I've been hearing people hating on the idea of exclusives for a while now, but I don't really understand the idea of getting rid of the idea of exclusives. If every single game is on every system, then what's the point on even having more than one system on the market?

Exclusives are what sells the console at the end of the day. Some second and third Parties also help but its the games they make that they usually advertise to buy the system. I don't see Nintendo porting games to PC, rather I think it is more likely they might make games specifically for PC in the same vein as Super Mario Run or Animal Crossing Pocket camp.

I've always viewed exclusives as a good thing for business and both a good and bad thing for consumers. Good for businesses as they draw people to a console and also allow for smaller companies to be funded and release games that otherwise may never see the light of day, bad for consumers as it can cut out a portion of gamers that may not want to buy a console for a single game (I want to play the new Indiana Jones but won't buy an Xbox for just that for example), and good for consumers as an exclusive is programmed purely for a single set of specs and can, in theory, create more polished games which is never a bad thing for gamers

Patcher is tone deaf, in my opinion. Especially with the theater comment. Yes, theaters don't do that, but the non-exclusive route has its problems: where one company can prevent certain films to honor contracts to be in certain theaters because of company/ studio influence and Hollywood politics. Fully doing away with a truthful exclusivity paves the way for backroom exclusivity or exclusive influence through time and what not.

Ahhh Michael Pachter... that's a name I've not heard in many years. Almost nostalgic. This exclusive argument seems to be mainly propped up by Microsoft and their fans, to try and coerce Sony and Nintendo to follow their lead by making their games multiplatform. But they're doing that because hardware sales are low and Game Pass has plateaud, Sony and Nintendo especially are still managing fine with it.

World's away from reality. 1 the 30% cut with no development costs is insanely profitable. 2 nintendo doesn't overspend on development the way other companies do. They go after gameplay over visuals. 3 Their games just sell better. They might have the best track record of any publisher. 16million copies of a game is normal for them. 4 every game they sold off their hardware would make 30% less, meaning they would need more sales to make the same profits.

From what I've seen in recent years, Xbox needs to expand their IPs to other platforms just to stay profitable. It would be good to see some Sony games to be on Xbox and Switch. But how many games for Xbox, PS5 and PC are excluded from Nintendo simply because of Nintendo console limitations? Nintendo does what Nintendo needs to do regardless of the industry's situations. And it's a business model that works. They are the market leader right now because of it. How much of this discussion about console exclusivity is relevant?

PS and Xbox who make games that can cost 100mil dollars or higher, yeah, makes sense that they would need to multiplat some series to make up the cost. Nintendo tends to make games at lower costs. If they can sell about 5mil units, for some games, it is enough to break even for others games they made more than expected. Take BotW, that was probably one of Nintendo's most expensive games but i bet they were hoping for a minimum of 10mil units sold to break even (could be less, who knows).

XBox’s model is because their console wasn’t selling enough, hence their 1st party games weren’t selling enough. Nintendo’s strength is their exclusive IP, Sony is stronger in that area too. However you brought up the development costs, and that’s exactly right. Games with a budget of a blockbuster movie need to sell a lot, so they need to cast a wider net. First party exclusives are important that's what you remember about the consoles that's why you buy the consoles. Nintendo is dependent on first party games. You must have a Nintendo console if you want to play Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Splatoon, Kirby, Xenoblade and much more. The fact that Microsoft is now going 3 party is especially good for Nintendo because they now have more third party games. Hi-Fi Rush may not be on Switch, but I'm sure it will be saved for Switch 2

Xbox is using the same gimmicks as Sony and that's why both are failing to keep up with Nintendo. If they just made good first party games and not try to nickel and dime people every chance they get they would'nt be doing so bad, that goes for Sony too. Nintendo isn't perfect but the developers and even the executives there have their priorites straight when it comes to game development. People play their first party games cause their often damn good and consistent in quaility too, if Micorosoft and Sony would put in the same effort their first party games would sell.

PlayStation needs to sell their games to PC because they realized that they hit a cap in their userbase. Their data shows that the max a top-selling game can get in the PS4 generation is around 25 million. Thats not good enough when the PS4 sold over 100 million. Whereas Nintendo's cap is around 60 million for a top-selling game.

Exclusivity has nothing to do with game sales at all, it only limits them. The only thing exclusivity does is boost console sales at the cost of game sales. Imagine the amount of money Nintendo can save not suing everyone for fixing all the frame rate issues and bugs in their games and instead just sell the games on PC lol.
