Yesterday it was discovered that Nintendo is suing the popular Switch Emulator Yuzu and attempting to shut it down after what happened with Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. Sony announced major layoffs, canceled games and even a studio closure continuing the unfortunate trend in 2024.

Remember "Survivorship Bias". People don't look at the failure rate of something, they look at the SUCCESS rate of it. How many stories of, say, successful startups do you know? After that ask how many startups fail?

As the industry moves to fully digital games. This will keep on happening. I would say the Switch 2 is going to be fully digital with a system in place to bring your physical Switch games over. Its why they are going after Yuzu now. As you might be able to import games you don't own over to the Switch 2 with the methods Yuzu uses. Also why they arent going after the other Swtich emulators. As they are more pure emulation. Which Nintendo would have to fight in the big boy court room against thousands of people.

It will continue to work on Blu-ray movies released up to the new encryption key is released, the day Sony stops updating their Blu-ray players, they probably won’t update the encryption key too. But it’s Sony, they are unpredictable. To be clear all movies that has workers on a Blu-ray player will not stop working.

The creative side doesn't decide what games are made, how they're made, etc., but the business end who only cares about quick cash has far too much control. This is the same with the movie and music industries. The entire entertainment industry is at a crash. But, the game industry has it the worst... by far with talent leaving the industry en masse, and people who want into the industry either changing careers outright or being denied outright despite having perfect portfolios. Anyone denying the fact that the gaming industry is crashing is ignorant, unwilling to accept reality, or acting in bad faith.

No Sony, bigger and "prettier" does not equal to fun and timeless. I never get bored of playing Tetris, The house of the dead 2, Megaman X or Mario 3 for example, but ask me how many times I have played Horizon 2 or TLOU2 after finishing it.

Nintendo doesn't have a claim here because Nintendo charges you 60 dollars a year to emulate games and one of those emulator are not the property of Nintendo one of them is in fact the property of Sega roms which in fact Sega reserve the right to there ips so by going after a switch emulator itself is by far illegally because of stuff around the emulator itself isn't right and if a judge sides with Nintendo they will also have to eliminate there Sega emulator that they charge for use and fine Nintendo for damage to segas IP and make Nintendo also I am not surprised that the people who make these emulators don't sue these companies that make people pay 60 dollars a year to use their emulators on what is open source

I wish big developers would be ok with creating $30-$40 games. Not everything has to be AAA. A simple $30 twisted metal game would be awesome. The only downside for them (looking at Nintendo) would be if they ever wanted to charge $60/$70 for a $40 game, we would immediately call them out on it.

Yeah, the reason the industry didn't outright crash is the fact the rest of the world do offer smaller budget games, and sometimes of good to great quality even. The rise of indie game basically taking over the market, which the bigger publishers tends to ignore from time to time, also had a major factor of its survival.

I think Yuzu shouldn't be allowed rightnow. I love emulators I use PPSSPP. But, its not fair to create emulators for an active console that is still very accessible. When it comes to something like the PS1 or 2, the DS and other old consoles and games that aren't available on the market now or very rare, I think thats when emulation should be allowed.

@@jcdenton4110 "or very rare" Here in my country, you either buy from used market like ebay or ask your relatives if they have the old consoles. And you mentioned ebay. That's not directly from the manufacturers (assuming its second hand), its from the previous owners. You buy from ebay, Sony or Nintendo won't get anything from it. - I support emulators because they make old consoles and games that are not available on official stores accessible. If you emulate it, it won't affect the company. - I don't support emulating active consoles because it will affect the official sales of the games/consoles.

It's weird that they're only doing this now even though yuzu started development like 10 months after the Switch came out. Also yuzu doesn't provide you the keys or any roms, you have to provide them yourself through legal means, so going after them for that seems a little strange

Then, in spite of saying the medical data they wheedled out of you is secure and private, they sell it to social media companies, who then sell it to everyone else.

Really awful service which is a shame.

I wonder if Switch 2 backwards compatibility is based on the architecture being similar enough to OG switch. That it would make updating Yuzu to support emulation of Switch 2 very easy, so this is their way of getting ahead of that problem.

Though out the lifetime of earth there have been massive changes…. Just recently companies that was once here and massive cease to exist….. heck two years ago I was 290 pounds unhealthy and sick but now at Age 44 I’m 182 pounds 5 foot 11 and the fittest I’ve ever been and I consider myself at best just average……I say all this because most folks and businesses can overcome and adapt. SO many great stories of businesses and common folk overcoming so the end of existence will at least get some pushback…. History shows this. 😊

I think this is a wee bit exaggerated @Defur45. Take a moment to slow down, get some sunshine, and UNPLUG.... that should fix some perspective disconnect going on. Talk to real people outside of the city hussle and bussle and see that many are thriving outside the bubble of media everywhere all the time. We will overcome the storms in life. Also.... a lot of these businesses were being icarus and flew too close to the sun or extended themselves at a poor time in economic history. They went after trends, pushed their companies for too much year over year profits over long term sustainability with small growth in mind, and took on too many debts most likely which makes places fall down. This model couldn't last forever and the 10 year economic cycle was overdue to shift downwards. The pandemic kicked that can down the road and exstribated it which is why everything is super wonka doodle-do right now. Companies taking on more than they should and not focusing on preserving the life boats on board for emergencies. Well emergencies have come and now they must pay the price. Companies like nintendo (like many japanese companies) focus on small growth relative to their western counterparts.... and focus on making sure they have enough saved for rainy days. While their stock isn't too much to write home about vs other western companies.... they are the ones who survive in the end when times like now happen. Fate favors the prepared my friend, take care out there.

Nintendo is taking a smarter route about this all things considered. But even considering the circumstances around everything, it's kind of like suing to ban a kitchen knife manufacturer for stabbings. Yes, the end user can use the knife to commit unlawful activity, but unless you go full-on Minority Report, you can't anticipate who's going to use it unlawfully.

The PS3 update is to be compatible with newer Blu-ray discs as newer encryption keys are needed. This is also clearly stated on the system software update page. 🤷‍♀️

Nintendo sounds like it's leveraging the DMCA anti-circumvention clause in the Yuzu case, specifically arguing that they're trafficing in tools, or at least providing means, to circumvent their copy-protection. This is untested legal waters for video games, but most of the case law for DVDs has ruled firmly in favor with manufactures going after people who made DVD ripping products. If the judges agree that ripping video games is a parallel kind of case, it's going to be a pretty strong case for Nintendo going in, since they would largely just need to show the Yuzu team was facilitating a violation of the DMCA by giving out exact instructions and links to tools, and this led to monetary damages. It honestly sounds like it could shape up to be a rough case for Yuzu

Again. GAMEFREAK ARE NOT IN CHARGE OF THE POKEMON IP! Gamefreak are merely contractors. They just develop games. They have no say in the Pokemon IP or when a game gets released or how long games are developed for. Onus is on TPC and Nintendo to arm GameFreak with the best tools and schedule, so it is incumbent on them as full IP holders to bring respectability back to the Pokémon name. I 100% blame Nintendo and TPC for how technically deficient the Pokemon games are on the Switch.

That would explain as to why the Pokémon community only received apologies from Nintendo and Game Freak about the horrible state of Pokémon scarlet and violet,also the other 7 Pokémon games have run absolutely fine on both my nintendo switch oled and my nintendo switch lite.

@@cbgg1585from what I understand Nintendo just leaves Game Freak to do their thing. It’s mainly TPC that puts the pressure on Game Freak. Makes sense seeing as Game Freak are essentially the gate keepers to every other Pokemon related product. No new games no new toys, cards, movies, shows, etc. Regardless of who is responsible yesterday clearly showed us their dev cycles are being lengthened which is appreciated.

Nintendo going after the fact that the Yuzu team tells people how to circumvent their security is the clear legal leg they can stand on. Had Yuzu not provided any direct guidance on how to go about getting keys and so forth, there would be no legal liability. Don't get me wrong. I love Yuzu and am one of their supporters. I am simply noting the weak link in their case. Even if Nintendo cuts Yuzu down, it won't stop other projects from picking up where they left off. Emulation is sort of a hydra situation, after all.

With the controversy of them selling users' personal data and having some of their "therapists" not being fully certified, there are better options out there. I understand it's more to raise funds and make more profit for the channel, but with this one dealing with actual serious mental health issues and conditions, that's something that should've been better researched before signing the deal. With how the world currently is, everyone deserves to have professional yet affordable counseling and therapy, and not the last thing they need is having to worry about their information getting released without consent 🧠

The Pippin was super expensive at the time and there weren't very many games. But the technology was way ahead of its time with online play and surf browsing. In fact, Microsoft did copy a little bit of the interface from the Pippin to the Xbox and Xbox 360.

Dude, CEOs can be massive DIKS! lol (not like they aren't already, in many cases) I remember in a previous job, we had a team building, and the CEO came out and was saying all the right things and how the company was doing well and financials were great etc...and I sht you not, barely 2-days passed after which most of the staff received termination letters! LOL That probably was the scummiest experience I had in a company and with a "CEO". On the plus side, the company went bankrupt soon after! sadly the top management team got away with plenty of funds, some even started their own business....

The Nintendo Lawsuit against Yuzu does scare me a bit. Everyone is focused on the case itself, but my fear is Nintendo is trying to set a precedent against emulation. Maybe I'm off here, but the language in their documents is clear that they are calling emulation and backing up your own games illegal. I watched a bit more and it's clear that they aren't going after emulation but still I feel like there has to be something more than just this emulator since there is another Switch emulator out there. Also I think it's a very dangerous precedent to set to say that you can't explain how to do something online. Yuzu is in trouble in part for showing users how to decrypt their games? Freedom of information is important

TOTK wasn’t playable officially on Yuzu until the game came out. It was user patches that allowed it. You can’t sue yuzu for users miss using a product.

Disagree, it’s Pokémon TCG in a more available format. Standard NFTs you can’t do much else but own them, sell them to someone, etc. With this, while it may be the same concept as NFTs, trading cards came first and have additional purpose by being able to play matches with other people. That is almost saying games like Shadowverse or gacha games are like NFTs.

I was shocked to see there was a new update available. I've been using my old PS3 Super Slim the past couple of months. It's all I really had at the moment to game on. I wonder if the update screwed something up because literally right after my console updated, my PS3 stopped reading discs. Could just be bad timing.

I’m not surprised Nintendo is going after Yuzu specifically. I’m only surprised they didn’t do it sooner. I’m okay with emulation because it preserves old games for future generations to enjoy, but emulating games currently in production, games that haven’t been discontinued and delisted yet is too grey of an area for me. I feel like that’s too close to piracy. If the Switch 2 isn’t backwards compatible with Switch 1 cartridges, then by all means, use a Switch emulator to your heart’s content. Otherwise, just bite the bullet and buy the Nintendo console. At least it’s cheaper than an Xbox or a PlayStation.

Concerned with your better help sponership. Get the bag but I feel like a lot of KZfaqrs are not considering the negative sides and potential issues for people's mental health information getting spread out through third party links. It is a concern that has been touched on but not fully addressed by the company among other issues with with the therapist selection. I think it's okay to be sponsored by them if that's what you choose to do but I would at least pay a little more attention to the concerns that that app may bring on people who don't know the HIPAA issues.

Not just Pokemon fans but video game fans in general are impatient and entitled. You put this insane expectations on games and when they rush round the market you complain that it was rushed. Then when they take their time and give you a teaser trailer everyone is like what a waste of time, I should have gotten the full gameplay trailer with a release date of tomorrow .

When TotK leaked it ran like dogshit on Yuzu. Constant crashes, slowdowns and weird texture errors. That's why I hacked my Switch to play it early. However I already had preordered the Collector's Edition of the game. There are a lot of studies that show that piracy does have no influence on sales. It actually can effect them positively. At least when your game is any good.

What’s crazy to me is I just hooked up my PS3 again yesterday to play some older titles, to see a system update in 2024 is wild. But one meaningful update I’d like to see is allowing the PS3 to display PS5 trophy lists, it’s bizarre knowing I have more but it isn’t showing them. Also, the company behind Infinity Blade said they’d go back to Shadow Complex after they were done making them, but they never did… but now maybe? Shadow Complex 2 would fit well in a era of popularity for MetroidVanias

That's good news about Infinity Blade. I was surprised Epic never did a port and put it in their game store, if for no other reason than having one of their classic IPs available. It was originally shown on stage at the iPhone 4 reveal event to show Unreal Engine running on iOS. And it looked incredible compared to what we were used to as mobile games in 2010

@@knowledgeseeker4116 They aren't compatible with the modern OS. When Apple forced everything to go 64 bit, Epic couldn't justify the cost to update the games and pulled them instead. They weren't the only ones that did that as there are MANY iOS games I lost access to from the early days of the platform

Emulation is fully legal and also Yuzu themselves never did any piracy. But monetarily business wise it was predictable the news was eye opening for sure

Man, it feels so weird how the ps3 is so old yet still gets software updates. Do you think that sony will make a PS3 classic, but you know, better than the playstation classic?

yuzu is like the Megaupload situation: you can put something up, just distance yourself from the illegal stuff, and don't tell people to use such tools to do that or how to do it
