A bit of passion is missing. The dancing is sublime and exquisitely artistic. There is however a subtle distance between the characters as if they are avoiding each other. As if they have no communication with each other. For this reason I believe ballroom dancing should teach the male to look at his partner and act as if he is leading not only with his actions but with his head and gaze and eyes also. The lady can keep her distance and that's coy and playful and part of the feminine mystique. The male however should act as if he cannot take his eyes off his partner due to his passion for her and his passion for the dance. Just my opinion on the way ballroom dancing comes across. It's a little sterile and impersonal.

Not in waltz and not with pre-teens. Waltz is about grace, elegance, and lines. The head position is key as it keeps a strong frame and exaggerates the long lines. Pause at any point and notice the long necks, slight lean backwards, and extension of the legs. That disappears if you look at your partner and ends up looking awkward as heck. There are moves you can work into waltz which add "passion" -- typically turns, dips, lifts, or open work where the male lead can look at, touch, or show interest in his partner, but... those take a lot of time out of a sub-two minute routine, they break up the flow, can easily run you into traffic, don't score well, and... they look creepy as heck when performed by tweens. If you want passion, watch the Latin dances or a tango. You'll also find more of a 'connection' in a playful Foxtrot, jive, or other "fun" dance.

@@1719456 They are still kids. They aren't giving up their youths. Kids at those ages learn quickly and reach those levels within a few years only a few times a week practices. They have plenty of time going to school, have friends, do other activities, etc. They just spend some of their free time doing ballroom rather than say video games. Ballroom isn't like high-level gymnastics, figure skating, or such where you really are giving up on regular school, twice a day practices, etc. Ballroom is also a great social activity, fitness, good for confidence, a positive introduction to the other gender and working together, etc. It is far less injury prone than most over competitive things or other dance (think cheerleading, ballet, etc.), there is no Olympic or high level professional aspect for most people. Most importantly, for most kids, dancing is fun. Of course these are 'regimented'. They practice sequences specifically for competitions. Stoic and joyless are a result of the waltz. That's how the dance is presented, scored, and supposed to look. You want to it to look graceful and effortless. It isn't a jive or Latin dance. Yes, their smiles are faked and choreographed. This is also intentional. Like any other stage performance, they need to be seen by judges/audiences who might be 50 or 60 feet away. Same with makeup and outfits. As for the outfits and movements... well... that's also a reflection of the dances. Latin dances is by definition seductive. The dances look pretty awful if you try performing them any other way. This said, it's clear they are performing a dance vs. actually being flirtation or seductive. No one for a second believes a 10-year-old boy is seducing his partner. Even when adults dance, it's clear it's a performance. Further, competitions are typically done in closed settings where everyone watching is a parent, judge, coach, or someone involved in dancing. Unlike, say cheerleaders or others doing something like that in public. I'd be more worried about high-level ballet, cheerleading, gymnastics, etc. where serious injuries, "stage" parents, pressure, etc. is causing serious harm.

@@1719456 People keep blaming the parents for the dancers outfits. It is the sport organizers and judges who influence the costume styles. I imagine contestants get deducted points if their costumes deviate from the norm.

@@smokindragn1 Again, you won't see smiles in a waltz. You aren't looking at your partner in closed holds. You look over each others shoulders, heads back, to elongate your lines. Your heads are also locked in place so you look goofy if you smile while your head/eyes aren't tracking anyone. You'd need open work -- rare in a waltz competitions as it takes precious time away from the dance and risks collisions. Even for my wedding dance, my wife and I only smiled at specific times when we could face each other -- open work, pauses, and dips... which you don't typically see in competitions. If you wants smiles... watch them during a jive, fast foxtrot, or other non-Latin dance where you can face each other.
