This is just a regular energizer lithium battery, and I want to see what's inside of it.
WARNING: Opening batteries like this is dangerous, and almost always a huge pain. This experiment was performed in a controlled environment. Do not recreate anything you see.

I think your problem here was that you used what looks like a pyrex dish (lower case it’s important). Old Pyrex was made from borosilicate glass which is highly resistant to changes in temperature, while new pyrex and other cheap glassware is soda lime glass which can shatter and explode if it heats up or cools down too quickly. What likely happened wasn’t that it was more reactive, but that the fire heated up the water which heated up the soda-lime glass causing it to explode. It was likely a drastic change in temperature to the glass causing the explosion, not the lithium itself. Edit: after reviewing again I can confirm this as the glass breaks first before the explosion.

Worse, lithium reactions with water are so violent that if there's enough lithium, the reaction can actually separate the water. Even without that though, lithium battery fires are self-oxygenating just because of the chemical reactions happening inside the battery cell. The best firefighting techniques aren't so much putting the fire out as keeping it from burning anything else.

I remember when Lithium was becoming a “Thing”. I was living in Brasil at the time and Tourmaline was all the rage in the stones market. Lithium is associated with Tourmaline (Lithium of Tourmaline) and much like Mica in its formation. I kept telling the miners that I worked with to just stockpile it that it could be useful someday. Apparently, it wasn’t a useful form of Lithium? IDK, however, I do know that a hell of a lot of it was dumped in the piles and down mountainsides.

Now you have a little bit of an idea what firefighters are facing every time they approach another battery-operated car crash/fire. Think aboit the fact that battery-operated cars have thousands of times that much lithium in their battrry packs, then go look up "thermal runaway." While battery-operated car fires are omited from most corporate media (because they're all run by 5 corporations in the USA which are all run bu ecomentalists), these fires are becoming much mote common. Australia had had several dealerships burned down after lithium battery cell failures in brand new cars. These things make the Pinto look safe by comparison.
@ldnwholesale8552
@ldnwholesale8552 2 күн бұрын
The Pinto was never unsafe. Though could have been better. Every EV however is a time bomb waiting too blow. As too are millions of phones and power tools. But they are a lot smaller but have caused fires, lots of them.

There's no metallic lithium in a lithium ion car battery, it's call a lithium ion battery for a reason, as it contains lithium ion salts. The thing that burns is the organic electrolyte, which is alcohol based. Lithium ion car battery fires are extremely rare, like 100 times less likely than a liquid fuel car.

This is why you're no longer able to ship these by air, and if you do, they have to be carefully labeled and extreme protective measures taken. A UPS plane was transporting these and caught fire and went down. When they catch fire, they burn very hot and very intense and it's almost impossible to put it out by any means, especially oxygen starvation. They have since improved protection and stowage and labeling for these things.
