I was coming out of the bank the other day and I heard this melody. I stood in the doorway to hear a little more. As I walked along I hummed and stated to remember some of the lyrics. I looked up what I thought was the title and heard it after so many years. I was a child and my grandmother would sit at the table,no TV alone and sing softly. This was one of the songs. As I heard it I cried . It’s many years since I lost her, she raised me. Thank you Andy Williams for this lovely song and my memory 💐

@ J B - I hear what your are saying. However, I really don't think it was a simpler world. We were all so naive to what was REALLY happening in the world and even in the United States (i.e.: the truth about the JFK assassination, the Bays of Pigs fiasco, MLK assassination, RFK assassination, the U.S. involvement in Vietnam (it started in the 1950's!), the overthrow of Arbenz in Guatemala to protect U.S. Corporate interests (United Fruit Company), the overthrow of Patrice Lumumba in the Congo, the overthrow of Mossadegh in Iran, etc. I have been reading "true history" following WW2 and there was so much covert activity going on - it was truly damaging and even to this day, we (the United States, the world) are suffering the after effects of those covert activities. When you say covert activities you must say CIA Director Allen Dulles in the same sentence.

Singer Andy Williams had his peak career years during a time when weekly variety shows hosted by singers were the main evening TV fare. Music, particularly singing, was the main form of entertainment, both through media and when regular people got together. Andy often gets lost among his peers like Tony Bennet, Perry Como, Dean Martin, Robert Goulet, Mel Torme, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Steve Lawrence, Nat King Cole. But imo, he has one of best voices of all time. The timbre, his delivery, his musical choices, just superb. He deserves more attention and recognition.

Gorgeous story, scenery, actors and music! Beautifully romantic! The country was definitely simpler then! Less populated, cleaner, and much simpler-- no electronic devices and instant news. Classic cars were beautifully designed! The country is now a hectic argumentative Tower of Bable with different philosophies contradicting one another and loss of freedom and liberty. Can you imagine someone just building a "luxury shack" in Big Sur now? Back then women dressed beautifully- not cheap. People also had MANNERS and didn't wear pajamas to the grocery store. The era of great music ended in the late 70's with classic rock. As far as the envious argument of "privilege" many of these actors came to the US with nothing but talent and ambition.

Liz a beauty?! She's short, obese, with cellulite buttocks and dysfunction of the thyroid. If in the streets I wouldn't notice that she exists. But I'm from another generation.

I wrote a short story titled "The Shadow of Your Smile," which was later collected in the anthology Prism. The story recalls a time in Corfu when we "borrowed" a small fishing boat and headed into the Aegean Sea. My fellow pirate serenaded a lass with that song as I rowed toward the rising moon. It was quite a night.

The "Sandpiper" was released in 1965 in a brief window of time that was immediately preceded by JFK's assassination. Then everything really changed culturally in America. For those who lived then, it was a beautiful time and things would never be the same again.

The years I lived in Monterey were magical. So many women who were so beautiful in their own, individually way. This song brings it back to me in ways strange but delightful. I will not return there again. My life has changed and the magic can not be repeated. But I have the memories and Big Sur is not so far away.

When you can feel the tenderness of your heart's emotional renderings in a song it's truly special .This song and these scenes do just that for me .
