Right out of the box, you can access the Wii Menu. I had to update mine because I got an early Wii U Deluxe edition.

It came with a regular Wii sensor. If you have one already hooked up, you can use that too.

Wii U games will work from the start. Only people that need a firmware update are those we got the Wii U before the launch date.

GC games are coming to the e-shop as VC games eventually, but then you have to buy them agian of course.

Yes, the Wii games work on the Wii U when you run the Wii Menu on the Wii U.

In the Wii, you can transfer your game data to a SD card. Then, I plugged that SD card into the Wii U to finish the transfer.

It depends on the game. With Mario, when you pick single player, it shows up automatically on the Gamepad. But when you pick 2 players, you can't use the gamepad at all.

Nintendo is best of making backwards comatibility. Really since the wii is release you have the gamecube itself in the wii and for the wii u you get the wii itself!! Nintendo does put 2 game consels in one game consel, past and present. What a surprise. :)

I think you're asking if it will work on the Wii U gamepad? No. But when you run the Wii Menu, you have to use the Wiimote to play your Wii games or VC games.

My Wii sensor bar is connected to the Wii U. No issues with the sensor.

@M3rtyville you probably don't have a sensor bar hooked up to the wii u, you need it to use the pointer with the wiimote

I haven't. The Wii game I have left is Wii Fit but I haven't played that in some time. Aliens Colonial Marine comes out tomorrow. Still haven't decided which system to get it on.

On an update you can play on the game pad but you can't control with the game pad

Wii U is different than Xbox 360. I have both and enjoy both. Xbox has worked hard to build an online community. Wii U has very worth 1st party titles.

how is this guy's games all on the WIi Menu? I don't have them show up when I boot up the Wii channel. ...I haven't transferred any of my data to the Wii U either for that very reason. I want to keep my data on my Wii, yet when I boot up the channel, it's as if I never used my Wii *sigh* I hate technology

Hm. I haven't tried. When I'm the Wii Menu loads, I can only use the Wiimote. There aren't Wii Games that will utilize the Pro controller buttons anyway.

is the backward capability just for wii games, or can it also play gamecube games? that's the only thing keeping me from selling my wii and getting the wii u. also if there's a way you can transfer the VC games purchased on the wii to the wii u, since i don't wanna lose the save data on my games or rebuy them all over again

If you still play gamecube, you should keep the Wii because the Wii U can not play gamecube games. The Wii U can play VC Games purchased on the Wii.

When buying a Wii u Premium it states that you get a sensorbar, will i just have to buy both halves of the wii controller to be able to use it or will i also have to buy another sensor bar?

my son's Wii u won't go back to the Wii u menu from the Wii mode, it restarts but stays on the Wii mode when it powers back on. the screen goes black and says autobooting ds the goes back to wii mode

***** you CAN play this with the nunchuk but it takes time to get used to because the drift is in the wiimote, and items are in the nunchuk, WHY?!?!? that throws me off SO BAD! i dont think i would've had to buy a pro controller if they would just switch those 2 buttons, why couldn't drift and turning be on ONE SIDE?!?!?!? WHY YOU GOTTA SWITCHAROO LIKE THAT?!? so i DID buy a reproduced controller later, the analog sticks are a bit wobbly, but it gets the job done

The backwards compatibility is software based, not something you connect to the Wii U.

To all that wonder, YES YOU CAN PLAY WII GAMES ON THE Wii U, you can also put them into the system. If you start them you will be brought to a cut down Wii menu from there you can start the game like its on a regular Wii. With the update v4.0.0 YOU CAN ALSO OUTPUT THE IMAGE TO THE GAMEPAD, YOU CAN'T USE THE GAMEPAD BUTTONS THOUGH.
