What a strange mix of weakness and solipsistic narcissism.

@@leonylias It is the usual rhyme for thinkers like this: They are motivated by a fear of death and an unwillingness to accept mortality, and take this as their starting point for a rejection of empiricism and intersubjective comparison to instead complain that they are unable to reach the "thing in itself" and as such clothe themselves in solipsism. Safely ensconced in this fortress they then go on to use their mind to build grand edifices to their own thoughts and at the end declare that in spite of being prisoners inside the bars of Cogito ergo sum they have still somehow reached beyond the limits of human experience to find God. I find it to be utterly predictable navel gazing. he is a very sophisticated writer though, his mastery of language is impressive, though I suspect this might be a translation?

@@rangda_prime I very much appreciate your in-depth response! There are many times in Zorba the Greek that Kazantzakis taunts himself for being too afraid to accept mortality, and instead dives into his own mind to 'explain away the situation' using concepts and ideals. Zorba is painted as a reckless and free spirit while his companion is a learned intellectual who is unable to live life burdened by his own mind. I see the clash between having the strength to truly see things and merely intellectualising as a theme running through all his work; I'm sure growing up in Crete with a military father and grandfather while having an inclination towards reading and writing himself planted this war in his mind from an early age.
