It's usually a lot of fun, whether you are winning or losing - at the level i play at, anyway. For professional curlers, it's more passion than fun, I think (just my guess). Besides, playing in a mixed league has always been a great way to meet some pretty women :-)

Besides steering, brushing is also done to cause friction to the ice. The brush is slightly abrasive. If swept hard enough, it actually melts the ice and lays a thin layer of water in front of the stone so it goes farther. Indeed the ice is sprayed with water to form pebbles. The pebbles cause less friction between the stone and the ice and therefore it goes farther. The stones are hydrophobic, meaning they don't absorb water, which makes them the prefect choice for curling. Great video! Great sport!

thanks for the video. I've always enjoyed watching curling in the Olympics but I never understood all the different parts of scoring. and I knew it was a sport (some idiots try to claim it's not) but I didn't realize just how much strategy goes into it, either. like the idea of purposely throwing a hammer shot to get it in the next end. thanks again.

Yes, it's mostly people who don't care to spend a bit to understand Curling that says it's not a sport. But once you understand, it's an awesome game! Thanks bro.

There are some sports similar to this one called boccia, lawn bowls and others...... the difference is that they are played with balls (and without the brooms), at lawns, sand or hard floor. Instead of the button you either have a ball that work as the button and that some of the players throw at the start of the round or some ball at an specific position that work as the button (but that can be moved since its a ball and not just some mark).

Great video... for this and for other sports you've done... you've got some excellent ones! You just helped me get a handle on cricket which has confused the life out of me. As for t his one, I've been a curler (spectator and club player) for decades, and was looking for something to send to some new folks... This is a really good primer. However, one minor nitpick... I think you've got the roles backwards for the lead and second. Lead usually puts up the guards and rarely draws into the house unless there's a guard to go behind. Going into the house is death to that rock if you have no guard... because as soon as it's touching the paint, it can be removed. The second tends to play more draws and takeouts, sometimes guards if required. If your lead is not getting guards up right at the start of the end, you're not going to be scoring many points... gotta take advantage of the Free Guard Zone. :) One of the best inventions in curling BTW and probably saved the sport, at least at a professional level. Your third and skip tend to more more a jack of all trades and should be able to handle draws, guards and takeouts.

There are a ton of videos which describe the basic rules of curling but none of which describe the tactics of the game. I do understand that this would be some task because it's a difficult game but nonetheless. Other sports have those sorts of videos, too. But I have to say this video is yet the closest thing to what I need. I'm very interested in the sport and want to understand the tactics of the game.
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 9 жыл бұрын
Hey hemmojito I hear you. But Curling tactics is very difficult to document as tactics vary depending on what shot your opponent just played. You certainly can't learn Curling tactics by watching a 5 minute video - this comes with game day practice. Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
@hemmojito
@hemmojito 9 жыл бұрын
Yes I know, sorry, what I meant was more of the terminology of the tactics that there are. Like for example what is a corner guard? What do you hope to do when you play it.Or just the basic shot options that there are and what they are for. Often I find myself strugging with the terminology when I watch curling. For someone who is fascinated by the sport and really would like to understand it it's difficult. What I get from your answer is you really have to play it to understand it, right? No chance? Maybe a reommendation of some sorts?
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 9 жыл бұрын
hemmojito A corner guard is a rock that is placed short of the house and to either side of the centre-line. This is to get in the way so that an opponent will have a difficult time drawing past it. And no, you don't have to play the game to understand the tactics, but it sure helps. My recommendations? Just keep watching Curling games. I'm sure there's a lot of full games on KZfaq and you'll pick up the terminology very quickly.

@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 6 жыл бұрын
Good question. I've never understood that personally. Ten Pin Bowling is popular enough to warrant it being an Olympic Sport. I have no idea why it's not?!
@krashd
@krashd 6 жыл бұрын
In America bowling has teams where groups of guys own their own balls and towels and gloves and all that stuff and it seems a regular thing for many people, but everywhere in Europe bowling is purely recreational, there are very few leagues or clubs, it's just something you take your kids or a date to and get to wear smelly shoes for an evening having fun. Curling on the other hand has teams and leagues over here. For something to be added to the olympics a certain number of nations have to submit interest and more nations have curling as a competitive sport than bowling. It's probably just down to how easy it is to improvise a game, most cities will have multi-purpose ice rinks while only bigger cities have a bowling alley because they really only get used for bowling.
