Back in 1978 I was a front desk clerk at what was then Portman Intercontinental London. ( now a Nobu hotel ) . I checked her in. Didnt really know who she was but a few older folk in our team seemed to know. Guess she took a shine to me, as whenever she wanted something, she would be calling for me... " Martyn, Ms Simone, Suite XYZ on the phone for you "... ah those far away days. What a voice , and what style she had. Should have seen her walk.....she was oh soooo coool.

The NETFLIX release "What Happened Miss SImone? exposes many more people to her genius. She couldn't have lived any other life - the demons date back to her parents being told to sit in the back during her recital when she was a young girl. That was her first exposure to discrimination and she saw it everywhere. When the movement gave her voice a meaning and direction she found herself on a journey from which she could never return. Her passion - the reason we loved her was also her un-doing; She told Martin Luther King Jr. she ain't no non-violent person - she was a fighter and fought with her piano keys and voice and then couldn't stop until she left the States.

Originally an African American traditional spiritual track, where the earliest recording was by the Les Baxter Orchestra in 1956, with lead vocals from folk singer Will Holt. Jazz and soul pioneer Nina Simone recorded her own version (which is over 10 minutes long and is Simone’s longest track) on her 1965 album “Pastel Blues”. 0:10 [Story of Song]

This has to be one of thoes songs that are far and few that after having listened to it and understand the meaning of the song it will change your outlook on life not many songs do that, and that has to be the true meaning of music.

Loved this song since she first sang it. Then heard it in "The Thomas Crown Affair" (the newer version). A wonderful song stylist, and a strong voice for equal rights.

carol matthews i love her too, but she did have serious issues. to ignore that is to not accept all who she was. she overcame a lot. there's a new documentary either on hbo or showtime about ms. simone and it opens with her daughter saying that nina was always nina simone not just on stage and that was the problem. that's not to take away from her enormous talent. she wanted to be a classical pianist but the world wasn't ready for a black woman classical pianist. and yes the social times did get to her as well as so many others. that's why she left the country for so long so she could experience a bit of sanity in her life. she is one of my heroes.

George Haddad I can't tell if you were being facetious with that comment. The stats consistently show unfair advantage shown towards white people with respect to pretty much everything from high school admissions to employment. Sure, there aren't any blatant Jim Crow laws denying colored people entrance into a restaurant anymore, and a lot of progress has been made, but it's only about halfway done. Still lots more to do before the USA is truly an egalitarian society.

***** not all the US, and he was talking about Nina simone's reaction, i mean there were black singers there were black singers too at her time....no one had her reaction specially through their music. Geez
