Nintendo DSi XL Broken Screen Replacement

Here I show how to replace both broken lcd screens, top screen and the bottom screen on the Nintendo DSi XL. It's quite tricky because a lot of the things inside the DSi are delicate and easy to break.
But if you go slow and are thorough, maybe you can do it yourself.

Unfortunately as a kid, I dropped my ds xl and half of the top screen is all blacked out. Now that I’m older, I want to try and get it repaired, but I know I could never do whatever the hell you just did in this video, and my ds has a custom skin I put on it as a kid, so taking off any plate on the inside of the console would be a no go for me.

at first i thought i bought the wrong screen... then i realized i got the right one but i wasn't fully prepared since i don't have a soldering iron nice video though! short and simple

@@goldhagengaming thank you, im waiting for my soldiering iron, i wished though the buttom screen was the faulty one 😆 it's cheaper and easier to replace

Mine just have air bubbles mostly on the top but otherwise, it’s been fine (have had it for 10-12+ years so far) I’m just hoping those air bubbles aren’t a sign of my screen going bad… And I’ll be honest, but I’d never be able to replace it the way you’re doing it by hand. Do you know any places that could for whatever reason if possible? (Like stores or other places that know about doing things like this)

Back again! I got my charger and it was like i remembered no other issues than my black top screen can't see anything. The rest works alright

Then I guess your only option is to try and replace the top screen with a new one. Best of luck! :)

I got a DSiXL second hand and I thought the screens were starting to die because the corners show very slightly brown when they're supposed to be white. But the effect is the same on both screens and pretty hard to notice. In your video footage, it almost looks like your new screens have the same thing going on. Is that just how the DSiXL normally is? Or are mine starting to die?

My dsi xl isn't working. The last thing I remembered was bottom parts is just fine but the top part is the problem. It's just a blank screen. I bought a charger on Amazon I have to wait and see if that's still an issue. Also very lovely dsixl color!!

I bought my replacement screens from eBay. Just look for a popular seller with good reviews and you should be fine :)

Hi, I recently broke my dsi xl’s top screen and was looking for a replacement but I am afraid that the screen’s quality is going to be inferior to the bottom one as every dsi xl has ips screens. Could you tell me if the replacement screens are ips? ( whether or not the colors change based on the angle you’re viewing the screen) take care!

There is no visible difference between my DSi with aftermarket screens and my original DSi. Just check that the replacement screen has got some good reviews before buying :)

Hello! Can you do a tutorial for the same exact nintendo but about how to fix the thingy where you put the games cards? I have the 25th anniversary red nintendo dsi xl but it won’t read the game cards idk why, and idk how to fix it or where to go to get it fixed):

Use isopropil alcohol. Soak a cotton bud and use a cartridge. Soak the contacts of the game cartridge with ipa and put the game in the slot and take it out repeatedly.. repeating a couple of times should do it

Hello my dsixl was broken in half by the hinge and all ribbons torn by my son but I dont have a soldering iron or any skills with one anyway but I might have another broken dsi xl with the top working, could I canabalise that using the screen an speakers already soldered?

Hi! Well, that depends. If it was broken in half the hinges could be damaged at the bottom half as well. But if the only problem is the ribbon cables you should be fine. Good luck!

Just the screen. Replace bottom half and you’re good to go

My DSI has multi colored lines going up and down on my screen.

It could be a number of things. It's most likely that the screen is partially broken or that the ribbon cable is damaged, or that the connection for the ribbon cable has become slighty loose.

Unfortunately i failed @ 8:00 I broke the screen ribbon cable when i was trying put through the hole... DS isn't easy to deal with, that thought soldering would be difficult but these ribbon cables...

Same, screw those ribbon cables. Aftermarket screens should make them detachable from the screen, so then if you break the ribbon cable the whole screen isn't a waste

@@shanez1215 ohhh consider it a lesson I'm doing much better now I managed to replace Few 3DS and 1 3ds xl and also new 2ds xl, i usually watch videos before star working on them but i friend gave me first gen ds and i did replace to the top frame without cheating! It gets easier as you spend more time repairing these I made some mistakes though along the way but i keep getting better

Hi man, my dsixl starts up then the bottom screen flashes and it turns off again, you know what it is? I have a bottom and top screen ready to go in but if i can save some time that would be awesome. I never replased a screen tho.

Hi Crash! Does the DSi turn off or just the bottom screen? Does the upper screen still work?

@@goldhagengaming upper screen doesn’t turn on at all, bottom screen flashes white then turns off again.

@@CrashBlasters Then I don’t think it’s related to the screens at all. It could be as simple as the battery being to old, I would start with replacing the battery. If that doesn’t work it could be the fuse, but that will require some soldering skills.

@@goldhagengaming you sure? The battery holds charge fine. It’s a few years old obviously but still does the job. The dsi had been laying in my closet for a few years. I tried turning it on last week and this happened. Would it make sense to even replace any of the screens? I read an article online about someone that had the exact problem as me and a official nintendo engineer said it was the screen so i ordered both just to be sure.

Hm, nope, then it’s probably not the battery or the fuse. Has the DSi been stored in a dry place? I’m thinking it could be water damaged. The other option is that something is causing a short somewhere, could be a broken cable or that one of the screens is shorting something. If you have both top and bottom screen I suggest you go ahead and replace them, and the ribbon cables for the screens and hope that does the trick :) But before replacing the screens check the water-damage-sticker-thingy so that the machine hasn’t been water damaged.

I have a dsi xl that I bought online and there are white spots underneath the touchscreen display. Do you know what the problem may be

Does it work or is it broken? Are the white spots between the touchscreen and the display or on the actual display?

I think it’s between because it’s more visible at certain areas. It does still work but it bothers me

@@keithkeith8425 Hm, could be anything really. Could be moisture that has dried. If it bothers you, you can always open up the console and clean the screen :)

I tried to fix it but I couldn’t manage to do it. I also tried to find any local shops to see if they could fix it but they said they do not work on dsi xls.
