Nintendo land: an underrated party game masterpiece

IGN used to have good reviews. But they're becoming worse and worse. "Too much water", "too many HMs", "Grandma won't get it". Common, guys. More professionalism!

If grandma doesn't get this, how does GTA5 have a 10/10 then?

Review was fake, I played Nintendo Land in stuff like Mario Chase with my Grandama and she 'got it''. 10/10 game, grandma does get it.

Just when you think IGN can not be more IGNorant, a negative point is "grandma won´t get it", well you could say that for the 99% of the games out there.

Because EVERYONE wants to show their games to their grandmas.

"Grandma wont get in" was one of the negative points that wasnt listed in the GTA V review. Thanks TGN for kept back that information, would never bought GTA V with that information.

I'm around 10 hours in as far as solo play is concerned, and I still have loads to do, feels like I've barely scratched the surface! The great thing about the mini games is they're all accessible and easy to get into in the early levels, yet they all include plenty of depth, and get much much harder the further you get. I have to say I'm surprised how good this game is, I was expecting a bit of fun and minimal content! This is so much more! Hope you enjoy it as much as me.

I love this game. Great for parties. The missions on Metroid Blast and Pikmin are pretty difficult when you get to the extra missions too. Plenty of fun and never gets old.

Nintendoland is SO MUCH FUN IN MULTIPLAYER. I played it at New York Comic Con with people I've never even met and had a fantastic time.

I love how when other companies copy good ideas Nintendo has it's "unoriginal" "ripping off", but when Nintendo rips off the ipad, it's "innovative" and "original".

wow at the beginning, seeing the graphical upgrades from the wii to the wii u really puts into perspective how much gaming has evolved

i play this game with a friend n it's is fun but found out u can't play with ppl online, i most say that pretty much put me off and i love the game but would love to play with ppl online.

One of the selling points of Dead Space 2 was specifically "Grandmas don't get it." Guess that must've hurt that game's score quite a bit

I was "eh" about this game before launch but after playing it with a few friends I am absolutely loving it, it fun as hell and surprisingly has a lot of depth and things to sink your teeth into and not be turned off by a bad taste.....and them graphics doood. Them graphics are awesome!!

The 'Grandma part' is actually a fair point. With the Wii, Wii Sports was perfect for new gamers as it wasn't a 'traditional' game. With the media naysaying the video games industry and saying it causes violence and crime, Wii Sports was the perfect game to introduce people to gaming. When you swung the Wii remote, it became a golf club/boxing glove. This 'hardcore' approach may deter older gamers and with the 'hardcore' market turning up their noses, Nintendo Land can't do what Wii Sports did.

I don't own a wii u (yet), but I've played it at a friend's house and this game is highly addictive. It's not just an introduction of the wii u features and everything, this game can really stand on it's own.

I have. I'm 27 and they're all in their mid 20's. The game is incredible. I got my roommate's sister (who's in her 30's and doesn't play games at all) to try it with us last night. We ended up playing for a couple hours and she loved it, she even trash talked a bit. :P In fact, a friend of mine called me and asked if he could come over and play it. It, like most Nintendo games appeals to kids but isn't made exclusively for them. It's like Disney kinda.

Nintendo land's visuals are amazing... Can't wait to see how good Nintendo's exclusives will look.

lol, I am just getting into the wii u as the nintendo switch is coming out. I think it had a bad start, but overall, wii u is a superb polish version of the wii, both in games and in gameplay ( except for skyward sword, which.... is bad, my opinion guys)

Forgot to mention that Mother 1 released in 1989. F-Zero released in 1990. Mother has 3 games. F zero has 10. It's time for Nintendo to turn to the hardcore fans.

I think "Grandma won't get it" is supposed to mean that it's not as intuitive as Wii Sports was with the shaking thing. Still not a valid point to deny a decent 9.0

I don't think it was that alone. What they were saying was that it's not as universal and revolutionary as the Wii was, it's not something that someone as simple minded as a grandma could pick up and instantly and understand. It was marked down for the lack of universal simplicity :)

Because buttons are hard for older people to understand. With the Wii, all you had to do was swing the Wiimote around.

A tablet is a surface where you can interact with the objects on the surface. Gameboy isn't a tablet. But Wii U is. Back in the prehistoric era, people used stone instead of paper as a tablet. That's how the name tablet got its electrical definition. I guess technically anything with a screen can be defined as a tablet, cuz you are interacting with things on screen.

Consider that this is the spiritual successor to Wii Sports which was very popular with grandma. Yes, she deserves consideration in the review.

She's basically saying that it doesn't have mass appeal which is a valid complaint as Nintendo Land is basically the Wii U equivalent of Wii Sports.

But you're forgetting the 360 was leaps and bounds more powerful than the xbox and ps2, while the wii u is only a little bit more powerful than the current gen consoles. Which i might add ARE SEVEN YEARS OLD!!

What if... this was the plan? The Wii gets Grandma (and Grandpa and Mom and Dad and Cousin Louie) playing simple motion games and the WiiU gets them into a little more traditional of gaming, eventually turning them from casual gamers into simply gamers?

You misunderstand. It's a nintendo pack in, which is usually supposed to be something the entire family can play. But the this one is a little aimed at nintendo-fans so it's basically saying, it won't be wii sports.

I think haters of Nintendo have to remember is that the best reviewed games of all time for games in general have been produced by Nintendo... Zelda Oracle of Time, and the two Super Mario Galaxy games... as voted by both industry experts and gamers alike

And from day one of the Wii, my thought was that if someone is only interested in a game console because of something like Wii Sports, they don't deserve to play it. Those kinds of people are what caused the Wii's game market to be polluted with nothing by no-good generic stuff, and that benefited no one.

The wii THIRD party games might not sell well, but for ALL nintendo related stuff, A LOT of their games sold 15m+, not too mention that 95% of their games on the wii/ds were in the millions. The reason that their stocks decreased was because they happened to have 2 of their consoles (handheld, the ds and their homeconsole, the wii) that were both at the END of their lifespan.

Well a lot of what sold the Wii was that its fanbase included everyone and anyone that wasn't a hardcore gamer, which is the majority. This is still trying to do that but it isn't as family friendly as its predecessor. BO2 and Halo 4 are not family friendly and they are not meant to be.

That's one of the points of games like this, so "grandma will get it". I find many games like New Super Mario Bros. Wii end up falling in that awkward ass crack of hardcore/casual players. To the point where grandma doesn't get it, meanwhile it's still fun for non-casual players, but the overall challenge is still lightened due to it's intention of having grandma get it.

yep. all attractions can be played on you own. like she said, 9 are made for you alone and the other 6 on multiplayer but that doesnt mean you still cant go it alone

When I saw this at E3, I thought it looked awful. Now I am in awe with it! The E3 presentation didn't do this game justice. They showed the wrong mini game and didn't make it exciting. Plus the advertising for Wii U in the UK is atrocious (if there at all). It looks like a great console but Nintendo need to work on their advertising and convincing people it's a must-buy.

surprising. i didnt expect a pack in tite to be this polished. the graphics in the plaza are quite crisp despite the amount of activity. imagine how a 3D super mario game will look

Aren't they comparing this to just Wii Sports as a intro to a new console, though? Obviously when someone gets a Wii with Wii Sports, the game is easy to pick up; when someone gets a Wii U with Nintendo Land, however, a lot of people that are new to gaming will have a hard time understanding some of the minigames that require you to use the controls a lot.

And what do we know about WiiU's hardware specifically? We know it has a GPGPU, but it's only rumored to be in the range of OpenGL 3.3. It has 2 Gigs of RAM, with 1 Gig for games (but hey, not all 512MBs of the 360's RAM are for games either), but we don't know the RAM type. We know next to nothing is known about the CPU, no clock speeds, no buses, no architecture. Only that it's Rumored to be 3 broadway cores (BTW: Xenon is only 15% better real-time than Broadway).

This looks about a billion times better than I thought it did... Dang it, now I want a wii U.

It is a big deal and a good point to make that "grandmas wont get it". The reason is not that the game is family or kid oriented, it's because it COMES with the console. A game like that should be very widely accessible to all audiences, as it is largely a tech demo showing what the console can do while showcasing some of the hit nintendo series. It is important to judge a game based on its intentions, and they cannot all be judged the same way, so your BO2 and Halo 4 argument is completely moot

No, but lots of people have grandmas from "the old country" who do things the old fashioned way, so remotes are super advanced tech for them.

Why is everyone getting upset over the grandma thing. This game is meant to introduce the game to everyone, including your grandma. Stuff like halo and gears of war don't get marked down for this because they aren't meant for everyone, so it's not a problem.

While I don't agree with the previous rager's way of putting it, I agree that it isn't really a necessity in this case. I feel that a lot of what makes the modes fun would be drastically diminished if it went online. That's not necessarily a strong argument against it, but I feel like this wasn't designed to be played online in the first place. I've loved playing the games with friends around, and half of what makes it fun is being around people I know laughing along. Online isn't required imo.

Their thinking outside the box, with the Wii U, you can turn your tv on your show and still play a game using that pad. Also allows much more gaming plans for the future. Also, Square Enix said they will never remake FF7, X however I haven't heard, would be nice. So far this system is looking sleek and very nice, the price range isn't too bad either.

This is insane. If this is Wii U graphics now, then 3 years from now will be incredible.

This is a pack-in game with the Premium Pack (Deluxe Set). This may be a fault of the console itself but when a kid gets a console at Christmas, he/she usually wants the family to play with them. I think the point made was that most of the older generation (that I know of) are reasonably technophobic. This may be less appealing than Wii Sports as it's not as easy a concept to grasp. Even the subject matter- Fantasy, Sci-Fi and whatever Mario is aren't the genres that appeal to older people.
