A playthrough of "Wily Tower" as it appears in Capcom's 1994 compilation title for the Sega Genesis, Mega Man: The Wily Wars.
This recording is of RetroBit's re-release of the US NTSC version of the game.
The Wily Wars was a compilation of the first three Megaman NES games, all remade with a new 16-bit facelift. But, apparently not content to provide a mere collection of three of the best NES games ever made with fully updated graphics and sound, Capcom had one final, awesome addition for the fans: a brand new Sega Genesis-exclusive game, Wily Tower, that could be unlocked by completing Mega Mans 1, 2, and 3.
So how well does this generous bit of fan-service compare to the remakes?
Quite well, actually, even going so far as to throw a couple interesting twists of its own into the series' formula.
You don't win any weapons or items from beating the bosses in Wily Tower. Instead, at the beginning of each stage you are asked to customize your loadout of eight weapons and three items, and your choices include every power that can be won from the bosses in MM1-3.
There are only three robot masters and seven stages to tackle, but the game is roughly the same length as the first Mega Man.
The stages have more enemies and hazards than you'll find in the NES games, but the game is much easier overall. The weapons buffet is a great idea - it ups the potential replay value and it's fun to experiment with different weapon combos - but it totally trivializes the challenge. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though. It certainly didn't stop me from enjoying it.
The new enemy designs fit in nicely with the classic crew, and the inspired choice to base the new robot masters on characters from Journey to the West makes Wily Tower feel like a "real game" with its own identity instead of a cheap and soulless asset flip. So does the excellent new music.
Wily Tower shouldn't be missed by anyone that enjoyed the 8-bit Mega Man games. It feels like a lost title in the original series, and its quality far exceeds what you'd expect from a unlockable bonus in a compilation title.
It's hard to imagine the Capcom of today going this far above and beyond to please their fans. I mean, why give away what you could sell as a $20 piece of DLC?
