Chicken is the broad term. Hen is female, and Rooster is a male. But i don't think it matters in a mario power up.

I would LOVE to see Chicken Mario in the game. In addition to a slow descent and fireballs, it would be fun if it allowed you to run across lava, similar to how the mini mushroom allows you to run across water. If you stopped running, you would die.

Peach was also supposed to be playable, but her dress was so hard to animate that Bowser Jr and the Koopalings threw a giant cake onto her and fled the scene. Also the four players would be roosters. Also, the playable toads have names! AlaGold and Buckenberry.
