This camera has been on my wishlist for over a decade… and it’s finally here! I’ve seen some rumblings about the Zf overheating. Before I pull the plug on this body, I’m going to wait for a longer term review (ie. 3 or 6 month review) and see if this overheating issue is really a thing. Will be on the lookout for your video on that! :)
@TouchLifeStudio
@TouchLifeStudio 10 ай бұрын
@@MichaelSeneschal the Zf has the overheating symbol, at least based on the menu for the Zf. So I do expect that is a possibility, which is likely if used for video work. However, I think most people get the Zf for photo experience. But we shall see….

I received my sunset orange Zf yesterday. Initial reaction is it feels like a mirrorless in DSLR body. It’s bigger and heavier than expected and the shutter sound almost exactly the same as Df. All the dials are the same too. I can see why people complain the lack of grip because it’s weight. Focus works fantastic, feel as good as my Sony A7R V. Now I have to buy more lenses, only bought a 28mm f2.8 SE which is not bad. The one I want is voightlander 40mm f1.2, I have a Sony e mount version and the style and color should be a good match to Zf. Too bad B&H is out of stock. I’m a photo only user, so wish it has a Z8 screen instead of flip out and wish Nikon replace those rubber cover with proper door.

Nikon have nailed it. The great thing about mirrorless is it allows manufacturers to go back to this type of design. The ZF is an instant classic. It is a camera that people will be talking about in years to come.

It certainly not meant for big lenses. Already tried. Not gonna lie, not good for ergonomics. However, this high tech in a retro camera messes me 🤭. It’s hard to miss a shot.

Got mine last week, sussing it out to see if it will replace my Leica SL. Couple of notes: - dial on the top right vy the prism is Shutter Speed, not f-stop. - there is a protective screen cover - this is what is causing the "lines". Remove it. 😜😎 So far, I'm enjoying it. My items of note so far: - zoom function for MF is very nice, but does not reset to full view (that I know of) very easily (at very least, it should do this if you depress the shutter halfway or another way to instantlly reset) - the shutter button looks great, but has a vagueness in feel. It does not have a noticeable "half" spot, so I find myself accidentally taking pictures when I only wanted to activate the camera - front and rear wheels are not very customizable while shooting only basic options - connectivity to an iphone is not intuitive at all, and the SnapBridge app is similarly vague - it is still unclear to me how to activate it to download pictures. Overall, I really love the camera

Thanks for your feedback. This was my first loot at the camera at that time, so I unboxed it as you watched, so yes, the top right is the shutter speed. As soon as I removed the protective film , the lines went away. Again, this was my very first hands on look, I admit my errors. Great camera overall, I just want to slow down and enjoy the simple view and feel of the Zf. I have some thoughts about the shutter button, but I’m still thinking it through. Thanks for your feedback.

Yes, retro style is why this camera is so unique. I expect that Z6III will be a more advanced camera technologically or at least with more megapixels. All of these new cameras are fantastic, much comes down to user preferences, lens selection, ergonomics, and battery life. Thank you for your support, more Zf videos are coming...

I agree it looks great. If it doesn't have any problems, it looks like it will be the best value mirrorless body Nikon have released to date. I had a black FE & my brother had a black FE2 back in the day and we loved those cameras. I have not yet gone mirrorless and on top of that I had believed it was very unlikely that I would buy a brand new camera body ever again (as I always buy used these days.) This Zf might be the exception. I'll see what people think of the Zf once it gets out into many hands - and not just those of the early adopters.
@TouchLifeStudio
@TouchLifeStudio 10 ай бұрын
I can understand the desire for waiting to see whether there will be any issues. One thing that I would note is that Zf is not Nikon’s 1st mirrorless camera and they have been through a number of cameras and firmware updates. With that it gives much confidence relative to Nikon’s commitment to its customers and their products. However, these are just my thoughts. Thank you for your feedback and comments.

I got my with the sunset orange and totally using it professionally. No different then all the Holdfast camera straps I feel the colors also add a touch of style. But to each their own of course. I spent hours with mine yesterday getting it all set up to match my Z8 or at least close. I still back focus from my Dslr days but on this camera there’s a bit more distance holding this camera and where the AF button is, so I’m actually going to see how I like not back button focus on this body. Time will tell but my little experiment yesterday with it that may not be an issue anymore which assign to another function. Enjoy this camera as I know I will too
@TouchLifeStudio
@TouchLifeStudio 10 ай бұрын
I actually do think that sunset orange is a fantastic color and we all need some color in our lives. Absolutely valid point about the holdfast straps, those do look pro so and if matched with Zf sunset orange - oh, that’s awesome. I’m used to back button focusing as well but adjusting to not using it also. The 3D tracking on Zf is great and slight press of a shutter button does most of that. Plus it is nice to slow down with the Zf. But for professional use, bbf is still a real thing. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Nice video and similar to my first thoughts (I received mine yesterday). In terms of the two 'muffin' classic look z lenses I would definitely go with the 40mm (I have both). I would also recommend the older 58mm 1.4g as an adapted lens. people have very mixed feelings about it but if you learn how to shoot it you will fall in love with it...proper character lens.

Canon cameras have the wheel to easily scroll through images, but Nikon does it better. Using the touch screen, just slide your finger left or right along the very bottom of the screen while viewing photos to quickly scroll. To the best of my knowledge the first camera to do this was the D500, so it’s been a feature of Nikon cameras for a long time. Every Nikon Mirrorless camera has this feature. While viewing photos, slide your finger left to right along the very bottom of the screen.
@TouchLifeStudio
@TouchLifeStudio 10 ай бұрын
Thank you. I have been using the slide function since I hade the D500 and it’s great. I still use it. There is just something about the tactile experience that makes things easy. It certainly easy to go slide back and forth but I wish, given the retro style of the Zf, it would be nice to have a “retro” way to scroll to pics without using the screen. Perhaps I ask for too much from Nikon. 🤷

A pity that the screen is not perfectly aligned with the body when closed. It protrudes a few millimetres. It's little, yes, but I think it's a design error. In addition, the screen axis also protrudes a lot from the camera body. A pity.

@@enshongmiranda as an xt5 and xt20 owner, I don't mind using the retro knobs to adjust settings. But to click from 1/60 to A took 8 clicks on the knob just to get to aperture priority, instead of a simple switch. Same thing with ISO. Logically Fujifilm's controls make more sense but they do take more time to click through than my experiences with Nikon DF, a camera that had its own problems. The ZF seemed to have cleaned up the controls quite a bit compared to the DF.

@@enshongmiranda I think Fujifilm can fix this by implementing a quick switch next to the ISO knob and next to the shutter speed knob, just like the quick auto switch near the aperture ring on the lenses. This would address the problem while maintaining the control logic

Nikon totally screwed this camera up. I have two Z6ii's and use them successfully for my paid gigs/weddings/street/travel. Brilliant cameras along with 6 Z lenses, are all I need. I was waiting for the 6.3 update. All I wanted was slightly better AFC eye track, and I was done for. Z9/8 too big and heavy for me and very expensive here in Australia (7K body only for Z8). I don't like the silly retro style, but would have suffered it, to get the slight update I was looking for. I shoot zero videos so am a 100% stills guy. I was gutted when I saw that stupid flip around screen - a total deal-breaker for a stills photographer. It's OK though - as mentioned I really love my two Z6ii's and I rarely miss shots that aren't focused - even in fast moving events with folk spinning around and dancing. I guess Nikon can't please everybody - if they brought this out with the same screen as the Z6/8/9, then all the video creators would be wailing - that's life!
