OK, this is really cool. My question is, are the ROMs that this unit would play archived? It would be very interesting to see what kind of demos you would get from something like this at a McDonald’s.

It would've used DS Download Station carts, and yes, those are probably dumped. In fact, if you have an R4 or a modded DSi or 3DS, you can use one of those roms to allow it to act like one of those.

These were one of those lucky few moments when hanging out back then at a target and seeing the promotions stickers telling you to be able to download free demos

No interaction is needed for its intended use (just stay on to broadcast content wirelessly), so no buttons needed :P

We had a demo ds at gamestop when I worked there. But it was just a modified original model. It's how we used to give kids the special Pokémon of the month etc. Cool stuff. I wish more ... personal little features like this and streetpass were still around, and furthermore, more viable in the US.

I wonder if they used that as the hotspot for the special pokemon distribution, after all it fit thr description, a Nintendo DS with a special Pokemon card hidden in the store to make a hotspot

The problem with that full video is that the thumbnail has it playing NSMB2, which is a 3DS game and not compatible with this unit.

DS Download Play was a feature on all DS consoles. It has nothing to do with that prototype.
