the job nicely with my lens collection, I just don't see any reason (cost vs benefit) in going to a Z mount camera at this time.
@kash.h

Ftz adapter allows them to retain customers like me who own nikon glass. Without adapter, if I had to buy everything in one go, I might have changed the brand. But instead of that I bough one Mirrorless body, one z lens (24-70) and use adapter for other lenses if I need to. I work with two bodies so my f lenses still get plenty of use on my D750. To buy my 1.4mm primes again, I'd have to rob someone 😂 So why did I move to z? It is lighter. At events I am able to shoot 70-80% images with the Z body and 24-70 f 2.8. Heavier DSLR and primes are fillers. This is so much easier on my hands and arms. Even though it seems counterintuitive, this odd combination is working pretty well for me! Lastly about the noise, I don't shoot video so I don't care about it.

Interesting video. With Canon, the EF lenses respond as good as, and in some cases faster than they do on the DSLRs. Canon also has the same sized lens mount on the EOS R-series cameras as it had on the DSLRs (EF and EF-s mount). They changed the mount and number of electrical contacts, but the physical diameter remains unchanged. The big advantage of the newer native lenses is the new optical designs with better edge-to-edge sharpness.

Canon has a poor autofocus. I have a Canon M50 and the autofocus is very inaccurate when you focus on small details (despite using the 10x loupe), I tried multiple M50 cameras, not comparable with a modern DSLR. Furthermore the autofocus nearly doesn't work at all with the 15-45mm in not good light conditions. The autofocus is definitely the worst thing about the Canon M50. In a store I tried an Eos RP and an M6 II and they seem to have similar accuracy issues. Surprisingly the M6 I is more accurate.

Well, first of all, its a mirrorless camera. Meaning, if it does not have access to the polarity profile of the lens for whatever reason it will use contrast based focusing. In order to get to maximum per pixel contrast it needs to pass it in order to be able to measure it. Then the focusing motor reverses to the last known maximum contrast position. During that reverse it has to fight a lot of momentum. The focusing mechanisms of older lenses are not built to do that, they are heavy. And they are also noisy ... like 90% of al lenses regardless of the body or time they where released. That being said, lens profiles and compatibility is still being worked on. So .. now its 2021, maybe in 2023 we'll get the improvements for discontinued glass. Or ... it did already, I bought mine with the 1.1 update already on the adaptor (let me know if there where some measurable changes from 1.0 to 1.1 of the F lenses). I started to use manual focus again (lets face it, mirrorless probably has another decade to go to get to the speed of DSLR) which is way more fun than just "waiting" and/or "throwing away perfectly useable glass". No need to make the video so edgy. Unless you are farming views and comments. In that case .. GJ. Also, that "for mirrorless" add buzz of the lenses is essentially the speed and weight of the focusing mechanism.

I hate having to use the FTZ adapter but no choice. I feel like Nikon is semi holding Z owners hostage. We cant get a Z mount lens from Sigma or Tamron and we have to wait forever for a core lens lineup. The 24-70 F4 is great. The 2.8 is even better but aside from the 50/35 1.8 releases the only other lens that matters is that 70-200 2.8 and the 85 1.8. Personally, I could care less about the Noct lens. Most of us would be more impressed if they got a 105 1.4 z mount out or more 1.4 lens out in general. Canon is already putting out 1.2s! If Nikon wants to boast about the capabilities of the new mount then prove it. But don’t ask Z owners to buy the same lenses twice.

no these are NOT my followers These are people that don't even have the camera or the 30 lenses I borrowed to make this Honest review..... I have proof about this and that's why I shared it. but I'm not the only one sharing about this Better men than me have proved the same thing. See Here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jrN5dLleyt7Qj6M.html The video is about how slow and loud older lenses are and it only makes sense that a 10-year-old lens using old stepper motors to focus would do poorly aginst a brand new lens with New technology. It's nice to have subscribers but I will not be fake or change who I am to gian subscribers like every other KZfaqr I'm not looking for fame or money I do this for fun for ME Regards, rick

All F mount lenses are subject to noise due to the MECHANICAL AF ring. The FTZ only connects the Z-body to an F lens. The FTZ cannot cut out noise from F lenses. Before, a Nikon camera just took STILL IMAGES, Nikon didn't care about the noise and nobody noticed it. As many competitors added VIDEO to the camera, Nikon had to follow. Then people noticed how loud the F lens was when they took the video. With the Z mount, Nikon has eliminated the MECHANICAL AF ring. Less moving parts, less noise. The more expensive Z lenses, Nikon already offers the DIGITAL AF display. The cheaper Z lenses, don't have any more AF rings.

Typical Gen Z'r If you can't afford new lenses then by all means don't buy them but it's a proven fact that older lenses are much slower and clunkier than the new ones.... First of all Sony produced the first alpha in October 2013 at first they had only a few lenses and lots of bugs, they are now a very solid camera brand.... I prefer to have just a few Nikon z lenses that works instead a bunch with many bugs... I do have a Z6 and use my D and old manual lenses I'll m combination and never a problem.... You have to take in consideration that a brand need to evolve and that take time is not a over night process, so far even with the OMG noise that the G lenses produce I have not find a problem when I print a picture that is what's matter.. IMO Nikon has done a good job even giving for free the ftz

I don't get what you meean by Nikon lied about the FTZ adapter? I do hope they come out with a version 3 of the FTZ that has a built in motor for those who wants to adapt old F glass. Yes, F-mount lenses are noisier. No news there. They are equally noisy on a DSLR. Keep in mind that a lot of F glass was made before or just when video became a thing and Nikon DSLR are not known for being good video cameras (they use only contrast detection). Hence, noisy lenses are not an issue shooting pictures. Even now 4 yrs later after you made this video the Z glass is super expensive compared to older F glass. Many say the Z glass is better but I'd still say the F glass is just as good as it's always been so I really don't see a problem getting used F glass and use that on the Z mount. I am not made of money, that is for damn sure.

Agreed. If you are happy with taking pictures with your DSLR - stick with the DSLR - and skip the Mirrorless. If you take pictures... stick with the DSLR! If I was going out to take pictures, I would still take out my D7100. But I got the Z6 for video and I am realizing that - for video - I am sticking with (or stuck with) the new Z lenses. Since I expect to do a lot of work in Post using artificial light (that I have complete control over) the slower lenses are fine... of good enough.

All my F-mount lenses work flawlessly with the FTZ adapter. Even my 70-200 with 2X teleconverter functions as well as with my D-800. Of course the F-mount lenses are not as quiet as the Z-mount due to different motors that are less-advanced than the Z-mount. That's nothing to do with the FTZ. Your title is misleading and inaccurate.

Maybe you have lost the point, the adapter is thought for those who already have many Nikon 'old' lenses, and that is all good. Nobody buys a new f lens for the z mouth camera.
@rickvestuto
@rickvestuto 5 жыл бұрын
And that was the point If I had a bunch of OLD "F" mount glass I wouldn't switch to the Nikon "Z" because the adapted glass is so much slower and louder on the adapter you're better off staying with "F" mount cameras and just upgrade you camera to a D5 or D850 Thanks for your comments regards, Rick

@@VioletHenning I had said the words D7500 and meant to say D750 The D750 is a great camera and you probably have some awesome glass for it At this time since you have the D750 I feel that there is no reason to buy a "Z" camera Your D750 will be awesome for at least another 2 years and by that time Nikon will or will not have their ducks in a row and then I would tell you to jump over to the "Z" just like it took Sony 3 or 4 years to get it right now it will take Nikon and Canon the same but for a First Gen camera I feel Nikon is pretty close on it's first attempt Thanks for commenting and your support Best regards, Rick
