In this book talk, Nile Green traces the ties between industrialization, imperialism and the production of religion in the Indian Ocean. By developing a model of religious economy, he traces how Muslim migration from the oceanic hinterlands of Bombay fuelled demand for the wide range of religious suppliers who created an industrialized ʻeconomy of enchantment.' By outlining these connections between religious movements and industrialization in 19th century Bombay, Nile Green walks us through one of the most fascinating periods of world history.
Nile Green is a Professor of South Asian and Islamic history at UCLA. His publications include "Indian Sufism since the Seventeenth Century", "Islam and the Army in Colonial India", "Bombay Islam: The Religious Economy of the West Indian Ocean", and "Sufism: A Global History."
