The thing is in the handheld market, Nintendo didn't have competition or the PSP didn't have third party support at least. But to be fair, is the steam deck or rog competitors to the Switch? The Switch is hybrid and have local multiplayer, about half Switch users are using it deck mode.

I think we should also point out that Nintendo Switch forcibly merged their mobile console sales with their home consoles. Nintendo's mobile sales have nearly always been higher than their mainline systems. Honestly the Switch made their revenue streams less protected as before if one system did poor the other would still prop them up. The Gameboy, Gameboy Advanced, DS, and 3DS were all massively successful. It shouldn't be that surprising then that the Switch basically took both those markets in one.

@chrisbrowne5829 you're joking right? Sony's earnings from gaming last year were ten times either Microsoft or Nintendo. I don't like Sony's game design anymore, but you'd have to be blind to think they're going bust. Nintendo has a far less lucrative market than Sony and Microsoft have continued to use Xbox exclusively as a loss leader. Honestly Nintendo is by far the most likely to fail as they don't even have any external markets to profit off when they flop. At least before Nintendo had handheld to backup on, now they're both in one. And the future of consoles is already dead. Microsoft and Sony have already accepted that the console model is dying, the best business venture is just having your games everywhere people can play them. It's why both Microsoft and Sony put games on PC, why both have mobile streaming, and some games even come to Switch. The console model just isn't as profitable as just getting all the people you can to buy your games. This path is already obvious and Sony even acknowledged games like Ratchet and Clank didn't even profit till it came to external platforms. I mean we're even now entering the AR era where people have a display on their face all the time. What point is there in dedicated mobile screens when we have that? What makes more sense making specialized hardware with games only on it, or just making your games work on people's phones and Vision Pro? I think the answer is obvious and with the new iPhone even running modern Resident Evil, why waste the RND. There's more to making a profit than selling each console at a profit, it still needs to make up the RND.

And third parties have been fully supporting Nintendo for several years now, this last part isnt going to change.

There's something the Switch has that other handhelds lack, simplicity for the average person and kids. The quirks of handhelds are not a big deal for PC gamers or tech enthusiasts, but they can pose issues for those not in that space. Also, Nintendo puts out more first party games than other platforms. It has slowed down to remasters/remakes in the final chapter in the Switch's life, but one could be fully entertained solely on new first party games. I do agree that Nintendo's archaic approach to online features needs major addressing. Also, I think their game prices are out of hand, but that's becoming more of a thing industry wide.

So face the truth, Switch lite belongs to the Switch family, and Switch is a hybrid CONSOLE, repeat after me: Switch, PS5 and Xbox series X/S are all CONSOLES. And even if you take away Switch lite sales, Switch sits around 116 million units, so what does it matter? lol

The difference is that the Switch 2 will be able to play all the games the steam deck can while the same is not true for the steam deck. It boils down to games. Nintendo is the only game company that’s still innovating. The entire rest of the gaming landscape is becoming stale and you can see it with the PS5 and XBOX series consoles having absolutely zero must play games. It’s no secret why the Switch sold so well. It was banger after banger first party game not third party games.

Looking back on history isn’t Apple to oranges tho. Today’s engines are designed to run on just about anything. Even if they were slightly underpowered to the competition, games should run on the systems unless devs want to pretend like they don’t know how to code again (see beginning of switch’s life)

The Nintendo Switch is so successful due to various factors. Firstly, of course, there is the innovative approach with the hybrid concept. Due to the flop of the WiiU, they were then able to re-release numerous good games, in particular Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. In addition, the Nintendo Switch - like most Nintendo consoles in the past - has the best range of first-party games. And finally, it also has a solid number of third-party titles. With a more powerful version, the first two points would obviously no longer apply. This means that if you want to have the same success, you would have to compensate for this with even better support from third-party manufacturers. This has indeed often been the problem in the past. Games such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Elden Ring or Resident Evil 4 Remake - or GTA VI in the future, for example - would therefore also have to be released on the new Switch.

Nintendo stands at a pivotal juncture in the gaming industry, where it should consider the looming competition from emerging portable gaming PCs and potential releases like the rumoured PSP2. With Xbox also contemplating entry into the portable gaming market, the landscape is evolving rapidly. Leveraging their financial prowess amassed from the remarkable sales of the Switch, Nintendo has a golden opportunity to assert dominance once again, should they choose to seize it. Embracing a return to the power narrative and expanding the Joy-Cons to accommodate an 8-inch display, while integrating a dock serving as an external GPU, could propel the Switch into uncharted territory, should Nintendo decide to take this strategic move. Such a decision wouldn't just potentially push graphical performance to rival, or even outstrip, that of traditional consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X; it could also pave the way for ground-breaking consumer products. With an envisioned GPU performance rating of 3.5 teraflops in portable mode and a staggering 14 teraflops when docked, the next iteration of the Switch could redefine industry standards, should Nintendo choose to pursue this path. Moreover, by embracing innovative technologies such as DLSS and Deep Sampling, Nintendo could potentially unlock the full potential of the Switch, offering gamers unparalleled visual experiences. However, Nintendo's innovation doesn't stop there, but it could, should they decide to further explore it. The concept of transforming the Switch into a VR headset equipped with a 4K screen and compatible accessories akin to established VR platforms like Galaxy Gear VR or Google Daydream could be nothing short of visionary, should Nintendo decide to undertake it. Not only would this potential evolution elevate the Switch's capabilities, but it could also open new horizons for immersive gaming beyond the confines of traditional TV play. In essence, Nintendo's potential next move isn't just about releasing another gaming handheld; it's about potentially ushering in a new era of gaming experiences that are not only immersive but also future-proof. By marrying cutting-edge technology with consumer demand, Nintendo could have the potential to solidify its position as an industry leader and potentially redefine the very notion of portable gaming.
