Nikon Z8 vs D850 and why I am keeping my D850 but also getting a Z8, finally a worthy successor from Nikon to prove they are STILL in the camera game!

I feel the same. I waited past the Z9, still happy with my D850. I'll wait as long as I can before changing, but if I make a change in the next year, it will be to add in the Z8.

See this 8,a perfect medium between the DSLR and mirrorless,a proper bridge connecting the high-ends and the ones with less priorities in mirrorless lineup.

When I moved from my D800 to the Z series three years ago it was more of a challenge than I expected. In the next year or so I will purchase a Z8. I needed to purchase a 14mm zoom and this was what prompted me to go with the Z series. I have not been disappointed.

@@willsfrantz the changes to menu layouts. I had to make notes to myself as to how to bracket, for example. I'm still confused when I use my older camera on occasion. I would never jump back and forth between different brands because the learning curve is too great.

Z8 looks like a fantastic camera. In fact I would buy it if I was in the market. But my D850 is kicking butt and doing everything I want brilliantly. In fact I am about to pick up a 200-500 for it and will shoot this kit for years to come.

I have a D850 and rented the Nikon 200-500 zoom just for fun. That lens kicks butt on the D850- stunning image quality.

Although there was plenty of media spin at the time, the Z7 was never a “pro” camera body. Nikon hadn’t produced a D850/D6 mirrorless option until the Z9 which was “kind of” a mirrorless “upgrade” option for both. Primarily what delineates professional body user interface, robustness and weatherproofing.

I have a Z5 but will never part from my D850 and other dslr's. Nikon is also targeting the mirrorless world but that is no reason to ditch your dslr. Considering the Z8: it will be a great camera but the fact that is cost me 4600 Euro (so 5000 when converted to USD) keeps me away from it.

I had 2 z9s for a shoot in scottish highlands climbing , with z 85 f1.2 snd z 70-200 f2.8 /// my buddy had d850 with new 70-200 fl ed vr and 85mm f1.4 . I gave up the Zeds after the 2 weeks , untill the shots came back from 4900 dpi printer , wow my dream camera was beat by an old dslr 😁 , it shows these guys are pushing z cameras at people , they test z8s against d850s with inferior lenses , or different settings , we proved it , video will be posted soon next to the guys z8 with 85 1.2 against a d850 with 85mm f1.8 budget lens ? Thats a poor test , we put the 85mm f1.4 on the oldvdslr the story dramatically changed + banding is a mirrorless problem Not a dslr problem

I don't miss any click at all since I got my Z7. It is great not to have that sound when one is in a quiet area, like a museum and not announce to everyone in the room that you are there. Also for weddings in a church. I've been taking pictures for over 50, and again, I don't miss it at all.

I shoot landscape and astro, I don't think you should change 850 or Z7ii to Z8! Because first two cameras in the top in all sensor parameters!

I feel the z8 is just a baby z9 and not a successor to the d850. The d850 was a primary focused on stills and the video was just a side note. Where the z8 and z9 is primarily a video camera with stills capability. To be a successor to the d850, the z8 should be more focused on stills, like having a higher megapixel count. Just my opinion

Everyone has their option which is fine. The Z8 is just as strong of a still camera as it is a strong video camera which is why it’s a hybrid . I’ve owned a D850 since it was released , great camera. I’ve owned the Z9 since last May…use it 98% still camera with occasional video, not missing anything I can do on an 850.

There is nothing the D850 can do that the Z8 can't do. But there are hundreds of things the Z8 can do, but D850 can't do. Once I went mirrorless, it there is no way I will go back to dslr. Like going from film to digital.

I think that is a really good point... but remember the Z9 is a flagship... like the D6 before it, so we're talking flagship capability at "prosumer" cost!

The D850 has better dynamic range,better image quality and better signal to noise ratio,those are very important to a still shooter . Z7iii will be 60mp and solely still focused so may appeal more to still shooters .

Well, what all of you say is true. The d850 I didn’t mind buying, because it was primarily a stills camera, the video side sucked. But I didn’t mind because I don’t shoot videos, so when the z8 came out, I was hope it would be primarily for stills. You see, one of the things that makes these cameras so expensive is they are now focused on primarily video. And since I’m not interested in video I hate having to pay for something I’ll never use. It would be nice to see a camera made that is more for the stills shooter.

Wait for 15 years Nikon Z8 cameras still do not have flip screen to vary-angle selfies, body size and weight are big and heavy, I have to change to Canon for R6II camera which is lighter and have vary-angle flip screen.

Don't get stuck thinking too much about camera bodies. Invest in good Glass! With that said, Z glass is far superior compared to F glass with a noticeable difference in sharpness from corner to corner. If you like softer pictures, then F lenses are ok. You can always convert a sharp detailed picture if preferred to a softer picture in post. It is the main reason why I choose to get rid of my D850. Selling the D850 now while it is still worth some money along with most of my F lenses.

What monitor are you using, if you think the D850 is soft, or might be your eyes, or you are might just after a reaction!!

@Paul Mitchell I guess you fear comparing Z glass over F glass to really find out results for yourself or want Z glass, but don't want to spend money or don't have the money to change over to a far superior F mount. I am not here to troll or get a reaction. I am just stating results from testing I have done and others have done.

I owned the the Z7ii with Z glass I could not see any difference it’s just marketing, some people fall for it some people don’t!

@@paulmitchell1580 Depending which Z (s-line) and F glass (Gold) you are compairing and at which fstops. the Z glass sharpness is undoubtedly sharper at wide open compared to F Glass.. and when you stop down there is a point where the difference is minor.

@@efsu8374 If only sharpness was the only thing that was important. Reality is it's not, the rendering is also very important to some users. When you say F glass, that is very vague - there is a lot of glass out there not just by Nikon but other makers. No doubt the newer lenses are sharper, yet is this enough to justify the cost? Or does it matter? For many perhaps it doesn't To me this is nice but not for me In terms of sensor performance any of the D8XX series bodies will perform as well or better. The grip has been messed up in design, and we've no drive mode dial either. Too many F mount deals around to worry about the Z stuff, I got some amazing lenses for peanuts prices and they are more than good enough optically

Z8 is by far better camera...not even in the same league. Z8 is a great video camers but faaar from oriented only for it... The AF is am azing for anything. The electronic viewfinder is waaay better than optical. I mean the live view exposure is just a game changer along with the eye af and subject tracking is enough to kick out the D850 from the game. When you add much better lenses you have it 🤷 The truth is once you try a goood mirrorless you never go back to DSLR. Majority of people who are still against mirrorless either dont have the money to switch or heavent tried it yet, and thats ok. I dont have money for Porsche I drive a Ford but i just cant be stupid to say that Ford is better 😂😊 That said I would rather have a D850 and 2500$ in my pocket than a Z8 and be broke Cheers 😊

That's the thing that gets me. Most of the people lifting up the D850, while denigrating the Z8, have likely never even held a Z8. For every one person who'll day they owned the Z8 or Z9 and returned it, there's hundreds who haven't tried either. They just want to defend the D850 because it's what they own (or want), so they're trying to convince other people. Just because you love it so much doesn't mean there isn't something better or better for someone else.

The Z8 is NOT a good choice for D850 upgrade: there are no actual real benefits. The sensor on the D850 is still one of the best out there with a better dynamic range than even the Z9.

I keep seeing this. It's a .2 difference when measured and it's barely discernable on any of the main platforms people use to view media. Literally, not a single person is going to look at the pictures and be able to tell or care, unless you're talking high end product or billboard photography, in which case you're likely shooting with a medium format camera. Oh and by the way, the Z8 has pixel shift that can render a 100+ megapixel photo. It is kind of ridiculous to say the Z8 offers no advantages. First, you don't know everybody's use case and second, it clearly has many differences, including the (stacked) sensor. Photography is more than megapixels and dynamic range. Do people think things all the way through before commenting? Lol

D850 with pro lenses traunces the z8 , salesmen sell sand to arabs , i ditched a mk 4 z9 for another d850 , after 2 weeks climbing shoot in scottish highlands , focus was superb , but actual images at 4900 dpi just didnt do it with z 85 1.2 against a d850 with 85mm f1.4 , why ?
