There are two different ways to knit German short rows and this tutorial explores the differences between the two and when and where to use which version.

Read the full tutorial on my blog: nimble-needles.com/tutorials/...
German short rows are very simple. Basically, it boils down to slipping a stitch purlwise with yarn in front and then pulling (quite strongly) on the working yarn to create a double stitch. Later on, you will decrease the double stitch by knitting it together. So far so good. But when you do this process on the knitside, the result will be a slightly twisted stitch.
To avoid this, you have to slip the stitch knitwise and knit it together through back loop later on. However, while this might create a balanced stitch for the knitside, it might not always be the neatest way.
So, this tutorial explores the differences between the two different ways to knit German short rows and when and how to use them. In the last part, I also show you why and how I knit my German short row heel.

Absolutely the best demo on short rows I’ve ever seen. I’ve been knitting for 53 years, and a few years ago I also adjusted how I do my German short rows to avoid twisted stitches in exactly the same way you have done. I’m an American living in the state of Nevada near Lake Tahoe. Congratulations for having solved a pesky knitting problem and congratulations on making an excellent video!

Well, surely, I am still a beginner, but I was so proud when I finished my first scarf and my first headband. Yes, they are not perfect, I can see the flaws, but it's fine. I realize that great work comes in time, with experience, with lots of practice. So, just thank you, Norman. Vielen Dank! :-)

@@StarfireReborn let me tune in on this and strongly disagree here. I hear this theme so often and it can be very hurtful. Not all brains work the same. Some see the large picture, others focus on the details (especially ppl on the autism spectrum, etc). And for these, these flaws can be a big problem and it's very important to recognize them and not tell them they don't exist or it's fine. It often is not and it's nothing you can (or should) fix with therapy or nice words. I know, you mean well and I thank you for this. But do be careful with that and word in a way it's inclusive.

I found this same thing when I was knitting a cardigan several years ago!! I was doing short rows in pattern, though, so I thought it was just the fact that I was doing seed stitch, and so had purl and knit stitches on both back and front. I ended up purling some stitches through the back loop (tricky but doable), knitting some through the back loop and knitting / purling the normal way some stitches to get them to come out untwisted, depending on what the underlying stitch was (ie. knit or purl). I don't remember pulling stitches to the front, but it all did work out. German short rows were the only short row method I could find that really worked for non-stockinette fabric.

well, i'll see what I can do. But the thing is, and I hope the last section of this video prooved that, it depends a bit on how close you space them. So one method might look nice for a heel but not all that nice for a shawl, etc. So, i'm saying: don't think of it as THE neatest...rather neatest in this case for you :)

11:30 Timestamp for balanced stitches I found that it is more about knits and purls than right or wrong side. I am making a top that has both knits and purls in a row so I had to use both methods on both sides. I found that after turning the work, if the stitch that is to be the double stitch is a knit (on that side), slip knitwise, and if it is purl, slip purlwise. Use the appropriate decrease when resolving them. This is what gave me the best results. Thanks for the video Norman! All of your videos are brilliant but this one especially was so useful and kind of revolutionary to be honest 😂

As you mentioned in the video, this new way to do German short rows will not replace to traditional way, but it t may be useful to solve problems along the way. After all, knitting patterns, yarns and techniques continue to evolve, so depending what we are knitting and what we are using, the technique could be very useful. I will definitely find time to swatch the two options the next time I make a garment that calls for GSRs. Thank you!

happy to hear that. By the way, there is an even more detailed video available on my patreon account. This is not a pitch, just saying if this was something that concerned you for a long time.

Ahhh I just started playing with this with my current socks because the uneven heels were annoying me. I've moved on now but you saved me a lot of time for my next socks! Thanks :D

Have you been knitting German Short Rows wrong all these years? Me, having never knitted GSR as a new knitter: yes

Fascinating and I will have to try German short rows again. I switched to shadow wrap or twin stitches because either side of my heel looks the same with that method and it seemed easier to me. Now I know why the German short rows can look different. Such a simple change to get a neater look. Thanks again for your videos.!

yeah. I mean, give it a try, do it a swatch and maybe you'll find that shadow wrap looks better for you..and maybe it doesn't. I personally like to have options and sometimes I run into an issue and then I can go..okay..wait..let's try this for a second!

@@NimbleNeedles That’s the beauty and the amazing thing about knitting, there are so many different ways that you can achieve the same result. I love how you show the "technical" side so that we can really understand how the yarn creates the stitches. Thanks again!
