Trent Reznor is the only person on the planet who has written an entire album about BDSM, rape, self-deprecation, and torture that had one of its songs win a grammy, all the while using terminology like "fist fuck", then later win an oscar for the music he made for a kid's movie. I love this man

This was my first exposure to NIN, and this genre of music in particular, way back in 1992, on MTV's Headbanger's Ball. I went a few days later and picked up the Broken EP, and discovered their album Pretty Hate Machine. After loving the Broken EP, the next week I went back and picked up PHM, and loved it, too. Been a fan of theirs ever since, as well as of this genre of music, even now in 2024. I'm about to be 45 years old in a few months, was only 13 freakin' years old when this video/single was released, way back in 1992, which just completely blows my mind when I think about it, and I still love this song, and video, even now in 2024, just as much as I did back then, if not even more so now.

This is THE song that made me a lifelong back NIN fan back in 1992. Then my interests changed and I didn't listen to NIN again until 2014. If I had heard "Wish" I think I would be a very different person now. For better or worse I cannot say.. but music heavily influenced my life back then and I'm certain I'd be a different person. I'm pretty sure I'd be slightly improved somehow =)

Pretty hate machine "mainstreamed" industrial. I still think it's edgy, danceable, but with Reznor's rage, and with lyrics that provoke. Pretty much everything he puts out is great, but his music got rawer and more intense

Ministry started the change with The Land of Rape and Honey in 88, and was full force on A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste in 89. Pretty Hate Machine was also 89, but Broken went full on heavy like Ministry with Broken in 92, same year Ministry's Psalm 69 came out. Ministry set the standards, but NIN continued to converge their two different album styles, and we got The Downward Spiral.

Sleazy from Coil directed this classic. Sleazy was a genius he directed this video and influenxed Trent musically! How to Destroy Angels is a Coil mini album title and Trent named his side project after that.

Today I've decided to tell my embarrassing story, I knew Nine inch Nails after knowing Marilyn Manson when I was a child, and one day I watched this video, then I knew how wrong I was about music. I used to like Manson for his eloquence, interesting lyrics and sticky songs ( his 3 first albums) I already had known NIN, but not in a deep way and this song especially the whole Broken album made me stop listening to MM anymore... 20 years have passed and my respect and love for NIN have never disappeared.

I've just come here after listening to George Michael's Careless Whisper, another great song. But humans have been singing that sort of song forever - songs that sound nice, that sound beautiful, are wonderful. And then there are songs like this... pure anger in musical form, focussed, and yet completely off the leash. Not many artists can come close to this, Slayer have a few gems that manage something similar, some punk stuff, but it's a new phenomenon in the history of music. Pure genius when it's perfected like this.

anger, hate, violence, insanity, harsh noise, dark, metal atmosphere, flashing lights, self-depreciation, self-realization, anti-christian themes, overt sexual themes, public torture, humiliation, themes of social conditioning and personal searches for self, betrayal, crossdressing, black clothes, misanthropy.. & such style. this is one of the coolest things ever for these reasons, and the total antithesis/sacrilege of the christian parent. legendary haha
@tolsen82123 жыл бұрын
Maybe you're reading too much into it. I'm Christian and I was cranking The Downward Spiral after I got baptized. Not saying there aren't anti-religious themes, just that NIN isn't really designed to bait conservative parents. It's too deep. Leave that cheesy stuff to Marilyn Manson.
@somenothing79143 жыл бұрын
@@tolsen8212 right, im not saying he did it to troll conservative christians, but that the aesthetic of this video & the artistic style is so unique, shocking and awesome that it just naturally is counterculture/rebellious, nd just seems almost entirely what a traditionalist christian would rant about (esp in the 80s) when criticizing new music. but uh thats cool dude,, i think u were reading too much into what i said lol.. tho i def think there was a shock/rebellious factor there, that was desired for its viewers

@@somenothing7914 Yeah I get you, it's all good. I agree that Trent always tried to be confronting. Which is a lot different to say Marilyn Manson trying to shock boomers in order to get attention. Trent was always about art and a punk attitude.

You are spot on. Don't get the push back you got- I mean, I do because NIN was popular and attracted a spectrum of people- many who liked the angst but didn't understand what many of the songs were about. Hell- some folks have a weird love for RATM, but- I'll end it there.

When I was 12, I heard the song 'star fuckers' and it was done. I dove head first intentionally downloading every work on Nabster, and saved up the buy every existing NIN album at that point in time. I thought middle school me was 'suffering' enough to relate to these songs on a spiritual level. Fast forward to my 20s, and it was practically an entire decade of trauma, lose, abuse, and subsequent mental illness. I'm still healing from some of the later things. To think, I honestly thought this applied towards being bullied, fighting with parents, and a school principal that could have been featured in a John Hughes movie, he was such a stereotype. I don't know what Trent was experiencing in the 90s, but the pain is so genuine and I appreciate his portrayal of these dark moments. His work from this time period helped me survive. NIN has not put out a bad album, but for me, there is a special sentiment attached to their darkest material. It still helps, when I'm having a hard time with my PTSD and moreover relating to others over it, to just scream 'I hate everyone!' along with the music!
