As a German I would like to state „What a great man“. After his speech, Germany had lost the war psychologically. Against this man and his followers, no evil had a real chance anymore. And although my country suffered bitterly, I am happy he succeeded in inspiring resistance and triggered confidence in dark times. How good it would be to have politicians like him around nowadays. But wherever you look, especially in Germany, not even lower average quality. Despite the Brexit drama, I like the British and I am happy we have them as friends around in Europe. Cheers.

Lees Friend.... No Dramas. We're leaving the EU only, not Europe. No animosity towards the people of Europe, we're just done with Brussels. Our friendships should go on into the future unchanged. (& we too had great losses in & to our country, you brought us to our knees. It took many decades to rebuild. Did you know if the war hadn't ended when it did we only had six weeks worth of food to feed the nation? It was a very close call & had it gone the other way the world would be looking very different today! Thank god for our strong prime minister, Churchill. Please permit us this decision, this freedom of choice. Looking forward to a new future 🙏).

When the war ended it had the 4th largest air force , the 3rd largest fleet(some sources say 5th) and took part to the a-bomb researches . In 1945 the population was just under 12 millions.

vic smith: How different from Roosevelt who replied to Churchill's early requests `I could never persuade the American people to enter the war on Britain's side' . It took Pearl Harbour and the axis powers declaration of war against America for her eventually to join two years late. Naturally her endeavours thereafter were unstinting and due for our utmost gratitude, at least but for the huge post war debt for armaments provided before their participation, which we continued to pay until 2006 - America never loses sight of its Capitalist principles.

Luister meneer, you do forget it is BRITAIN, not England to whom you refer. Many were Scots, Welsh and Irish. Would you like to be referred to as a Belg? Further, instead of wallowing in sentimental crap why don't we celebrate the help from the Soviet Union, who after all bore the vast brunt of the German war effort and lost over 20 million citizens? Let's get Churchill in context. He was a known warmongerer for empire who was first to use chemical weapons in the world in the middle east, the first to use concentration camps in Zuid Afrika - which should rankle a Dutchman, and was keen on introducing arial bombing of civilian areas.He was loathed at home for using troops to break strikes and detested as a racist bigot. History has already been far to kind to him.

@@arthurschopenhauer2026: And you do forget it's the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland rather than 'Britain'. The Soviet Union only entered the Second World War because it was attacked in June 1941. Until then, the tyrant Stalin had been quite content to remain in the same bed he and Adolf Hitler had been occupying since 1939; and whilst Germany was rampaging throughout parts of Europe, from 1939 Stalin was only too happy to illegally invade, occupy and even annex some of his neighbours (Poland, Latvia, Lithuanua, Estonia, Finland, Romania) and Germany content for that to happen. Even annexed part of Czechoslovakia in 1945. If the Soviet Union had not been invaded in 1941 then Stalin would have been just as happy to sit on the fence and continue to do more unmolested mopping-up of his neighbours and so don't let's have any of this rubbish about the allies couldn't have won the war without the Soviet Union: the Soviets were forced into the war, not having entered it on any high, moral principle. Incidentally, Stalin killed more of his own people during his reign of terror than ever died during the war.
@arthurschopenhauer2026
@arthurschopenhauer2026 5 жыл бұрын
@@anghinetti No doubt Stalin was a monster, but that doesn't change the facts. If the Soviets hadn't entered the war - for whatever reason - there would have been little chance of the UK winning or liberating anyone. Don't forget our great friends the USA were equally happy to sit around until attacked by Japan- hardly a high moral principle either.They were indeed happy to supply Stalin with arms through the lend-lease scheme. We were quite happy to turn a blind eye to Stalin's crimes - so long as he was helping us out. As soon as he was no longer needed he - and the Soviet Union - suddenly became our bitter enemies! One final point. Your ranting about Stalin illegally invading other countries is utterly hypocritical. What on Earth was the beloved British Empire? We could have taught Stalin a thing or two about the rape and pillaging of defenceless nations. Churchill was a main player in that criminal enterprise too. How selective your history seems to be.

When an older person like me reads comments from much younger Brits', comments laced with such cynicism and utter contempt about something they know nothing about, I feel saddened. I was born in the second world war. I remember the ration books, queuing with my mother for two fresh eggs, and two bananas that had come through on the first fruit shipment from the Caribbean at the end of the war. I remember Atlee and Churchill, the Queen's coronation, the coming of black and white television and helping our neighbours grind in the engine valves on their thirty year old bangers (those who were lucky to have a car)while my mates played in the cobbled streets - jam and bread for breakfast, jam and bread for lunch and jam and bread for tea. holidays in Blackpool or Weymouth if you was lucky! I remember cold harsh winters with no coal, my father making a fire out of paper, old shoes and old wood found in woods - just so the family could all have a hot bath. We did not consider ourselves poor - just that there was very little in the shops for the ordinary people to buy! Everyone was in the same boat - that's what made the difference! Street parties were common place. we all felt optimistic for a better future. And, by golly, look what we enjoy today! The standards of living for the ordinary Brits' are a galaxy away from that enjoyed back in the 1950's. The ordinary people of today enjoy a standard of living that even the so called middle and upper classes could only dream of back then. What our parents and grand parents fought for was for freedom and liberty - yes! But, more to the truth, it was for a better world for their grand-children, and their children too! So, that's where we are today! It was Winston Churchill who invited peoples from the colonial countries to come and live in Great Britain, saying that those who had fought for the British cause, no matter from whence they came would be welcome to come and set up a new life on British shores. If Churchill and his contemporaries could come back to see what life was like today - they would shake their heads - amazed on the advances in social welfare, harmony and personal wealth. As a child, through to my mid twenties, my parents lived in rented accommodation, like most people - then, in the social revolution of the 1960's life changed for the better. People were working, on good wages, for the first time in British history the working people had the opportunity to buy their own homes. Sadly, for today's youth, cynicism and lack of understanding what role they should play in society is, perhaps, not their fault - more likely to be too much of a good thing, not knowing what is truly a bad thing - poverty.

I am English and through study understand the context of the speech at the time it was made. I am an emotionally hardened man who spent 32 years in front line policing yet without ant shame I can say it makes me cry like a baby with pride every time I hear this fantastic elderly 65-year-old man speak. He had almost nothing to fight with and Britain was written off by the rest of the world yet with this great man at the helm he inspired the British and commonwealth to chase what was a lost cause and assistance of many other heroic nations especially the Russians together were able to triumph over evil against overwhelming odds and make much of the world free again.

We were once a great nation, proud, resolute, and powerful, we are but a shell of our former selves. Politics, deceit, and lies have belittled us. I was proud to be a soldier with a family history of army service dating back to the Domesday book, Our great and proud heritage is but a shadow, a distant memory, and eloquently expressed by commentator William Rance. This once great nation has been reduced to a cornerstone of history and democracy is just a by-word. I am now in my 70's and greatly saddened by the state of the country and our heritage now becoming less than a memory.

An apt combination: the majestic strength of Elgar's music and the soul-stirring words of Sir Winston. Next month I will visit the grave of my cousin, who was killed on D-Day in Normandy (an 82nd Airborne officer). If the deaths of the millions killed in world conflicts are not to have been in vain, those of us living now must rededicate ourselves to searching for leaders like Churchill, not for petty rabble-rousers with nothing to offer but more ignorance, more money for those who need it least, and yet more wars.

Thank our heavenly father for Sir Winston Churchill, without whom we could be telling a different, terryfying story. We are planning an event for VE Day 75 in Rainworth, and our village and the neighbouring village of Blidworth will be honouring this generation, and celebrating peace on Friday May 8th. He came here to Burnley after the war and was heckled for being a tory (Then), Burnley is a proper working mans town but I'm still ashamed they booed him, and he lost that election, but was priminister again after that.....We wouldn't of got through the war without the great man. The U.K. fought on it's own for over a year before anyone else came to help. Every other country just gave in...... Where you from pal? I'm not assuming your from Liverpool just from the badge??
