Lovely paint job Jon, I love seeing how your style has developed while remaning distinctly you. I also agree about layering -- you can develop into a really good painter by getting to grips with layering and glazing IMHO. Anything else is just a bonus.

Maybe this helps others too but what I really like doing is photography. I merged this with my miniature painting hobby by photographing interesting references all around. What I find particularly resourceful are brass / aluminium / whatever statues and how they corrode. I also like photographing manhole covers - they do show a lot of nice references for basing, for weapon painting effects, how paint chips on metal surfaces, etc. It helps a ton with paintjobs :D

I always love how these kinds of pant jobs look but when I try to do it myself my brain just doesn't like it, even when I was a kid and I tried to draw a cartoon I would have issues because I would slowly add so many details that it ceased being cartoon like.

This idea is something I've been trying to work on myself. I don't remember who it was (I think Scott, but I'm honestly not positive) who said they like to take pictures of graffiti and street art to get inspiration on colors or vibes and I thought it was super cool. The difficulty for me comes from looking through art that I love that fits the idea in my head, scrolling to the next picture, and seeing a different one that's also great. I end up making no progress and continuing to scroll. I've actually been thinking of picking something like 6 pictures, rolling a dice, and simply using the picture indicated.

Quick question for you. Something I did by accident but has been quite instructional. I have a Death Guard army that I am slowly adding to with painted models. By comparison with what is on the web I have gone for a very dark aesthetic and the figures are 80% contrast but with heavy coatings. Anyway, the completed models have been sitting on my games table in the lounge room and catch the light through the full range of the day. I have noticed what is a dark colour scheme, primarily a green & black contrast, a gold/brass mixture for the trim and an agrax shade, becomes very reflective in low light the the green blistering out in twilight with a knife edge shadow for the side in shade to the point of inky blackness. When in the morning the colours sort of glow but the shade defines the contours of the bodies really well. At mid day they have that dark aesthetic that I expected. Have you ever observed your finished paint jobs in an ever changing range of natural light. It is really quite illuminating. (Sorry)
