During a 'State of the Economy' discussion in the upper House, a fiery exchange occurred on the Rajya Sabha floor. The Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, responded sharply to former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram's queries. Chidambaram had asked if India's GDP would double to ₹200 lakh crore in the NDA's 'Amrit Kaal'. Here's what the FM said in response.

She mentioned the growth in employment ratio between 2017-18 to 2022-23 as 56%. I think that is not a very good metric as the COVID era saw a huge loss of jobs so it could very much be a return-to-normal instead of a true growth indicator. Also, the unemployment ratio many people have covered, takes into account only the people who are actively seeking jobs but there are many who have giving up hopes to lack of job opportunities. But, the GDP answer that she provided was good.

Then it is a fair comparision. We're not talking about the increase in employment but rather the percentage of people employed itself. So the statistics of improvement she shared stands true

If any one is from the market he will probably know that there are enough jobs and tremendous employment opportunities but not enough good and skilled workforce. Most of the people seeking employment are just not skilled and committed enough. People quitting jobs today is like changing dress and then saying there is unemployment. Those who have the skills and commitment go to places. I think government should work more with Universities and colleges to pepare job seekers with proper skills and right mindset.

India GDP timeline 1990 - $ 25 Billion 2000 - $50 billion 2013 - $ 100 billion .... 2023 - blank... Nirmala was asked to fill in the blank.. high GDP does not necessarily mean high welfare or well-being for the people. If goods and services are not sold, it means that there is either a lack of demand, a mismatch between supply and demand, or a problem with the pricing or distribution of the products. This could lead to lower profits, lower incomes, lower consumption, lower savings, lower investment, and lower growth in the future. Therefore, GDP is not the only indicator of economic performance or development, and other factors such as income distribution, poverty, inequality, health, education, environment, and happiness should also be considered.

NS might not be a super economist like MMS, but she is a far better Finance minister than MMS. Finance was handled well during the pandemic. There is zero scams and zero corruption at the top level. Poor lady has not understood the question. Mr PC asked: Will 100 lakh crore double to 200 lakh crore? She answers: it will be 100 lakh crore which means no growth in GDP BUT ONLY STAGNATION. It may not be the case. There will be a marginal increase thanks to unbridled inflation in the last 10 years. If we neutralise, it will be negative growth. In case it has stagnated at 100 crore or gone less,after neutralisation the growth rate suffers a steep down fall . Probably the result of difference between Madurai Railway Mixed school and the Howard school.

Chidambaram asks if we will hit 200 lakh crores by 2023-24. This is ₹200 trillion (1 lakh crore being 1 Trillion), or about 2.4 Trillion USD. We are already around 3.75 Trillion USD. The question seems moot or Chidambaram has made an elementary mistake. Am I missing something obvious? I am surprised that Seetharaman did not call him out on it. It is an understandable lapse for a layman but not for an erstwhile finance minister. Chidambaram suggests that everybody knows the answer, but does he know the question he himself is posing? Edited 1 day later: He may be talking about Real GDP as opposed to Nominal GDP, which was not explicated. That would explain the discrepancy.

bhai please try to understand GDP at Constant Prices. Thats what he asked. And thodi aur tasalli ke liye on excel sheet, year wise annual nominal gdp ka growth rate nikal ke dekhen jo 2004-2005 ke constant price pe ho na ki 2011-12 ke base pe which was adjusted to make it a standard practice and it enhance gdp growth rate by almost 200 basis points. this way you can do your own gdp calculation. Then perhaps we will get to know what the corrupt previous fm was talking.

Despite all his faults, the question posed by Mr Chidambaram was a simple and straight one. The reply by the FM, instead went around beating the bushes without answering his question. The reply was simple yes or No. if No, why and what will be the GDP 23-24. By reading out irrelevant statistics, the FM has not answered what was asked for. Surprising that various comments praising FM as if she has presented something deserving a Nobel Prize.
