Thank you for the video, I always appreciate your style and humor.... I m a professional photographer working with Nikon, I mostly shoot yoga retreats and music concerts of spiritual style of music, in many cases sound can be really low during the music performance meaning that if I decide to make a click everybody's attention turns on me because of its sound, he he ! I have seen many killing eyes so I now shoot only when the music goes loud .... plus most of the concerts are happening in low light conditions, and sometimes there can by extatic dancing so I need speed and fast focus, so I guess Sony is better... I m in love with this sony camera, but does it worth all the extra money in my case? Plus I already have nikkor lenses, if I get to choose to work with sony the adaptors will be working correctly with the body ? ... Keep on keeping on !

great review. I'm giving my A7rIII to my son at college. I was considering replacing it with the Nikon as the menu system on the Sony is frustratingly (is that a word?) complex and I also was a Nikonian for decades before I got the Sony at the recommendation from my cousin who is a pro. But after watching this, the choice seems pretty clear to stay in the Sony world and get the updated version. Thanks for helping me spend $700 more than I planned!

Hi! i’m looking into getting the Sony A7R IV. The one thing that is holding me back is the fact that it does not have auto stacking or auto bracketing. would you say that plays a roll in the quality of images? Or could you please tell me more based on this subject. I really want to purchase this camera but before i go all Sony i want to make sure it’s right for me! thank you!

The write protect switch was silly on ordinary sd cards, and it is good Sony omitted them on the tough. But... If on a normal card it breaks of you don't lose any pictures you just can't use it anymore meaning your can't write anymore. So you may lose the ability to capture the moment but you don't lose any already made pictures.

Unfortunate misconception. Unless you're talking 25,600+ ISO the sensor resolution doesn't really make a difference. There's more noise per pixel on a higher res sensor, but because it has more pixels and is recording more information you end up with about the same amount of total noise in your image.

This is just my opinion, but I hope the back screen on mirrorless cameras is like an appendix on humans: an artifact of evolution. Yes, the newbies coming to mirrorless from smart phones will want to chimp each shot, but the EVF is the way of the future IMHO. Hopefully, the next wave of technology will offer a modular EVF, on multiple screens. On Sony, hopefully using the higher-bandwidth WiFi being tested on the new A9II.

@@stuartschaffner9744 view finder is good , not always that user friendly though if you have a big snoz and 60 year old eyes. if they made evf a tad bigger and set back from the body a bit more with a bigger eye cup , that would be a nice improvement imo.
@Hilmiapak

To the point where you cannot change from eye focus to another point. It is not true. On Z7 you can change the focus wherever you want by pressing the ok button. A square appears with triangles around it; you can bring it to anything or any person you want to fix focus to. And press ok again. If it moves it autofocuses to the target you choose. I don't have Sony. I don't know how it goes.

@@mikldude9376 , good points. I continue to hope that there will soon be a real evolution in EVFs once people get used to them more. EVFs have at least three big advantages over OVFs. First, of course, an EVF gives you a multimedia display not only of the scene you are composing but also the status of the camera controls. Since this fusion of data is controlled by a rather powerful computer, it can be customized by the photographer to fit their workflow. I do a lot of wildlife photography. I set exposure almost always manually, using the histogram display plus my thumb on an adjustment wheel. Many photographers use autoexposure of some kind, so the histogram would simply be a big distraction. One menu setting can add or remove the histogram. Second, the EVF can be as bright as you want and the EVF's housing shields your eye from bright sunlight. That housing also shields that bright glow from your surroundings so your subject is not distracted. Finally, camera designers have not yet begun to use the fact that an EVF doesn't have to be closely tied to the optical axis of the lens. A high-speed data cable is a lot cheaper and more flexible than fiber optics, and high-speed wifi (being tried for other reasons on the A9ii) is even more flexible. I hope that EVFs of the future will be modular and customizable for your particular workflow. As for your 60-year old eyes, my 75-year old eyes are very happy about EVFs. My right eye even has a cataract that is overdue for removal. It likes the fact that you can adjust the brightness. For dim-light photography you can also, on the Sony, toggle the "Setting Effect" menu item to go between a view that shows you what your exposure will be and a view that is always evenly lit. (In the latter, you lose the histogram, sadly.)

That 6.5 fps on the a7R IV versus its rated 8 fps makes sense if the e-front curtain is turned off (which by the sound alone of the demo, it is). The a7 III slows down by 1-ish fps too. BUT it prevents the weird hard-edged bokeh you'd get above 1/1000th of a second otherwise, so it's a worthwhile tradeoff, I think.

Since the firmware upgrade, I've not had any problems with Nikons Eye-AF but agree the Sonys Autofocus is better. It's quite an admission for you Jared to say that the AF on the SONY was so much better that you were able to get shots with the Sony on your shoot with Bernie, that you might have missed with the Nikon. You did however, previously state that you took one of your greatest photos ever with the Z7 at NASA. The Z7 seemed to nail the eye quite well on that shoot.

If video is your primary goal then the Z6 is the way to go. All Z-lenses are extremly silent and have minimal focus breathing but keep in mind if you need manual focus, the Z cameras do not support linear focus. However this might get fixed in the next firmware update.

When those new stupid fast SanDisk CF express cards come out, in theory wont will that jump that burst rate up quite a bit?

Marcus Brown No. But it will speed up how long you wait after a burst to continue shooting.

I shot 2500 shot on Sony Battery NP-FZ100, 40% juice left. Didn't review a lot though (was sports shoot). Still the screen was on almost always (for composing). So that 700 'CIPA' rating is very strict. 2280 Mah is great on Sony, nikon only 1500 mah.

64 ISO with less megapixels is going to be cleaner *"at higher ISOs"* ?
@nrocha2466

You should lookup Jim kassons tests on these bodies. the Sony A7RIV beats the Nikon Z7 at high ISOs , and in addition the A7RIV has a higher sensitivity at ISO 100...meaning it's closer to ISO 75...it also has a touch higher dynamic range at those lower ISOs ..around 2/3rd of a stop sensitivity advantage over the z7

Hmm, looking at dpreview studio shots, the Z7ii is more detailed and fares better in high ISO than the A7rIV

Hi Jared. Can you clear something up for me - and this may totally be my ignorance. The ISO range on the 7R4 appears to go down to 50 - am I wrong?

Base ISO is 100 on the Sony, if you set the ISO lower than that you lose dynamic range.

I went for the Z7 just a few months before the A7 Riv came out and even if the A7 Riv would have been the first camera to maybe convince me to switch to Sony, I don't regret my choice, mainly cuz I've been so used to shoot Nikon for years. Just hating the battery grip too

Dimitri Baer I had jumped from Nikon early 2016, as seeing the shots in the viewfinder, seeing adjustments live as you are changing them, better AF options, already convinced me to switch. If the Z7 had come out 3-4 years earlier I’d of tried it first as I had all the Nikon glass. As it turns out I’m so far still happier as I’m convinced the Sony glass seems to be the best of all in my opinion.

Great Video Jared. I am still using the Nikon D800 and have thought about switching to Sony but I have so much Nikon glass that I am holding out for the Nikon. I have heard rumors of a Nikon Z8/9 that should be even better so not sure whether to get the Z7 or wait on the next Nikon mirrorless.
