Ninh Bình is a captivating small city situated in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam, serving as the capital of Ninh Bình Province. This locale spans an area of 48 square kilometers and had a population of approximately 160,166 as of 2014. It is renowned for its rich history, particularly during the Nguyen dynasty when its allegiance was crucial to the French during the Tonkin campaign in August 1884. The city's strategic citadel played a significant role in controlling river traffic to the Gulf of Tonkin.
Geographically, Ninh Bình is nestled in northern Vietnam and is accessible from Hanoi in about 2 hours by coach. The city experiences a humid subtropical climate, characterized by mild winters and hot, humid summers. January is the coldest month, with an average temperature of 16.6°C, while July is the warmest, averaging at 29.2°C.
Historically, the city's citadel was of considerable importance. Despite the Vietnamese authorities in Ninh Bình being known for their hostility towards the French, they did not hinder the passage of an expedition launched by Henri Rivière in March 1883 to capture Nam Định. In November 1883, the French occupied the citadel of Ninh Bình without resistance, establishing a garrison there.
Today, Ninh Bình is a destination known for its stunning landscapes, historical significance, and cultural richness, making it a fascinating place for visitors interested in exploring Vietnam's heritage and natural beauty.
