In this video we are exploring a variation of the iodine clock reaction that can be pretty easily done at home. There are load of different variations out there and I am going to explore another one in the near future.

+Philipp Kollenz I think it is possible. cool it down to like 1C and it will go super slow. On top of that, increase the concentration of vitamin C, decrease the H2O2 and play around and it might be able to get that long. I do want to revisit the oscillating clock and i will do that soon :)

+GamerGuy ephedrine would be hard to do as a total synthesis. It's a stereoisomer of pseudoephedrine (sudafed) but it has a stronger effect as a bronchodilator than pseudoephedrine. It's sold behind the counter along with the Sudafed products. It's marketed as a bronchodilator for mild asthma symptoms. The brands are Bronkaid and Primatine tablets, and the Primatine has a generic. They were all off the market for a while but are now back on the market. Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine are the same molecule it's just that it has 2 chiral centers so you end up with 4 stereoisomers, 2 of which are l- and d-ephedrine and 2 of which are l- and d-pseudoephedrine. Both ephedrine and pseudoephedrine can be reduced to methamphetamine quite easily (you're just removing the hydroxyl group from the beta carbon and bam! meth) so that's why they're behind the counter and a limit placed on how much you can buy. The limit is actually quite large though. (I'm going off of how the laws are here in Michigan, other states might have stricter laws, and I don't know what the laws are like in Canada or Europe for pseudoephedrine and ephedrine.) You could extract it from plant sources.

Nice white background! I really like the demonstration when the solution is stirred - the colour appears suddenly and uniformely. (Some people think that this dark-blue colour appears as quick as a night in Egypt, and that's why this reaction is also known by the name "Egyptian Night") BTW, I thought that it's I2 that makes a nice blue complex with starch, but apparently I was wrong.

This reaction is something like the Lugols test, it happens because the iodine gets inside of the helicoidal structure of the starch (which is a polysaccharide) , the elemental iodine color is blue , so that's why you get that color

The chemical reaction looks great, and a very fascinating observation of the chemical process through a visual frame! I carefully followed your lecture, and I would like to thank you very much for the education, and I was carried away by creativity to perform such an experiment in my laboratory and it really worked, I am amazed :) I had to record and share with the audience and people who know me such a magical effect of chemistry. Now I noticed that the reaction is not reversible, so when the solution turns black, that's the end. So I would ask the question, what needs to be improved in this experiment, in order to obtain an oscillatory chemical reaction with several repeating episodes of color changes, using the same substrates and reactants? I would be even more grateful, although since I am a chemist I will do my best to come up with a solution by myself, but in the meantime, please give me some space and time to try on my own, so if you have a solution for the illustrative reaction, write me the recipe on how to make it, or even better post a new video about it? Thanks bye :)

My science/sex ed teacher used this method to explain STDs. Each of us got a glass of clear liquid. ONE glass started with all the necessary ingredients to cause the reaction (minus a pipette of other liquid) we were instructed to intermingle our contents with anyone we chose (or not to intermingle with anyone we did not want to) for two minutes then we were all given an STD "test kit" (the pipette) we were told only one person started with the STD, and if this pipette causes your liquid to change color, you were infected. Class of 40 students, two stayed clear.

Why vitamin c? Vinegar or any other household acid seems like it should work as well. I haven't tried with the clock reaction, but vinegar definitely makes a black/purple starch/iodine solution turn back into a clear one. Apparently clearing out all of the triiodide. I've yet to try this, but apparently adding a base makes it turn back to a black/purple color. So, it seems it could be used as a base indicator. Which is probably something tons of people already know. I'm just happy to have figured it out.

What's going on here is that the oxidizer and the reducer are competing to do their particular magic to the iodine. In the end, it's a numbers game -- whichever solution is more abundant will win. If there is more reducer, the final solution will be clear. If there is more oxidizer, it will be dark. So, if you want to clarify it after, add more of solution A.
