I gotta say, its really neat to see GameHut get so much attention. There's PLENTY of behind the scene looks at these big famous popular studios making their own stuff... But there's a certain very captivating perspective to be found from the accounts of the people running a small-ish studio that mostly just made licensed tie-in games and ports on a low budget with some publisher breathing down their neck even more than the big-time studios.

I never would have thought that discs weren't the way to go until now. Never have I thought of game units (discs and cartridges) as removable hardware not unlike that of a usb stick/thumbdrive. I always thought of them as just memory data file storage for reading and writing. In simpler terms, I always considered stuff you write a game onto to just be software holders. With this concept of games being hardware as well you can do so many more things with it. I just wonder if the switch cartridges will ever get any special treatment.

SNES cartridges in particular were always designed to be modular to expand the consoles capability, as part of keeping the cost of the base system down. The SuperFX chip is the most well known, but there were over a dozen other enhancement chips embedded in cartridges that vastly expanding the capabilities of the original SNES. This is laymans terms, but the SA1 chip in the Mario RPG cartridge essentially included an overclocked version of the SNES's own CPU inside it. About 3x the clock speed. From Sega, you have the SVP chip used for the Mega-Drive version of Virtua Racing, which could draw more polygons at about twice the framerate of the SuperFX chip (but it was absurdly expensive as well). Or of course, Sonic & Knuckles, which could actively patch the data from a Sonic 2 or 3 cartridge to expand and change those games.
@Liam30725 жыл бұрын
ValiantAleste _ It was common on the Dreamcast. Sonic Adventure, among others, included several wallpapers for your PC in the low-density part of the GD-ROM that could be read from a normal PC CD-ROM player.

@uglybad45 жыл бұрын
Fitting extra features on cartridges to meet the needs of specific games was definitely a cool idea, but in the case of modern consoles like the Switch, this is a practice that is no longer necessary. The console has all the features that these hardware extensions aimed to capture (like Bluetooth and 3D rendering capabilities), not to mention the disparity it would cause between physical and digital releases of games.

My personal favorites are when they secretly include extra games on the cartridge, hidden away with a code. The arcade conversion of Dig Dug on the Intellivision console had a hidden game - it was a modified version of Tron Deadly Discs, but using character graphics from the game Burgertime, specifically the little hotdog enemies. You'd push certain buttons on both controllers and then reset, and you could play Deadly Dogs. Another favorite was Battlezone 2000 on the Atari Lynx. The programmers made a nice little game but Atari's owners thought it went too far away from the original, and made them start over from scratch. But they secretly hid their original version in their new version, only accessible by a code. I could see why Atari didn't go for their original game, it had 2000 levels to go through and was a bit on the confusing side.

One thing you left out, on the yoshis island and star fox cartridges, the pins on the bottom of the cartridges have a “separate” pin set on the left and right. I’m assuming that’s where the fx chip comes into play but don’t quote me on that. I just know that games that used the fx chip had some weird “extra” pin sets on both sides that gave me the general idea that More was being read from the cartridge. Don’t know if I explained this properly, if anyone wants to chime in I’d appreciate it.

Trainer Blue GB Player did not support SGB enhancements but it did have some of its own. For example, some Game Boy Advance games supported force feedback when played with a GameCube controller. Also, it did not work with the GBA Video carts. IIRC, the GB Player holds opposing directions on the D-pad when the game first boots. Because normal GBAs can’t do this, the game knows it’s running on a GB Player. Majesco GBA Video carts will then display a message and refuse to play video since Majesco did not have home video rights.

They did. The SVP chip that was used in the Mega-Drive version of Virtua Racing. It was an incredibly powerful chip for what it was, quite a bit beyond the SuperFX chip. But it was also far too expensive to be practical on a per game basis. Though there were plans to make an SVP chip cartridge adaptor, so you only had to buy the chip once, and compatible games would just play through it, like a Game Genie.

There is also a handful of Famicom cartridges that have additional sound chips which increase the number of sound channels for those games. My personal favorite was Akumajo Densetsu (aka. Castlevania III) which dramatically improves the music. Unfortunately not only would you require the physical Famicom cartridges but also a Famicom on which to play them since the extra chip used a set of pins on the board which do not exist on the NES.
