The Nintendo Switch dock does not have an Ethernet port. To fix that problem, a USB to Ethernet adapter is required to get a wired connection to your router. Today we will be looking at three adapters which include the Switch branded Hori adapter as well as a USB 3.0 adapter.

While they're at it, I'd re-design the whole thing. The first thing is obviously adding a fan, then, moving the circuit board/USB3/power/hdmi away/up to stop blocking one of the rear vents. Add softer lining material for the insertion points. At a push, upgrade the USB3 dock port to be the high-end one that allows pci-e, then, add an X1 gpu inside the dock for Sli. They could also upgrade output to 4k (even if it is upscale) while they're at it. On the firmware side, we need external storage drive support as well as overclock option for "Pro-dock" users.

I'd say the reduced latency of using wired over wireless for online play is a lot more important than having your new game download 10 minutes faster or whatever. But as wired gets you both, it's pretty much a no brainer. Wireless has many benefits, but performance for gaming is not one of them.

The reason why they are 'overpriced' is because it has the actually Nintendo brand which means it will work, and for average consumers that's what they care about. They know that if they buy a Nintendo branded adapter or controller or anything that it will work the way it's intended. That convenience is why they can price units higher then generic ones.

Completely not mentioned is the fact only certain USB LAN adaptors will even work with the Switch. UGREEN Network Adapter USB 3.0 to Ethernet RJ45 Lan Gigabit Adapter for 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Supports Nintendo Switch Black www.amazon.com/dp/B00MYTSN18/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_wGEJzbE3P2HV6 apparently works. I definitely feel like Nintendo will eventually make a new dock for the Switch but the question is what exactly will it do. Because of the design of the Switch simply "adding a fan" in the dock wouldn't really help to cool the Switch as the processor is completely isolated from the exterior of the system with no direct way to influence it externally. Now, if some genius figured out how to add addition CPU/GPU power to the dock that could transport THROUGH the USB-C connection and make a meaningful difference then i'd be amazed but I honestly think it'd cost as much as the system itself to do. As such, I find it much more likely that Nintendo will just put out a system refresh in a couple of years which will feature the new Nvidia Tegra processor in the system which will mostly go towards providing improved battery life but like the New 3DS could also provide slight improvements over the stock system. All the gaming companies seem to go this route with their system refreshes and Nintendo has not been an exception in their handheld market.

I doubt USB 3.0 speeds for the back port have been enabled. Nintendo said it wouldn't be in the day one update. USB 2.0's max transfer rate of 480 Mbps shouldn't have bottlenecked any of those adapters anyway. The fast Ethernet ones should be capable of 100 Mbps down and the HORI one (gigabit LAN) should have given you your full bandwidth of around 120 Mbps down. I bought a TRENDnet USB 3.0 to gigabit LAN adapter and I only get 34 Mbps down and 7.5 up on the Switch. The same adapter, same Ethernet cable run, got 122.66 down and 13.07 up connected to a USB 2.0 port on my laptop. Of course we don't know what servers Nintendo is using for speed tests so we can't say that's not a limiting factor. Something is definitely screwed with the wireless though. Hopefully it's driver related. Nintendo admitted there is at least one glitch in the WiFi driver that causes a spike in CPU usage. The whole OS is very beta. Drivers included, I'm sure.

Andrew Ames Which wifi connection type are you using? YMMV, but the Switch does support 5GHz, and I've been getting really good speeds while operating 5GHz N and AC (at least, as long as the modem itself isn't crapping out >_>).

@andyinsames 7 жыл бұрын
I've tried both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. I retested all three connection types (wired, 2.4 and 5 GHz) before replying and now I'm getting wildly inconsistent results. When I tested before one weird thing is that the NAT Type would change from test to test. I've never had an issue with games/systems detecting this router as having anything but an open NAT type. When I tested again just before typing this I found that now my NAT type is always shown as 'A' and wireless speeds are generally better. However, the test results are all over the place. Let's get upload out of the way since I already have a headache. Upload speeds were all over. Typically between 4 and 9 Mbps on 2.4 and 5 GHz even 4ft from the router with line of sight. Wired wasn't significantly better. Using my OnePlus One (OPO) as a point of comparison, I got around 13 Mbps up in my bedroom which is about 25 ft away from the router, through two walls. When testing a wired PC I get around 13 up as well. Download Speeds, given in range for Switch due to inconsistent results (OnePlus One using speedtest.net): *2.4 GHz, 4 ft from router* Switch - *10 - 32 Mbps* OPO - *50 Mbps* *2.4 GHz, 25 ft from router, through two walls* Switch - *0 - 25 Mbps* (0 because sometimes connecting at this distance took several attempts or it would seem to connect but it would be unusably slow and connections would time out. When it worked it worked well enough though) OPO - *45 Mbps* *5 GHz, 4 ft from router* Switch - *17 - 30 Mbps* OPO - *89 Mbps* *5 GHz, 25 ft from router, through two walls* Switch - *24 - 39 Mbps* (WTF, why is it faster on a 5 Ghz network when farther away?!) OPO - *85 Mbps* *Wired* Switch - *32 - 35 Mbps* (WTF, why so slow? One time it tested at 76.5 Mbps. Still, way slower than it should be) Any PC on my network - *122 Mbps* Using a DNS emulator, I loaded up fast.com in the Switch's web browser and did many speed tests on all connection types. The test results were still inconsistent but they weren't out of range compared to the speed test in the Switch's settings as outlined above. I had two Switch's for a short time and my other Switch had similar results on the 2..4 GHz network as the one that I've kept. I might test my roommate's later but I think that the Switch's networking drivers are borked. Is anybody getting their full bandwidth out of the Switch? Saying you get X Mbps down/up isn't that useful without knowing how much you get from a wired PC on your network and how the Switch tests compare to other wireless devices tested from the same location as the Switch.
@KillerRaptorr
@KillerRaptorr 7 жыл бұрын
I hope you all know that routers also use a ability that balances out bandwidth ether from wireless to wired. This means if your PC is doing something, or someone else,etc the bandwidth of the other device when testing will drop in performance. The more devices there are. the more decrease each will get to balance act the devices to give a natural flow of internet access. Only times when you download will you see a heavier load, but it differs from the demand.

No. When you get a 'Fast' ethernet 10/100 you'll never see 100mbps on those. their normally halfed of performance. Not to mention some may run on half duplex vs full, but they don't tell you this when you buy them. Same goes for 10/100/1000. It may run at half (500mbps) and that i still mainly depending on how distance you are, how many connections you have, etc. And that's direct wire. Lets not forget we do have AC to Ethernet outlets now that also reduce half performance of ethernet band. PS4 limits it's bandwidith around 20-40mbps. Seeing nintendo have byond 50 is better then Sony's PS3 and PS4 systems net. But lets not forget that most consoles barely use 5-20mbps for online play. So anywhere beyond such is more then great. Even for when people are hosting a game room like in COD. anyone having 10mbps normally becomes the host for it's good internet. Now it being stable differs. And some consoles will have less mbps income to keep a more stable connection. So even tho the PS4 only reads 20-40mbps even tho you have 200mbps+ this means it'll have a stable flow of 20-40 vs dipping all the time.

SpawnWave. Love your channel. In this case, and even better test for those more technically inclined would be to try out these adapters while looking at their router. What they should be looking for is: a) Link (no pun intended) rate ( 10Mb, 100Mb, 1000Mb, Auto / Half / Full Duplex) for the port for each adapter (one may be negotiating at 100Mb and another maybe at 1000Mb) and with tools and from a PC also connected to the wired network running things like pathping (for those of you that are Windows users) against the internal IP assigned to the wired connection of the Switch to look for this such as packet loss. Although a good indicator, Download / Upload speed testing vs Internet will yield bandwidth results but not actually tell you the "quality" of the connection. Other factors also include those then hooking this to things like a PLC adapter ( power over ethernet ) and any other intermediate devices that may be in the way. For gaming, what you are looking for more than bandwidth is latency and packet loss for a connection which can really impact online gaming and this test will not yield the results that you need. Sometimes it may be better to get an adapter which yields maybe lower download speeds but has more trustworth data transit. Just my 2cs. Keep up the good work!

It seems, this USB 3.0 to RJ45 Adapter from ANKER doesn't work for the Switch (at least right now). When connected to the USB 3.0 port of the dock, the adapter starts blinking and exchanges data according to the LEDs, but the Switch itself cannot connect to the internet successfully. And yes, that same LAN cable works for my SteamLink next to my Switch, so that one isn't the problem. I also tried the tips you gave in your video to turn off the Switch (several times) and then put it back to the dock. I tried everything I could think of, so I guess, this ANKER adapter just isn't supported.

If you're having upload speed problems with your internet then it's possible that one or more of the upstream carriers in your area are trying to speak through interference which would show up as packet loss; as such a simple packet loss test should be able to answer the question for you. Like all the cable companies now, Comcast utilizes channel bonding under the Docsis 3.0 standard to achieve these higher speeds over their carriers and as such if there is interference on a few of them (either upstream or downstream) you can still utilize the service but speeds may suffer. Actual speed tiers may vary per region so maybe your area simply doesn't have enough upstream carriers but I know HERE that people who get the 150mbps speed tier are supposed to get upload speeds of around 20mbps and we have 16 downstream carriers and 4 upstream carriers to accomplish this.

Exactly! This test is completely useless because he's not actually doing a benchmark on the thing he thinks he is. What he's benchmarking is Nintendo's servers not the adaptors themselves. I have an official Nintendo LAN adaptor from the original Wii. If I plug it into a PC I can easily get 95Mbps using iperf.
@Skywake
@Skywake 7 жыл бұрын
Speedtest isn't necessarily reliable either because for all we know the browser itself is slowing it down. The only way to test network speed properly would be to transfer a file over your local network. Which is something Nintendo won't allow you to do. Well, until a game with download play comes out. But in any case, based on teardowns the Switch has a dual-band AC1200 radio. So in theory it should be getting ~300Mbps after taking into account funky WiFi marketing maths. Which isn't that bad at all especially when compared to the Wii U (30Mbps). LAN adaptors? They're pretty much all going to be either 100Mbps or 1Gbps. Either way, the reason you'd want a LAN adaptor isn't for download speeds. The main advantage of a wired connection is that it doesn't suffer from ping spikes in the same way a wireless connection can. It also doesn't have issues with range or interference. Speed isn't the reason a wired connection is better. For a game console at least.

I just tested with my Switch on WiFi and then on the knock-off Wii ethernet adapter I have. I got anywhere between 27-37Mbit down,, 10 - 12Mbit up. You skipped the stats for wired ping results, from your numbers... wireless: 6.6av, 20.6stdev wired: 1.25av, 1.16stev As you said, wireless is probably fine for most people. But the issue with wireless is mostly that difference in pings. Not necessarily the average but the variation. The occasional packet on wireless can be 100ms+ which in games can be pretty significant if you're unlucky enough for it to happen during a critical frame in a fighting game or something. Ideally you want the link between you and the server to be

Significantly lower upload speed is common in non-business internet connections. Most consumer connections and devices are asymmetric and are optimized for higher download speeds, rather than upload. They do this mainly because customers most value high download speeds, most people don't upload much.

Seriously? Nintendo sells a handheld with a docking station that doesn't include an ethernet adapter? The fact that Nintendo doesn't feel the need to include ethernet ports on their consoles and handheld docking stations, just shows how out of touch they are. Or maybe it shows that most people who buy Nintendo products don't care about performance anyway.

Wireless connections are the norm these days, but at least they included an option for a wired version if you want it. That's why instead of increasing the Switch's price point, the could add an accessory that was optional.

Thanks for the information, Spawn! Although, as stubborn as this sounds, I would still go for the original, Nintendo licensed one from Hori, even though it's a bit more expensive. It's hard to trust and ensure quality over time with non-officially licensed products (particularly talking about electronic devices for Nintendo systems). I understand that's not necessarily the case all the time, but I learned that the hard way with my GameCube. I had bought two generic controllers from Hong Kong for $15.00 for the sake of not paying more. I damaged the internal fan over time and did not permit the console to turn on.

Im pretty shure about that but its worth testing. In fact a better test would be to place the ethernet adapter on the Switch and ping it from a lan connected pc from the same network. That would be a more significant test
@alexatkin
@alexatkin 7 жыл бұрын
There is also a flaw with this video as he doesn't mention if he did multiple tests. The difference in speed between the adapters is meaningless unless he repeated each test several times, as with it not ever maxing his connection its clearly bottlenecking on the console or Nintendos servers so WOULD vary from test to test even with the same adapter.
@nameless-user
@nameless-user 7 жыл бұрын
Alex Atkin I'm guessing there's a potential bottleneck in communicating with Nintendo's servers when comparing with the Speedtest results. They test by connecting to the nearest server; if you select a distant or overseas server, speeds almost always suffer. I've seen similar things happen with my other consoles not fully utilizing all available speeds (avg. 100Mbps vs. +250Mbps available, though will sometimes jump to full speed), and even my laptop on occasion.

Im late af, but afaik 2.4ghz should be used. Also afaik the switch doesnt even support usb3 properly. So while you may get better bandwith with the 3.0 connector. Its not making use of its potential at all. If you have a good router capable of delivering 50+ Mbps over wifi the switch should be that fast. I have no need for this adapter with my wifi. That being said, i do prefer hard connections. Just sucks that your only getting half of what you could because nintendo doesn't do proper hardware updates for performance or real stability. Only their "stability" which really just means patching ways console hackers are doing stuff.

USB2 can provide over 400Mbit/s. Most USB2 ethernet dongles are capped at 100Mbit/s, and many are half-duplex (50Mbit/s in each direction simultaneously). USB3 runs at 5Gbit, and USB3 ethernet dongles are generally gigabit. Even at half duplex, that's 500Mbit/s. Running that on a USB2 port should still give you in excess of 350Mbit/s capability. Also, basically every USB gives you terrible upload speed even with good download speed. For instance, we had 24 down by 1.5 up with AT&T a while ago. A neighbor has around 150 down by 8-10 up with Spectrum. I'm in the Midwest USA, for reference.

*The testing methodology in this video is not good.* A valid test would have included transferring files to another computer in the same network (Which you control) over a 10/1000 connection and verifying transfer speeds. For example I get 112MB (Megabytes) per second bidirectional transfer rates using 3 different USB Gigabit adapters (USB2 and USB3) between my laptop and my local file server. Trying to use a server external to your network to measure speeds will *NOT* yield valid results since you are at the mercy of your ISP's network and the server you are connecting to which are wildly subject to change. For future videos, especially videos where you are testing things, attempt to remove as many variables as possible to provide useful results. If you had using better testing methodology and found that some adapters were performing better than others that would have been something to post.... as it stands now; not so much....

We have a fucking data limit on our internet and have no other options for changing it. It's fucking bullshit because they know that modern games take a fuckton two download. They are one of the worst companies in the world, always have been. We can't even get Verizon FiOS anywhere near us.
@andyinsames
@andyinsames 7 жыл бұрын
EPS5000 This has nothing to do with ISPs. It appears that wired and wireless networking on the Switch sucks ass. I get 125 Mbps down and 13 Mbps up from any wired computer on my network. My Switch is 4 feet (a little over a meter) away from my router with direct line of sight. I got 10 Mbps down and 5 up wireless. The phone I'm typing this on just tested at 42 down and 13 up from my bed room which is 30 plus feet from the router and has two walls in between. I got a USB 3.0 to LAN adapter and now I get 35 Mbps down and 7 up. Of course we don't know what server(s) Nintendo is using for their speed test. Maybe the wired results are being bottlenecked by the server. However, the wireless connection is definitely trash. If I use my Switch wirelessly in my bedroom the connection is so weak that the eShop sometimes fails to load due to the connection timing out. The Switch seemingly has the worst wireless radio of any device that I've ever used. The future of multiplayer gaming on the Switch is not bright. Hopefully the strength of the WiFi radio in the Switch can be adjusted via a system update. The only game I've played multiplayer is Fast RMX and it has been laggy in every match I've played. Fast Racing NEO multiplayer for Wii U was fine even though I could only ever find matches with people in Germany or UK. Fuck Nintendo's hardware. They need to stick to developing games. It would be so nice to not have to buy their shitty hardware just to play a dozen games or so. The SNES was the last console they produced that was sensibly designed.

I've tried two Switches. Same speed test results while docked, sitting four feet from the router. 10 Mbps down, 5 Mbps up. This is on 2.4 GHz. I don't use the 5 GHz band on my router. The USB 3.0 to gigabit LAN adapter that only managed 34 down, 7.5 up on the Switch did 122.66 down and 13.07 up on my laptop using a USB 2.0 port and the same Ethernet cable run. I think the drivers are just screwed up right now. I have another Switch I can test with but I'm expecting the same results. Maybe 5 GHz will give me better speeds but something is still fucked in the backend. No way should I be getting such slow speeds with the LAN adapter.

I have a USB 3 one and it has 3 USB 3 ports on it as well, so I end up with 3 USB 3 ports and 2 USB 2 ports for the dock and it was only £16.99 on Amazon. If anyone is interested it's called UGREEN Gigabit Ethernet USB. I would recommend that one over the Nintendo licenced ones.

You made me buy the USB 3.0 adapter. I already owned a 2.0 adapter but that huge boost is enough for me to spend the $15. Thanks

Good video. I would like to ask about trying out the USB 2.0 ports on the outside of the dock with all 3 adapters because if ext HDD somehow get supported, that one USB 3.0 port may likely get used for that. Either way, this is really pushing me to get a new adapter, as I have the kind of old gray one that you have used that I got way back in the Wii days.

What helped me speed up the connection a little was to change the MTU from 1400 to 1500, and then change the DNS to 008-008-008-008 / 008-008-004-004. It's still nothing amazing but it got me a few Mbps.

I'm pretty sure that white one you have is the official Wii LAN Adapter from back in the day--I have the same one that I've used for my Wii, Wii U, and now the Switch

I don't mind them excluding the Ethernet if you can buy your own for $10 on Amazon instead of them hiking up the price 2-5x. I feel the same way about storage space - add your own.

Ps. Will it lag due to conversion of Ethernet to USB? Any stuttering on a constant stream? I know for movies and web browsing it's no big deal, but in curious about live gaming.
