From my understanding, there was no pre-existing manga for the series so I'm guessing that the source material came from something like notes. Ninja Kamui was a project from a brand new animation studio created by the legendary Seong-hu Park. He animated the majority of the action sequences and was responsible for the amazing choreography in the first few episodes. Unfortunately, his new studio lacked the man power necessary to complete and polish a project like this within the given time frame so some shortcuts had to be taken (CGI mech suits). To make matters worse, Park was definitely suffering from burnout after animating so many sequences by himself which could also explain the dip in art and animation quality in later episodes.

Soon as the mechs and episodes 6 hit it went down hill tremendously

the midway point of this anime threw me for a fkn loop man, you perfectly summarised exactly how i feel about ninja kamui. definetly less interesting/engaging after the mech was introduced. keep up the good work man :)

As soon as the suits came in my interest dropped, thinking back to the first teaser trailer I don't think they delivered on the promise that was seen back then.
