Optically this lens is great, surely better than any other 35mm Nikon has produced, or any other brand with very little falloff in resolving power at the very corners. I have the 50 1.8 S, 35 1.8 S and 24-70 f/4 and an 85 1.8 S on order. I will have to save more to add the 24-70 2.8 which is probably the best mid zoom on the market. So far, every S lens released optically better than any of the F mount lenses of the same focal length. The 50 s the sharpest lens I have used. For me, the least used lens is this 35 1.8 S however because it is not a focal length that my subjects really needs; portraiture, product/catalog, fashion, and events. I am not shooting any videos for clients so if I was, this lens would get used a lot. It seems expensive until you compare it to the price of top lenses it beats. Overall, all the S lenses are a bargain compared to the F mount versions. Don't think of it as a cheap plastic light lens(it is all metal except a barrel sleeve and the hood), it is really well weather sealed so it is not a low-end light lens, it is a great lens that is designed to be strong and light. I have a lot of top F lenses for my D850/D800 but I use the Z6 much more ever since getting it. I finally, recently sold the D850 while it was still worth something, in a year it will not be worth much despite being the best DSLR made.

I recently purchased this Z 35mm 1.8 S. Even though I also own most of the other Nikon Z primes, this is my new favorite lens. It is light weight, well made, edge to edge sharp and its low light capabilities are off the chain. Not cheap, but worth every cent.

I just picked up this lens for under 700$ at B&H. They are running a sale on the 1.8 lenses. I noticed the 50mm 1.8 is under 500$ right now. I think it’s a great lens and 35mm is my go to focal length for most things even though I already have the 24-70 kit lens (also a good lens, really hard to call it a kit lens). I just like having a 35mm prime.

You are kidding me that lens is worth that price point.

If you want the lens not to make any noise you should go to your camera menu and turn low light assist On and enable green light focus assist.

Great review, buddy. You're a very good presenter. I have a z6 and a bunch of f mount lenses. I struggle with z mount because of how good my f mount lenses already are. For instance, my 35 1.4G. I find that there's very little reason to buy anything now, as i feel like I'd be losing something significant (ie my f/1.4 in this instance). I don't feel there's enough of a difference to warrant the selling/buying...

From where do u get the fact that a 35mm focal length on a 35mm format is equivalent to that of the human eye ?

Very few of the Z/S lenses weigh less than the F mount versions and in most cases larger and more expensive. The S 35 1.8 is 13.1 oz while the 35 1.8 F mount is only 10.1 oz - so don't get it twisted.

the z 35mm is not silent!! also not on the video mode! if you go quick around specially if you touch the screen to move the noise is so much you have it on record....:-( i own the 24-70 F2.8 that one is without any noise on video and stills.

They're really cheap on Amazon UK with both Nikon's summer sale and Amazon's discount. Down from £849 to £659, and the 50mm is just £400. I'm torn between picking up this 35mm or waiting for maybe a 35mm 1.2 next year, or just going for the 50mm 1.2, and slowly build up my collection from there, but gosh, that those 1.2s may be cumbersome travel lenses, and I do wish Nikon had 1.4s on the horizon.

IF you had to choose between the “best” lenses for manual focusing for the Z6 (ie using the Rhino Arc II / Focus slider) would you opt for: Nikkor Z 35mm 1.8S ($850) AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1.4G ($1500!) Sigma ART 35mm 1.4DG HSM ($650) Sigma has been recommended, as the Nikkor is overpriced... but - while fitting the Z lens directly onto the Z6 - has slight advantages... I heard you can’t EXACTLY pull focus with Z lenses based on exact position of the manual focus ring??? It’s electronic and relies on autofocus to correct.

I been freaking out over that weird clicking noise on mine because I thought it was broken lol. But your video has the same thing so at least now I know its normal. Still kind of bummed out about it as all my other Z lenses are rather silent in photo mode.

Why's it so much more expensive than the Canon version. It's the lens I wanted most with the Z6. Nikon have priced me out of buying the Z cameras.

I would not consider this Z S 1.8 lens as being small. The SLR version is even smaller (ED 1.8 FX), and the older f: 2.0 (D) more smaller ;)

I am not happy with the 24-70 f4. Ordered a used one from keh at 620 usd.

For me, the 1.8 s lens are overpriced. I wish the lens were smaller like the D series lenses. That would make the system more appealing to new customers. Lastly, the size of the 50mm 1.2 in comparison to the rf and Sony e mount is very disappointing.
