What makes NiN for me is that they don't just bang-out some heavy crap, and that's it. Trent usually manages to put these great musical breaks in, unexpected and really effective. It shows that he really knows what he is doing, and is a brilliant musician and composer.

I saw NIN live back in August, 2009 and they performed this song. I hadn't paid attention to it on "The Downward Spiral" up until that point. After seeing it live, it became one of my favorite NIN songs.

Lyrics in this song are incredible, I love it. Also, it is interesting to hear how the ending drums were played live. This requires some skills. I believe CD version of this song involved a drum machine?

This might sound crazy but I think this song may have saved my life. The lyrics struck on such a personal level that they gave me the perspective I needed. About a year ago I felt trapped with a “boyfriend” and I never would have accepted such abuse from anyone else but that was before “all pain disappeared.” I heard this song and lyrics like: “I’m stuck in this dream it’s changing me.” I understood that I was putting up with his excuses and every time I thought things couldn’t possibly get worse they always did because he thought he’d never be accountable. “The me that you know he use to have feelings but the blood has stopped pumping and he is left to decay.” “All pain disappears, it’s the nature of my new circuitry.” “Drowns out all I hear. No escape from this my new consciousness.” “I can try to get away but I’ve strapped myself in.” “It won’t give up it wants me dead and goddamn this noise inside my head.” I realized over a slow process of desensitization I’d lost all perspective. I left, and cut off all contact and my life is much better! Your mind has ways of playing tricks on you when you don’t remember to take a step back and get the bigger picture. If something feels wrong trust your instincts!

one thing about NIN, they do not skimp one iota on sound production. Sound quality for an outdoor concert is out of this world.

wow what an incredible performance. As someone who had their own downward spiral (well a few) this album has always spoken to me, this song in particular. Even when he was an addict Trent's depictions of it were so powerful, it was as if he knew he was experiencing his own destruction and recorded it.

One of the coolest sings ever! Playing guitar or drums on a NIN tour is my dream job. The energy is just intense!!

This song is clearly about Anakin (Annie) Skywalker BECOMING Darth Vader. If only he could have held on a little tighter he wouldn't now be made up of wires. Recently, he's had some second thoughts, and even though the him that you know doesn't come around much, he will eventually beat the machine and toss Palpatine down a reactor shaft, thus finally becoming right with you, despite being so far away.

Trent, thank you for giving us the gift of your music and pouring every ounce of yourself into your performances.

It's about time that I've come back to the music i grew up with. I went through some major depression in my early 20s and NIN was the greatest band I could have ever come across in my darkest time. Since being a Dad I had to put away the dark music to get into Dad mode but just recently I had to flip the switch and remind myself how awesome Trent Reznor is.
