Hi Matt, It is a year plus since you posted this review of the Nikkor 24-70 F4 S lens for the Z mount cameras. I did get 2 of these lenses with both kits, my new Z6II and Z7II. Not sure I will need them both, but I have them now for the time being. Your review was very helpful to me on many levels. I am glad to see how sharp it is in your opinion. I agree with you. The little bit I have shot the lens with both cameras, the results and photos where 1st class, A1 sharp. I didn't use them in a stadium, but rather in close range in my home and in my son's home taking pictures of my baby granddaughter. I do agree with you that the size of the lens is really nice, and light as well. Comparing the lens to my old F mount 24 - 70 F 2.8, and the 24 - 70 F2.8 with the VR, they are night and day. Handling those lenses with the FTZ adapter, is really very awkward, but they do work. I think the F 2.8 with the VR, is heavier than either camera. I cannot see myself carrying either of those large lenses when I want a 2.8, 24 - 70 with me on a shoot or while traveling. So far, I have resisted purchasing that Z mount lens. That "proposed", 24 - 105mm will be very nice, when it is available. I watched your review a few weeks ago of the Z mount 70 - 200, F 2.8 with the 2X extender, which was very, very interesting. It's on my lens list for the Z mount cameras. Thank you again for all you very well done professional reviews. Your information is very much appreciated and respected. Good job! 👍 📸 🗺 🏟 👏

All I have is S lenses. I used my 28-300 as my go to lens. I need a good travel lens so I was looking at the 24-70mm because it is so compact. Your video really was helping me decide, along with a friend who has the 24-70mm f4 Z lens, until you mentioned the 24-105mm. I can wait a few months. I will be talking with a Nikon Representative this Saturday. I will see what he knows. Nikon has been running sales on lenses but not the one I want.

Yes it is the "kit" lens that came with my Z6. It is a heck of a lens. I have other Z lenses including the Z 20mm 1.8 /S, the Z 50mm, Z 85mm and the Z 70-200 2.8, yet this is my every day lens. It is compact, not heavy, it is crisp, very sharp and the price was right. My preferred lens for shooting outdoors in daylight.

I picked one up used because I needed a versatile zoom lens for occasional wide shots at 24mm and if my 70-200/2.8 isn't quite wide enough. This thing is great. You can get it pretty cheap on the used market and for a "kit lens" the quality is pretty astounding. I've seen other reviews and some even chose to keep the f/4 over the f/2.8 because it gives them pretty much the same image quality while being way smaller and lighter. Many photographers prefer getting f/4 lenses over the f/2.8s specifically because they want to save space and weight. And with the collapsable design they really doubled down on that. To be honest, I'm not a fan of that but I get why they did it. The mechanism doesn't feel cheap either and they didn't make a compromise when it comes to image quality. I paid 350€ for it, for the image quality I get from this lens I'm willing to make some ergonomical sacrifices.

I shot a wedding the other day, I was switching between my D810 and a Tamron 24-70 g2 and a Z6 with the 24-70 f4 and got to say, the Z6 images look better to me. Even when the iso was bumped up on the z6 to make up for only being f4, they still look better than the D810 at 2.8. The Z6 with that lens is such a good combo, I’m beginning to wonder if I need a f2.8. I’ve got 3 of the 1.8s lenses so covered for low light and not sure spending £2k on the f2.8s is worth it!

Matt Irwin Photography I’m after the 14-30 next, I’ve got the 35, 50 and 85mm which are all incredible but need something wider. The 70-200s would be great but for the amount I use it, I’ll stick with the Tamron G2 version I’ve got, it’s actually very good on the FTZ anyway. Another reason for liking the f4 is that I only really use 2.8 for ceremony shots in badly lit church’s and to be honest, I’m not a big fan of the way 2.8 looks. At 2.8 shooting 2 people they have to be pretty level to get them both in focus and during the ceremony that rarely happens. You get one in focus and the other is just a bit out, so it looks like a you missed. I’d rather use either f4 and get both in or use one of the 1.8s and get a proper shallow depth of field.

The 24-70 is anything but ordinary in portraits. Sue it does not have buttery out of focus rendering but most portraits in controlled conditions are stopped down also so it is better than the much more expensive 24-70 G or 2.8 in terms of sharpness across the frame, absence of CA/fringing and excellent color. I have the 2.8 S version also, surely the best mid zoom on the planet but it is heavier and larger and only differs when opened up fully. 2,8 is 2.5 stops shallower DOF than the F/4 version but that can be simulated by changing the ratio if camera to subject being closer than subject to background. My everyday walking around sling bag has only two lenses normally, the 24-70 f/4 and 85 1.8 S which IS a stellar portrait lens. My commercial work more and more is done with a very limited kit of 35, 85 and 24-70 f/4 or 2,8. The only thing missing having all the 1.8 prime S lenses, is the newly delayed 70-200 2.8 S but its size and weight seem like a step back with convenience. and here where I live close to $3000. For "only" $5000 more I could get the rendering king 58 0.95. I seldom use my F lenses of D850 or D800 now.

I call it a bundled lens, it is nothing like any kit lens before. Corner to corner is it sharper than either my G or E f mount 24-70 2.8 which cost and weigh far more. It is my most used lens, despite having a good collection of F mount and EXCELLENT prime Z-mount. The only lens that is better in that FL is the 24-70 S 2,8. I am sure if there is a flawless zoom this 2.8 is it. But is larger, heavier and a lot more expensive. IF someone really needs a pro-level mid zoom(we all do) the 2.8 needs to be looked at. he small light F/4 version is the perfect travel and walking around the lens and unobtrusive for candid street shooting. Getting the f/4 with the body is a no brainer, even if one has a 2.8 already because the f/4 is better optically and small and light enough just to keep on the camera when out and about. All the Z mount lenses released so far are sharper and have less color fringing than their F mount cousins of the same speed and FL. The weakest one I have is the 35 1.8 S.....and it is still better at 35 than any Nikkor lens before it. The 50 1.8 is the best Norm lens I have ever used and I have 6 lenses in the 50-58 range, from f/1.2 to f/1.8 and that little 50 S lens clearly out resolves them all out of the very center. The Sigma ART is a sharp dead center but nowhere else and has more fringing. When Nikon announced the Z cameras it promoted its mount as being a real advantage but the KZfaq gurus panned it badly and said it was just marketing hype. Then we got the cameras and found it was not hype. Almost all the gurus lost more credibility with their rapid dismissal of the system. They are doing the same with the Z50 that is 80% of the feature set of the Z6. Based on the track record of S lenses the much anticipated 70-200 2.8 will be the first lens I ever ordered before release. It should be stellar. Contrary to the YT gurus and their panning of the Z50 will further ruin their credibility. They all panned the 50 f/0.95 also without ever using one.
@MattIrwinPhotography
@MattIrwinPhotography 4 жыл бұрын
Ah yes bundled, great turn of phrase. Thanks Stan, for next time. And it is true it is not at all like kit lenses of old, the Z50 kit lenses are more like that. Yet Nikon did make a kit / bundle out of it. :) . Yes I agree Stan, the 50mm 1.8 S is something to behold, yet it is just at a very normal price. Nikon made near on perfection there, and it is time the rest of the world understood their achievement. Yes Stan as for the YT gurus I wonder what has driven the Nikon hate of the Z mount. It feels like it is outperforming optically all around it at a fraction of the price. Yet it is simply not being recognised. If you saw my Z50 video you will know that i completely agree with you about the Z50 and the Noct, and I think the Z50 is a bargain for what you will be able to achieve optically. Z50 vid. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pd-WZtKFzKyUf6M.html If I had unlimited budget I would ad the Noct to my kit, I would love to use it for street photography at night. And other places, I suspect it will create some out of this world images. I suppose it is up to people like us to keep telling the world how good the Z mount and the glass is. And the word will get out there one way or another ... I wonder when the 70-200 2.8 S will ship, supposed to be this year. Can't wait to hear what you think of it. For me the 70-200 FL (f Mount) is the best F mount lens I own. Cheers Matt

@@MattIrwinPhotography Hello Matt, thank you for reply :) Thank you for a great advice, i currently work on my D800E, im product photographer so my main tool is Tokina 100mm 2.8 D wich is not expensive but i love quality of this lens (still it's hard to compare to my legendary 100m L canon lens) , for events i use combo of Nikkor 70-200mm F4 (i prefer it before 2.8 because of weight) and Tamron 17-35 mm (and i'm surprised by Tamron's qualitative leap since my Canon days). Probably next year i'm going to move to Z system, but i still wait for nikon to confirm that 12 bit raw recording on Atomos external recorder (to be fair it's confirmed, but they said that some changes has to be made in their service centers kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g5mdaqSe18m6hWw.html) . Anyways, thank you for a good advice, i think i would buy Z7 with 50mm F1.8 bundle because i lack of good portrait lens (i prefer 40mm for that but it's schedueled for 2020). Thank you also for that great channel of yours i realy like to hear your voice and opinions. Best wishes from Poland ! :)

I think the issue with the 24-105mm S will be the price, and it will likely be a constant f4. I wont necessarily have a problem with that, but f4's should be affordable. A 24-105mm f4 S lens wont be. You can expect that lens will be $1200 at the minimum. Wont be worth it for a mediocre aperture and really not a lot of reach. The 24-200mm might be the one to wait for, even if its variable aperture and not an S lens. It will probably be cheaper than the 24-105mm f4 S, and will have considerably more reach. If they can keep that under $1000, I would rather get it than the 24-105mm f4 S.

@@MattIrwinPhotography I currently have the Nikon 24-120mm f4 F-mount, which I use adapted with the FTZ. Got it used for $399 in excellent condition with a 6 months warranty, and have been using it for over a year now with zero issues and great results given its basic premise. However, its difficult to pay $1200+ for something with the same aperture and less reach, even if the IQ is marginally better. If I can get similar IQ to the 24-120 f4 F-mount in a Z-mount 24-200 for $1000 or less, that would be the way to go for me. IQ is not the main concern for a lens like this. Its the lens you bring when you can only bring one and you make the best with what you got. If you want quality zooms, look at 24-70 and 70-200 f4. Go f2.8 if you got the budget and dont mind the much extra weight and size. The Z-mount will not change the status quo in this respect. The 24-105 f4 S lens will not be the silver bullet, unless its somehow an f2.8 constant and priced like an f4. That aint happening.

@@MattIrwinPhotography Yes, very much so. It is sharper than Nikon's older F mount lens in the same range.
