I compare three different Nikon Macro lenses and one vantage lens and then throw on an extension ring to boot! which one will come out on top? The 200mm Micro Nikkor, the 105mm Micro Nikkor, or the 60mm Micro Nikkor? Or could it be the odd ball that is added for fun? Watch the video to find out!!! This is not a real scientific examination, but rather a real world comparison that you would be more expected to find if you wanted to use these lenses on something other than test charts.
I shoot my video on 3 different cameras currently.
iPhone X
Sony A7ii with the 24-70mm Sony/Zeiss lens.
iPhone 6+

Hello David, I hope you don’t mind me adding some of my experiences with some of these lenses, and an other nikkor macro. First, all my nikkor-macro’s work great with polarising filters. My zeiss 100/2 becomes a bite straneg with a pol. for comparison. The 200 macro; Very expensive indeed , but also very great. Great subject isolation. Nice balance between body and lens. I use it with a D3x. Lens hood is very advisable, loses contrast very fast when facing the sun. But you are left with enough focus distance, so no problem here. I find it surprisingly easy to shoot it manual focus and handheld. Many say you NEED a tripod with this lens. No, some of us need a tripod with this lens. I don’t use tube’s with this lens because of it’s already large size. This lens is my weapon of choice. The 60 af-d; As you said very nice lens, can really make your subject pop out off the image. I prefer this af-d over the newer af-G by far. The af-G is at most a close-up lens and not a macro. Because of it’s exposed front element (G version), it catches the sun very quickly and contrast is gone. So you need the lenshood, which overlaps with your closes distance. I think a 50/1.8 with a tube is a better choice. And cheaper. Adding the nikkor micro 105mm 2.8 AF-D (not the VR) to the list; I think this is a great lens, very sharp when closed down a little, great contrast and colors. When I need to go beyond 1:1 , I use this lens with tube’s. I have the impression that sharpness increases when magnification increases. Well, that's it. I hope i can help someone with my info. thanks and kind regards. willem

Thank you for taking the time to watch my video AND share your experience with all these wonderful lenses too. I always find it amazing how people are so willing to share what they have learned freely when all you hear is the naysayers complaining about stuff. Thank you again!!! 📸

The cats were all being lazy and were sleeping here and there... thank you for noticing the magnet with the Ten Comandments. I didnt make that deliberately in the video, just shifted the camera for the table top. But I am not ashamed of them. 😉 As for the tokina, now you have me looking for a used one. Hahahah!!!!! Thanks!!!!

Oh and how are you mounting that old 105 with your modification to the camera? Normally the ais lenses have a fairly large piece of flange removed so they can mount without touching the feeler until it is mounted. Maybe you can do a video showing that modification process, I have a few old lenses I wouldn't mind performing it on.

Video describing how I did it is up now. If it doesn’t do well on describing it, please let me know. I thought about getting another one of these lenses and doing a neater job, then giving that one away in another video.

Thank you, sir! Great video. I'm in the hunt for a macro lens for mostly wedding details. I have a D500 that I hope to upgrade to a D850 in the next year, but for now I'm using a crop sensor. I have some good prime lenses for my camera, including an 85mm 1.8 Tamron for portraits (although it's on the long side for the crop sensor). Would a 90mm macro (also Tamron) be a poor choice due to how close it is to the 85 in focal length? Would it be better to try to get something longer (I have the kit lens with VR, the 70-300 but nothing else longer than the 85.) Would love your thoughts. Thank you for your time and have a good day.
@davidsaylors
@davidsaylors 5 жыл бұрын
It really depends on how close you want to get to your subjects. The shorter focal length macros are great for those detail shots since they dont quite go 1:1. If you really want to get close though, the longer ones like the 105mm and the 200mm will put some room between the lens and your subject, making room for your light. I would get either the 40mm micro nikkor or the older 55mm Ais Micro Nikkor. The 40mm will autofocus but that is hard to do at those distances anyway, which is why I would personally get the 55mm... AND on your D500 it turns into an effective 82mm (think portraiture). 😉 Dont bother with the 200mm though as it is super costly (I have one) and it is heavy...very heavy. It doesnt bring that much more to the table for what you do either...

Good video! Is a vintage camera lens restorable if it gets the white haze fungus inside?
@davidsaylors
@davidsaylors 5 жыл бұрын
It really depends on whether or not the fungus has etched the glass or not. Once it etches into the glass, it pretty much has to be professionally done to make it right. There are little hacks out there that people try like toothpaste and jewelers rouge, but you are gambling at that point. Otherwise, the elements can be cleaned with alcohol (the kind without any scents in it). If you dismantle the lens, it is a good idea to video the disassembly so you can reference it when putting it back together. Good luck! Thanks for watching!!!

Hello, David. Greetings from Cuba. I’ve a question for you. I have the 70-210 mm macro Nikkor but my camera is a cheap D3200. Now, I ve been shutting with my old Nikkor lenses without metering but I would like to have at least some aperture index. My question is: is there any adapter to give some index to the camera that will work on a Nikon D3200? Thanks so much for the videos, it is been really helpful

To be honest I have no idea if there is a lens in your arsenal that will do that. Most likely you will need a FS lenses for that to work. Pretty much any G series lens will work great on your camera. That is what I would recommend for you to find. Hope this helps.👍📸

David Saylors thanks David, I do have a 35 mm f1.8 DX and a 50mm f1.4. But Im in love with AIS lenses and I was wondering how to communicate f stop to the body. I think I need to find a better body. Thanks so much.

Got myself a 100 Tokina macro on fleabay. Supposed to be as new unused. Will be interesting to see if it’s as decent as most people say. The first third party lens I’ve got. I much prefer to stick with Nikon. I doubt the Tokina will have a long life but I guess for 1/2 price it’s worth a try. People want a bit too much for the Nikon so the Tokina is worth trying. A nice Nikon 60mm macro on fleabay for $430. Nice but too much I think.

Are you looking at just the AFS lenses? I found a boatload of AF (screwdrive focus) 60mm lenses for 200$ and a bunch of 105mm Ai manual focus Nikkor lenses for around 100$. Anyway, from everything I have seen, that is Tokina’s crowning achievement so it should work well for you.

Made the mistake of updating my KZfaq app, now comment replies don’t show up on the channel. I was looking at the 60mm D macro screw drive I think it’s 2.8. $430 minty on fleabay. And the Nikon g macros. I’m happy to try the Tokina, unless I try it I won’t know. To be honest I was surprised I won the auction. Most times on fleabay you get way outbid but Sometimes you get a surprise.

Yeah, I did the sniper thing one time and got a smoking' deal in a lens, but then I have not had time since to mess with it much so I loose most of the time... Also, most of the time, I see these old lenses selling for WAY more than I am willing to pay for them... I dont know if it is auction fever or what, but sometimes you can buy new for less money. What gives? Anyway, I see what you are finding now, those like new variants are nice, if you are willing to buy from Japan, you can normally get even better condition for even less money. I have bought several from japanese dealers and typically they are 15% or so cheaper than the same american lens offering but in nicer condition. I bet you will love the Tokina though, with how Ken brags on it, it has to be good.

David Saylors I heard somewhere that the really high price sellers on EBay that list things far higher than retail are doing this as a money laundering exercise. Not sure if that’s true or they’re just hoping for someone to mistakingly select buy. Yes Japan has lots of great gear especially if you were their to look at the camera shops but personally I prefer to buy locally and only minty items so usually pay a bit more but that’s ok. I will try out the Tokina and let you know my thoughts.
