Nimbin might be known as Australia's hippie capital, but its residents are far from welcoming. At least, that was the impression we got when we first arrived. As we found out, there's a lot more to those people than what meets the eye, and there's more to the story than a bunch of reclusive weed-smoking hippies not wanting to talk to us.
Also we made a recreation of my favourite scene from Pineapple Express which I though was very super cool.
Thanks to everyone who took part in this video and sorry to anyone we pissed off. Nimbin is actually a pretty cool place, but if you're heading down there, try listening to the locals' stories instead of buying weed. The town is inexorably tied to cannabis culture, but there's a lot more going on than just pot. It's not just Byron Bay's stoned little cousin, although it is also definitely Byron Bay's stoned little cousin.

I live completely on the opposite side of the world, culturally, in Texas USA. Its regressive, stubborn, only cares about the richest folks. This video seemed so odd and fascinating. Your self-defeating humor is funny. Although as a USA person, I didn't understand some things because we have it labeled differently. It's not so much that locals dont want to be filmed (there's hundreds of documentaries where lots of locals are interviewed) it's more the approach you took. If you ever decide to come back id recommend walking around without your cameras on the first day or two just talking to people and letting them know what your intentions are with your filming, a good place to start would be the hemp embassy, ask for Michael he will be able to point you in the direction of interesting people who may be keen for an interview. Nimbin has definitely changed a lot since the fire in the heart of our town but there's still a lot of beauty here and a really strong sense of community. I hope you come back one day and get to see the real Nimbin. ✌

From day one of the Nimbin revival back in the 70's, I wanted visit there to see how things could be done towards self sustaing. After 20 years of waiting, I entered Nimbin from the northern end of town one Saturday morning and saw the drunken youths (first generation hippies) sprawled in the door opening of the pub and on the footpath. Five minutes Ute's later, I exited Nimbin at the south end, realising that the inhabitants there were mainly a bunch of life's losers. The hippy dream had failed.

“The dickheads who don’t know they’re dickheads might be the biggest dickheads of all” 😂 I enjoy the self-reflection, and depreciation. Humility is lost in many vlogs but this is great. I think many small towns and even cities are like this in the states as well. Truth be told, it’s rude to yell at someone you don’t know as they walk away. Some of them have unreasonable expectations in public. Ironic they’re rude to outsiders.

Back in the early 1980's (when I was in my very early 20's years of age) I lived at Tuntable Falls community. (Just outside Nimbin) Most of the people I spent time with were very open and friendly. But .... I also found that a lot where very quick to ostracise you. Simply because you didn't look a certain way or know such and such or weren't interested in becoming a sycophant of some so called spiritual "leader". I found it an incredibly "clique" town in a lot of ways. Even for someone who had been living just up the road a bit, in another country town, since the 1970's.

My kids great grandma used to own half that land ,well clearly the indigenous mob owned it but anyway they used to drive cattle accross that hole area before hippy’s came to town . We lived up top end of Oz in forests & bush near cairns in Goldsboro valley of the grid with my dad & many others moved there building houses on crowned land , my dad used to say up north there of grid after giving away millions his cars trucks houses & yachts he made fron air brush art become famous artist , to get away from Materialist Western society live with nothing ,homeless & free , he used to say that all the mob in the bin & northern rivers & around Byron came from top end when they drove hippies out of QLD . Back in 70 80z that’s what he used to say anyway they all came from the top end . 28 years ago it was a different place . They tried stopping the highway fron being built , they predicted everything that has come to pass, I remember going to a rally when I was visiting from the other side of Australia and they said if the highway gets built easy access from Sydney will drive the prices up drive locals out and take away what it is. People used to be friendly, welcoming,, since that highway was built it is now up in the millions of dollars just buy a shed. It really did destroy the whole area like they predicted it. Would they said the pollution from the semi trailers going down the highway the sound of the 12 wheel trucks will be heard from Bangalow . It’s all happened & come to pass . Never used to be so when I grew up around there, It was always friendly and welcoming. The same thing happened to Karanda up north the markets where a colourful beautiful place now generic tents line the pathways with busloads of Japanese tourists and Australian tourists shops filled with stuffed koalas, and Asian made indigenous artwork . A big fat American man even bought the Corroboree dance troupe in Karanda , those fascination dances have travelled the world dancing, and this American wanted them to change. That dance moves some refused and was fired and left with nothing living in sheds with the seven kids. I remember when I was 15 in Byron and turning around to see my friend and I getting photos taken of us by tourists. I wondered why that was happening until I realised it was the way we looked, with our hair full of feathers, jewellery . you can’t blame people for not wanting to be a tourist attraction and have their photos taken, especially with the epidemic of mental health from the destruction of the region by highways And Creedy investment property buyers industries, there’s a lot of depression and people are just not happy about what’s happened to their communities. They can’t even afford a rental any more and so many have been tripping out.. you can’t expect Community’s to be welcoming and happy under such circumstances While the communities are being stripped and raped by greedy and rich material vampires

I got family in Nimbin and they live about a block from the pub . Nimbin is not what it used to be but hence saying that I will visit for a day. They hate cameras and they also hate city life. The people that live there are very private people that even the polly ain't welcome as they are the most despised people on the planet. Basiclly a step back in time. if you come to town , be nice and don't be a dick or they might chase you out with a stick. There are many places that can be enjoyed in Northern NSW. Try and bring the city life to town and they will tell you to piss off.

You gotta remember where you are bro. No offence. We dont like fucken cameras in our town or being filmed without consent. There are enough cameras on our streetlight poles, we dont want more. People either need to come for the life experience of what nimbin is and take it on for the sake of their personal growth and outlook, or stay away. We are not a freakshow to be documented. This new age of trying to show off and market everything is a massive part of the problem we face in this day and age. Once upon a time, Byron bay was a cheap, quiet, small town too, then it was shown off and marketed. It fucked the place. Dont do it to us too please. Either help protect what we have, or simply leave us alone. Cheers. 🙏

Back in the day Nimbin was the place for alternate living but has slipped away due to the government not wanting this kind of lifestyle catching on . The cost of living has pushed the " hippie culture " further into the background as these days . society says you all need money to exist . The days of old Nimbin are gone now , most of the second generation " the Aquarius kids " did not embrace the lifestyle they grew up in .Nimbin is now mainly full of wannabe blowins who are into their phones and the internet and are more interested in portrayal than being . The introduction of hard drugs and the realisation by the old school that they could no longer exist by just keeping their heads above water has changed the dynamics of the hippie culture in Nimbin . Nice cars , a business and their own house is more the norm these days unfortunately . lf you had filmed 40 years ago it would have been a completely different vibe and story .

I think the title "Don't go to Nimbin" is a bit unfair given the circumstances which you guys have arrived at that point, I know its self referential conisdering that the main understanding here is to not film without consent (especially for a community that's attempted to create an alternative lifestyle and has consistantly come under scrutiny) - you guys were initially treated with respect until pushing that boundary, I feel as though the catchy title (while it did get my attention) is maybe a bit harsh considering. End of the day its always all about enthusiastic consent. Great quality doco - but maybe the title / description can be a little more orientated to the conclusion rather than the initial reaction to not being able to film.

You're absolutely right and it was definitely something I was grappling with when I was making the video. Unfortunately, as I'm sure you're aware KZfaq's algorithm is geared toward catchy titles and graphics and if I ever want my channel to succeed, I have to tow the line. If that weren't the case, I'd have titled it "I went to Nimbin and made a documentary" but that's not what gets people interested. I've always been terrible with titles and thumbnails and this was the best I could think of. Thanks for the comment regardless, and I'm chuffed you enjoyed the vid. I'll take your advice and try to be better with it in the future.

Oh wow! I'm a long time local... On behalf of my community, I almost feel like writing you an apology letter. Btw, Pretty sure I know what was going on for you there... You might even laugh if you knew. I'd explain, but you'd need a local history lesson to understand why we're often a bit camera shy around here. Sadly, not too long ago - you could've rocked up to town, introduced yourself and your intentions and you would have had people lining up to tell you their stories and share some of our history. What a shame we missed our chance this time. Happy travels to you from this nearly normal Nimbinite.

I think this is useful for film students, it highlights the most important aspect of documentary making - access. The more sensitive the topic the harder it is to attain. People take years building relationships and building trust to make real documentaries. Making a film with substance requires more than a facebook message and 4 days. You need to know your subject, research, have a driving question, identify characters and potential storylines, spend time with the subject or in this case the community.. all before turning your camera on. Content for youtube however, well that's made by doing what you did. Still an interesting piece however because you were prepared to be honest and I enjoyed watching your struggle to make the film.

It’s a long story with many moving parts mostly it’s all got to do with greedy investment property buyers, 25. Years ago, the building of the highway was the destruction of the northern Rivers, causing depression and mental health to rise. They tried stopping it & predicted everything that has come to pass. I was living far north Queensland at the time I came down for a funeral or a wedding or a birthday party. I can’t remember and I went to a rally with my mum and everything they said on that stage that night from the rising costs to locals been pushed out the area to the sound of the semi trailers from the highway. You would hear from Bangalow , To the busloads of Japanese and Chinese tourists and the closure of local businesses and family run places, Has all come to pass. I remember vividly one man saying that highway with easy access from Sydney will drive the prices up so high the whole communities will be destroyed.. now houses and Properties/, friends and family bought for 17,000 now worth 7 million. You would think locals would be happy making millions of dollars with a $10,000 property they just bought in the 90s . but you cannot put a price on Freedom & home Community . Now Mental Health has risen. Depression is an epidermic and everyone is struggling just to keep a roof. Or put dinner on the table. So many people have been driven away, locals can’t afford to live in their own hometown any more , it’s happened all around Australia to multiple locations Karanda being a big one in far north Queensland , once a bustling community of laughter and music now Bus, lots of Asians and not a local insight , It’s similar to festivals like Maleny folk festival , When I was a child, at all, those festivals, they were incredible, but once things get too big, the mainstream roll in and strip it and leave the bones , it got too large, so they moved it now it’s called Woodford I have never been because back in 95. All the alcohol drinking main stream flooded the festival, my mum actually just went to a festival at Maleny. All the organisers have gone back Creating their little baby once more, where it was born ,probably from nostalgia. There was only 120 people at the festival and they will probably re-living the early days before it got too big. You can’t expect a place to keep its heart when no one can afford to live there any more . Just look at Byron Bay. The only remaining local shop is legend. Pizzas and Bay kebabs. They all go one by one by high rents. How can you expect a place to stay the same if the people have all gone? . Many still live up in the mountains and bands like a Oka or Wild Marmalade get everyone out of their hiding places. I was in Brunswick heads awhile ago and there were hundreds of people felt like the old days colourful Community you don’t see it any more we all come out of our caves & hiding places to have a dance. And for a few hours felt like it used to feel like before the greedy investment property & the the highways to Sydney were built

Forest is a beautiful loving intellinfent women. Theres a sensativity here that people just dont understand. Its true christ consciousness. What we do to other we do to the self. We feel literally the pain in our bodies. Wrong intentions or seperated thinking in nimbin wont get you far. Your attitude at the end was right. Much love .... but Do come to nimbin ....

I went to Nimben a few times. It's a great place... but not if you film. A lot of people do things that is against the law! They don't want that on camera 🤳. My friend used to live in Nimben in the rainforest. Beautiful house and respect for your privacy 🔏. The police 🚓 is a big problem to. My friend had to leave because of them! Anyway, you are not the only one's who get locked out.
