Great review, I've been playing Ninja Gaiden 3 recently and I remembered how some people used to say it didnt hold a candle to the original or the sequel. Me and my friends back then got obsessed with it when it came out and thought it was the best of them, but now I think the three games are masterpieces of sidescrolling action

I definitely think it's better than the second game. In the second game you aren't really fighting the enemies as much as you are the environments. While NG3 has this to some extents, it didn't build a whole game around them like NG2 did.

With emulator save states you can obviously get around the limited continues, but for those who want to boot up the OG hardware there is a 99 continue code. You have to let the title screen fade to let the intro begin and then hit START to bring the title screen back. When you get to the 8th title screen (including initial boot up) hold UP+LEFT+A+B+SELECT and then hit START.

This is probably one of the most useful codes in any NES game for sure.

This is my favorite video game series of all time. The original nes ninja gaiden trilogy is fantastic. I wish the rebooted gaiden series kept the same ryu character, suit/mask, irene and the same supernatural otherworldly evil wizard and demon universe formula.

Your reviews are great! I discovered you the other day and have been working through your videos. Ninja Gaiden III is actually my second favorite in the series after the original but it is always nice to hear another person's opinion. We just recently covered the entire classic series as well as the sega versions on our VGM101 podcast as well as a full review of the master system game. Keep up the amazing work dude and congrats on the addition to the family.

Thanks man! Much appreciated. For me personally, I’d have to say the original is my favorite, but really, all the games are great. I’ll have to check out your podcast because to be honest, I don’t really know anything about the SMS Ninja Gaiden game.

For me I think this was the easiest of the series. At least it was the only game I could beat as a kid from the series. And I love this game! Music, story, gameplay. It was all stellar!

The American version ROCKED! I spent HOURS when this was released on the old Wii virtual console trying to beat this stupidly hard game, and it was SO REWARDING TO BEAT IT! I was expecting it to be easier than Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 which I played as a child before the Wii era. But much to my surprise and delight, the game was stupidly unfair and brutal, but the music was great, the controls were great, the graphics in my opinion were the best ever, and the game clearly demonstrated that there was a path to victory if you were patient enough to get better at each stage. This actually ended up being my favorite of the classic trilogy, much to my surprise, similar to how Mega Man 7 completely surprised me with how good it was (and also ridiculously hard) and also became my favorite classic Mega Man game.

Ninja Gaiden 3 got rid of the respawning enemies, but in the later levels the sheer amount of enemies almost makes that a moot point

I don't think US specifically wanted harder games, but I bet the rental stores did for continued income.

This was the only one that did not beat. Those limited continues did it for me. Can't have limited continues on a game like this. Of the original trilogy part 2 is the best one. It's like Alien and Aliens.

I just beat this game for my first time yesterday. I felt like Tom Brady winning the Superbowl when i finally beat it lol. I beat the first two games and the gameboy game without too much trouble but the third game was really difficult with the double damage and lack of continues and you have to master the final act and get through it without taking barely any damage to beat the 3 final bosses on the same life bar. Its nuts but it's my favorite in the trilogy

Awesome video! I'm a new subscriber now. I love all the ninja gaiden games on nes & Gameboy. Ninja gaiden iii on NES is a great game, just too damn hard. I had the pleasure of playing the Japanese version & I love it much more, I beat that one. Ninja Ryukenden III

I was okay with NG3's continue system because the levels and bosses felt less cheap than the other games. My personal ranking, from best to worst: NG2, NG3, NG1. NG 1 was the most obnoxious in game design. I never did beat the final boss, even with infinite continues.

Great looking nes game. Too bad its so expensive. I actually got a copy for 57$ but it wasn't in the best condition. Well everything that mattered was still there. The case looked nice enough except the top which a the left side a a little bent upward. And the picture while not the best you can still see just fine.

I always that 3 was the easiest because of how slow it was and the lack of respawns. Ng1 used to kick my ass, especially 6-2

While 1 and 2 are hard they were kinda like super meat boy: the checkpoints were so generous, even after game overs, that you'd basically play the same sections over and over till you mastered them. 3 changed this for the worst. I don't mind them making it hard but the key is balance, which 3 doesn't have. Damage output is so high, enemies come in unrealistic droves, limited continues are garbage. The Japanese version was way too easy and I appreciate them making the US version harder but they went way too far. It's still a great game and beatable but less enjoyable due to their design decisions

Definitely agree...play the Japanese version. The American version is unnecessarily cheap in difficulty. I like a challenge, but this is just annoying. The Japanese version is reasonably priced, and a bit of a joy to play through.

From a storyline perspective I'm wondering where that demon's origin is from, the one defeated by both Shinobi and Ryu. Was it a bionoid created by this "ancient ship of doom"? I personally don't think so, as Shinobi only housed the body there after the fact. Admittedly I never played the video game that Shinobi fought the demon in.
