Diane Bish plays "Nimrod" from Enigma Variations by Sir Edward Elgar, at the Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas.
Variations on an Original Theme for orchestra ("Enigma"), Op. 36, commonly referred to as the Enigma Variations, is a set of a theme and its fourteen variations written for orchestra by Edward Elgar in 1898--1899. It is Elgar's best-known large-scale composition, for both the music itself and the enigmas behind it. Elgar dedicated the piece to "my friends pictured within", each variation being an affectionate portrayal of one of his circle of close acquaintances.
Variation IX (Adagio) - "Nimrod"
Augustus J. Jaeger was employed as music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. For a long time he was a close friend of Elgar, giving him useful advice, but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Remarkably, Elgar later related on several occasions how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks. The name of the variation refers to Nimrod, an Old Testament patriarch described as "a mighty hunter before the Lord" - the name Jäger being German for hunter.
In 1904 Elgar told Dora Penny ("Dorabella") that this variation is not really a portrait, but "the story of something that happened". As she wrote later in her book; "Once, when Elgar had been very depressed and was about to give it all up and write no more music, Jaeger had visited him and encouraged him to continue composing. He referred to Ludwig van Beethoven, who had a lot of worries, but wrote more and more beautiful music. 'And that is what you must do', Jaeger said and he sang the theme of the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 ' Pathétique '. Elgar disclosed to Dora that the opening bars of "Nimrod" were made to suggest that theme. "Can't you hear it at the beginning? Only a hint, not a quotation".
This variation has become popular in its own right and is sometimes used at funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions. It is always played at the Cenotaph in London on Remembrance Sunday.

I concur with most that this is the most beautiful rendition of Nimrod on youtube. Everything came together: instrument, musician, environment. Audio and video quality are also good. Diane's work is smooth, clean, and unaffected. Only the pure passion of the music comes through. Truly talented people make it look easy. Of course, the music is equally magnificent, passionate, and stirring. Clearly one of my favorites of all time.

Your comments are spot on, and mirror those I might have written. Like the definitive version of Come Sweet Death by Virgil Fox, Diane's version of Nimrod is equally definitive. We are fortunate to have these splendid talents represented by the KZfaq videos for reference, as we can return vicariously to enjoy them with the rest of the world. Bless you. DJ

Ms. Diane Bish was touched by the Holy Spirit to capturing the beauty, grandeur and mysteriousness of this ineffable composition. I have heard very talented young virtuosic organists, but in my humble opinion, Ms. Diane Bish and Mr. Vlademir Horowitz are still unbeatable!

Yes, this is my favorite version of Diane playing this beautiful piece. There are several samples of Ms. Bish playing this version on youtube, however they are all of poor video and audio quality so I ripped then uploaded this version from the DVD that I purchased several years ago. It is still much better on DVD of course, but this is still a decent upload though.

It is very difficult to get the right tempo for this piece as it must be changed for an organ such as this compared to say a massed military band. Some organists play it too slow and it sounds laboured. Diane Bish gets it so right.

Beautiful. Still, I love the Lutheran worship concept as seen in old churches like Bach's St. Thomas Church, Leipzig, of Word (with elevated pulpit) and Sacrament reserved for the front-most magesterial attention, music being ministerial in the back balcony.

This musical piece undoubtedly possesses its own unique allure. However, there are a few areas that might benefit from a touch of finesse for a more harmonious delivery. For instance, it was observed that some notes veered off their designated pitch and rhythm was sometimes interrupted by omitted beats. The tempo was also somewhat disrupted, as a number of pauses or note duration were not extended to their full count. The dynamic range of the piece presented another area for enhancement. Ideally, the composition should commence in a whisper-soft pianissimo, gradually building intensity and concluding in the same delicate manner. However, this progression was somewhat absent. Additionally, there was a missed opportunity for an impactful crescendo to a roaring triple forte near the end of the piece. Comparisons with other renditions available online, particularly on KZfaq, reveal a range of interpretations, some of which might offer a more satisfying listening experience. However, this rendition's uniqueness should not be dismissed outright. With some thoughtful revisions and diligent practice, it has the capacity to reveal its hidden brilliance and captivate listeners.

Being totally honest, despite her brilliance, I don’t like this interpretation. The organ as well sounds as it is has a lot of “tin whistles.” I fully appreciate I’m going to be a minority voice here. Just my opinion.
