How did you find the lowlight AF. I'm planning on using the touch screen a lot because I work on event stages and get into awkward angles with no much room to move. I'm hoping the touch screen AF will be ok. I only need single focus not continuous or tracking.

Thanks - nice to know I was missed. Outside my price range too. I wanted to see what I might be missing, and it's nice cameras in this price range to have a point of comparison. In the best case scenario some of what makes this camera interesting will come to less expensive cameras.

One of the most thorough reviews of the Z7 that I have seen. Thank you. As a summary, what I like most about my Z7 is the extraordinary ease of use. Often the concepts of "high function" and "ease of use" don't come together. For the Z7 they do! The ability to customize several user modes, all hardware controls, and many screens is extraordinary. Finally, the EVF extends the blue hour further than my previous cameras which limited my ability to focus in dark situations.

Oh my gosh Maarten, What an amazing review. Sterling work. Very grateful to you for the work you do and the professionalism wicth which you do it. I do not know if there is a more engaging and encyclopaedic reviewer of camera gear. I have watched your overview/tutorial videos of cameras I own and some I don't and they are incredibly informative from a how-to-use-well perspective as well as from a should-I-buy-perspective. I find myself agreeing and disagreeing with some of your well marked-out 'I don't like' or 'I do like' foibles and that is just fabulous. Thank you for the detail and time taken to figure out what the average person would want and what the enthusiast would want also. I think - and I felt that you may have shown this in some of your comments - that the Z series of cameras are great but not ground breaking. They provide many wonderful features but they lack some features which current cameras from some other brands provide for a very similar price. We are then paying for the Nikon badge - which is not bad thing as it usually denotes high quality, but bears calling out in this instance. I am a D750 user and am thinking about getting the Z6 - any thoughts? I am not a pro and do not think I will become one so I am wondering if swapping now is a useful thing to do as I have no real problem with the weight and the D750 is more capable than my current but growing expertise. As you can probably hear …. I am leaning towards doing nothing and getting the most from my D750. I am however dealing with a gnawing feeling that I should get into mirrorless. Is that my inner 'sheep' trait calling? What do you think?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your very kind and generous comments, much appreciated. I don't think I'd be in any hurry to upgrade from a D750 - which in my mind remains a terrific camera. Do nothing, but do go out and shoot until your battery is empty and your memory card is full.

A very detailed and comprehensive review of the Z7, Maarten! As I mentioned before, I'm still researching between this Z7 and the Sony a7Rlll, from my Fuji X-T3 system. My main "focus" is creating large prints with the image sharpness, detail and clarity approaching medium format. Not sure yet if the Nikon S lenses would be better for that task than some of the Sony/Zeiss lenses. I have read that the new Nikon S 24 - 70 f/2.8 is superb, as is the Nikon S 50 f/1.8. But then, I've also read that the Sony 90 f/2.8 Macro G OSS is super-sharp as well. Thanks again, sir!
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. Sharp, particularly with those high res sensors is difficult. I often find that even with a tripod that I need to use electronic front and a 1s delay for a truly sharp and clear image. Both the Nikon S series (and the 24-70F2.8 is spectacular) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f8ViZ9mVq66bcmQ.html and the Sony G-Master lenses are the top of the game. I have a slight preference (operationally) for the Sony (I love that focus button!). For detailed quality comparisons you're best to go where I go - dxomark. I haven't had a chance to shoot with the 90mm.

Great review Maarten - even though I have no intention of owning it, this provides a great resource into the way Nikon designs cameras. I'm actually more interested in the Z6 but even that is not on the near horizon since I'm still happy with the X-T20 and still working on figuring out all the hidden details in the way Fuji designs cameras. Still, Nikon could save a lot of $$$ by forgoing the manual and just giving a link to this video....;-) Cheers

Another insightful and well-crafted video, Maarten. One feature any camera would benefit from having are a “Recently Used” and a “Most Often Used” menu tabs. They would build themselves automatically as you use your camera based on menu selections you use all the time and often, and based on menu items you used very recently. This way there would be almost no need to hand-craft Custom menus, or you could create custom menus from those auto-generated menus. I’d call them Smart Menus. And when these become adopted, I expect royalties for my idea :)

Your videos are brilliant, Maarten. You already made a lot of videos about the cameras made by big players in the photography market like Nikon, Panasonic or Sony, but maybe you would review a Pentax camera? Pentax seems to be usually overlooked by youtubers, and i think its a bit unjust, since they appear to me as a reasonably-priced nice piece of photographic equipment. Anyway, i find your vids very helpful, keep on doing your thing as you are great in that!

Thank you for your kind words. I did not observe it in any of my photos, however, I did not intentionally try to create situations where it might be an issue. Maarten, you are one of my top go-to reviews, if not the very best. This review is more of the same---not just good ambrosia, great ambrosia, but, frankly, I'm waiting for an exclusively video-centric review of the Z6. So far, no one has done one. Presently, I have a X-T3, an X-H1, and the Z6 as my main cameras. I'm planning a "user's review" of the X-H1 soon, but I'd love to hear your take on the Z6 and analysis of how to get the best from it regarding video. My own impression vis a via a week of video shooting--I love this camera!

Hello Maarten, Need some guidance,. Assuming the same subject, is there a difference in how one handles a Z6 vs Z7, as it got more MP, does the user need to use higher shutter speeds to minimize shake, as the higher MP will capture the slightest blurr and magnify it? I am deciding which one to get, currently I use a D800 (36MP), and feel Z6 is a step down just from MP point of view, as I pixel peep. Not a video person, and only use camera on holiday landscape and cityscape. Thank you

Hi Maarten, I looked through a z camera in a shop and found the EVF rather blue. I guess it displays the WB settings which were at auto and discovered that you can calibrate the EVF wb seperately in one of the settings, I guess your picture may still be blue in that case. However shooting in raw that can be addressed in post so I wondered if there is a setting for the EVF to be not responsive to the settings and have a neutral EVF? Thanks for your calm vlogs. Jan
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
In a camera shop, the EVF is usually rather yellow - maybe someone had mis-adjusted it. But, yes there is a setting to over-ride white balance in the EVF. Of course, as you point it, it's not always wise to trust the AWB.

AT the 20:57 mark the"200 images in Burst Mode" limit has been explained to me as a safety feature to prevent you from burning-out your shutter if, for instance you put your camera in your bag and forget to turn it off and the shutter=release button is pressing against something in the bag that might inadvertently actuate/trigger the shutter.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
First, why would you put your camera away when it's still powered on, and would it not auto-power off after a minute or two? Then, why would you put your expensive camera gear in a bag with other stuff (ie, not a specific camera bag) where that might occur? But really, you are inventing this - have you, or anyone you actually know, had this happen? And why is Nikon the only manufacturer even remotely concerned about this? And if this is an issue for some people, who not an unlimited option for the rest of us?

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I'm not sure how to quantify "more than capable", but I thought it was better than average at high ISOs. I did not try astro photography, so can really comment - you'll have to be guided by others for those issues.

Thank you for such a thorough and clear review. I am a long time Nikon user and shoot with a D5 and D3s. I have had a look at the Z7 to do two things, firstly replace my now aged carry around Fuji X E1 (i.e. when I am not on assignment) and secondly to start a transition to a lighter kit (I do a lot of travel photography) this would allow me take the D5 plus the Z7 and reduce by one camera, one charger and still have the versatility to use the Z7 as a second body with my current lens collection. I have read that focus speed is slow(er) versus the D850 and quality not quite as good. My question, would you be inclined wait for Z7II down the track with a few of the things you covered fixed especially given I have no pressing need to change kit right now?

I didn't find the focus speed or quality to be lesser than the D850 - it's the lack of a second card slot that makes this a lesser camera. I'm not sure which issues they might address in the next model - and Nikon's release/update cycle is slower than average. When it's time for you to switch/upgrade just do it.

Maarten Heilbron oh, Isn’t increasing the writing speed indirectly increasing the buffer? Since it can write the data to the cards much quicker? Also for the Nikon Z7, Is it true you can shoot at 8fps at 14 bit uncompressed raw and get around 18-20 raw files in a row?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
Um, well, no. The buffer remains the same size - it's a fixed storage capacity on the camera's motherboard. The ability to write from the buffer to the card may change, but I'm not clear that it will increase. I didn't try that, my test was with JPEG only.

So is 144Mbps in 4K, and 36Mbps in FHD enough for high quality video? Seems like a limitation than does not make sense since cards are expensive QXDs... And if filming 24fps, can you select 1/48th on the shutter? I might go the Fujifilm X-T3 afterall, so I am not sure about the focus breathing on the Fujicrons F2s.

Well, two or three years ago we thought it was ... Sony's maximum bit rate for 4K is 100Mbits. There is no 1/48 shutter, but I defy you to tell 1/60 from 1/48 - this is extremism. There's no need to worry about focus breathing if you use manual. Just sayin.

Maarten, I‘ve got a question I can’t find an answer to. In A and M mode the displays show the right exposure, e. g. an underexposed picture is darker. Sure, this is a big advantage of mirrorless cameras. However, in shutter mode S the display doesn’t show a correct preview. With the exact same settings, whereas M mode shows the actual preview of the picture on the display (e. g. a dark, underexposed picture) in shutter mode the picture isn’t shown with the chosen settings (e. g. it appears bright and correctly exposed). Is there any technical reason for this? (Option d8 “apply Settings to live view” is activated) Thanks.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 4 жыл бұрын
In terms of the display, there should be no difference between those modes. Let me confirm - in shutter mode the picture that you take would be underexposed while the preview seems properly exposed? What does the meter or the histogram show? Are you using AutoISO? Is EV at 0?
@MBSKanal
@MBSKanal 4 жыл бұрын
Maarten, in M the settings are f4, 1/60, ISO 400, EV is -3. The picture on the screen is underexposed, histogram is on the left. When I switch to S mode, all settings remain but the screen is brighter and the histogram moves slightly to the right. This is weird, it looks like the Z7 changes option d8 on its own when switching to S. d8 is still on “apply settings”, though.
@MBSKanal
@MBSKanal 4 жыл бұрын
In S mode the f4 is flashing, showing, that the camera can‘t expose the scene correctly. I‘d still expect the screen to show the actual exposure.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 4 жыл бұрын
@@MBSKanal The settings don't change between M and S? If the histogram is changing, something is different. And the meter reading (in manual there is no EV unless AutoISO is on) must also be changing. I don't think that d8 is implicated in this. When you switch from M to S, you give the camera control of the aperture, and it will adjust it, to the extent it can) to properly expose the image. If you are starting in M with three stops under exposed, changing to S means the camera will change the settings.

Thank you. But is it as good as the D850? I would buy the D850 tomorrow, however I have to wonder if DSLR's will survive. Sony has the good mirrorless glass that Nikon is still working on, but I feel that it would take the a7R3 and the a9 to give the usage range of the D850. I have no interest in video, in which the Sony has the upper hand. So I am hoping the the Z7 is an exact 'stills' mirrorless version of the D850. Comments ????? ........Cheers
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
That's a subjective question, and the reply depends on which factor(s) you weight most heavily. DSLRs will survive, just a theatres, LP records and radio survive. However, the trend is certainly towards mirrorless. I called my review of the D850 "the last full frame mirrorless", but it was a little tongue in cheek. It's not an exact duplicate of the D850, and a detailed comparison would yield preferences on both sides. Most of the decision factors will be personal, stylistic and dependent on your workflow and experience. I don't believe you'll be disappointed, but I can't be sure as the partnership between you and your camera depends on many issues. Hope this helps.

How is the video performance in z7? Is it crop or full frame on video?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 4 жыл бұрын
Video is excellent. I'm never sure why crop is an issue for some. In my mind, I'd rather have the crop so that the image area used makes the mathematical conversion from the sensor to the size of the video (after all, 4K is only 3840x2160 pixels) easier and as a result better. The odd requirement that the full width (as obviously it won't be height) is used just makes the pixel binning and line skipping more difficult and artifacty. If that requires some small crop, so be it. Your artificial need for this requirement should not be allowed to over-ride quality, which I am certain is the manufacturer's first requirement.

@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
Oh, I thought only Nikon. Whatever, it's artificial and unnecessary. May I just ask how many times you've found your camera in your bag with 200 unwanted images? Would you put it away with the power on? I don't object to the setting, if that's what you want, but unlimited should be an option if I want.
@skakdosmer
@skakdosmer 5 жыл бұрын
I guess I would not knowingly put my camera away with the power still on (although it has happened inadvertently). But there are people who do this regularly. Tony Northrup has stated several times that he pretty much leaves the camera on all the time. The camera will of course enter sleep mode after a time, but he finds it quicker to wake up that way. And if he recommends it, I'm sure that at least some of his followers will do it as well. I don't worry much about the question - for my sake you could have as many in a burst as you like. But if it were possible to set it yourself, I think I'd prefer to set the limit at 200. But let me ask you, how many times have you taken more than 200 stills in a burst? Arthur Morris, the well-known award winning bird photographer, has sometimes in his lectures at B&H told about photographers who, when a bird was approaching, just held down the shutter button, BRRRRRRRRR etc. And he often felt tempted to say, "let's compare your 200 pictures with my 3. Who ever took the best shots wins all of the other's camera gear".
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
All valid points, always nice to have you participate in the discussion. While leaving the power on is a reasonable choice with a DSLR, it can be absolute power death for a mirrorless, which consumes much more power when on - however, most also have an auto shutoff.
