Lyrics:
I wish I knew how it would feel to be free
I wish I could break all the chains holding me
I wish I could say all the things that I should say
Say 'em loud, say 'em clear
For the whole round world to hear
I wish I could share all the love that's in my heart
Remove all the bars that keep us apart
I wish you could know what it means to be me
Then you'd see and agree
That every man should be free
I wish I could give all I'm longing to give
I wish I could live like I'm longing to live
I wish I could do all the things that I can do
Though I'm way overdue, I'd be starting anew
Well, I wish I could be like a bird in the sky
How sweet it would be if I found I could fly
Oh, I'd soar to the sun and look down at the sea
And then I'd sing 'cause I'd know, yeah
Then I'd sing 'cause I'd know, yeah
Then I'd sing 'cause I'd know
I'd know how it feels
I'd know how it feels to be free, yeah, yeah
Oh, I'd know how it feels
Yes, I'd know, I'd know how it feels
How it feels to be free, Lord, Lord, Lord, yeah

I first heard this song about 6 years ago after having my 2nd daughter. I wept. I sung it at the top of my lungs and just bawled my eyes out. Every word pulls at your heart-especially as a woman of color. I didn't know the history behind why this song was written, but I wept. I listened to it over and over again for about 2 months. Who knew that in 1968 when this was written as a tribute to Dr. King's assassination that it would STILL be so relevant today? Let's keep fighting the fight for equality. March. Vote. Protest. Sing. Shout. Cry. Whatever it takes for mankind to reach equality.

Hi Michelle, I'm a pianist too, though not trained at Juilliard, I've memorized the intro to this song. Now we've seen the out of date and shabby results of a stunted, bigoted leader in the Oval Office. Voted for Obama twice, then Hillary, who I told people was a vastly better choice, though I handed out signs and literature for Bernie. Let's pray for the repair of the last four long years of the republican wrecking machine. Do or die

I was a young man at the age of 25 years old, when I first heard this song. It was 1988, and I recall hearing it on a yearly Rev. Dr. MLK & Civil Rights documentary on the radio. I taped the program and I'd listened to the cassette in my newly bought '88 Stang. I did this every year on MLK Day until I passed it down to a younger brother in 2008. I'm 57 and many Blacks in the U.S. are yet to be free. It takes God. John 8:31-32. The answer is in Romans 10:9-10 for all men, especially Black men & women!

In 1974, I had a good friend who was Hendersonville NC’s first black police officer. Bill grew up in Tryon, NC near Nina’s childhood home. I recall a conversation about a black singer he knew from Tryon, Nina Simone. I wish I could have that conversation again and add about a hour to it. Another rare opportunity for a greater education lost.

No matter who you are man, there's something you always feel is chaining you. Everyone wants to break free of something. Sometimes it's poverty, a disability, social class, prejudice, or any number of things. Why this song is so timeless and speaks to so many people. We all have love to give in our hearts waiting for the right person to give it to, wishing we could say all the things that we should say.

Then I watched the documentary about her and it triggered my interest and began to find CD 's at the local library. It was her cover of the Janis Ian songs Stars that really got me hooked. @@jd7089 THIS SONG was about personal freedom of mind and soul, not social injustice. read the comment crybaby. yu know what actually is an injustice? ruining livelihoods, silencing opposition, and pushing people out of public domain on the basis of discrimination. that isn't just color. your heros are violating constitutional rights and the civil rights act. THIS SONG does not represent your political lunacy, and if anything, it objects to it. MLK wouldn't stand behind you radicals and you degrade the legacy of rosa parks. stop condoning violence. they don't deserve impunity. FRUITCAKE.

@@heathermcduffee7058 MLK was not anti-violence, babe. He was a socialist, and socialists believe in revolution.

Was 20 years old, living in abroad in England, on vacation in Jersey in the Channel Islands, heard Nina played on vinyl. No one like her since....saw her live in the 70's when she seemed to be struggling with some kind of addictiion. Onstage confused and incoherent. But her music was and is the most extradinary and moves way beyond the nearly fifty years since I first heard it.

I remember first hearing this song back in junior high school when Dr Billy Taylor and his Quartet played a guest concert there. I’ve never forgotten that song or that gentleman who introduced it to us then, black and white. It’s been running through my mind lately. And I didn’t know until now, that Nina Simone wrote it in memory of Dr King. Still as moving as ever. Rest in peace and power Dr King, Miss Simone, and Dr Taylor. Never forgotten.
