@Liam Beyer you're actually wrong here too.... of course the first one was before the lyric change and he would use different words on the occasion.... but he did get tired of playing that song like every time, so he would screw it up or sing it different because of that.... he even talked about it in a magazine interview.... the one where he sings it in a low deep voice is a prime example of him bored with teen spirit.... he also stopped it halfway at a concert

The baritone version was from top of the pops, this was nirvanas way of sticking it to the man when told the instrumentals would be overdubbed and only the vocals would be sung live... check it out, as a passionate fan of all Kurt’s work, I think it is the epitome of what he stood for

The main reason pitch change, was that in 1992 they started play a half step down. Then as 94 came around, Kurt began to suffer from severe heroin withdrawal while in Europe, and was suffering from bronchitis. He was so fed up with being on the road sick, that he blew his voice out towards the end of February. The last show in Munich is very hard to listen to. His voice is so cooked.

Over 30 year old memory here but I thought he did it because they made them play the music track instead of playing live and to give that away he didn’t even bother to make chord shapes and just moved his ✋held open up and down the neck . He was mocking mtv (maybe it was for snl) not allowing real live music .

Damn poor Kurt, how could he not score in the early 90s? Jerry Garcia wouldn't take the stage when he was sick from withdrawals until Rock Scully (manager) would cop dope in the audience or wherever necessary. Just like for Nirvana Unplugged I was told Kurt was sick and nervous taboot as the unplugged gig was a big possible risk. Kurt said he ain't going on unless he gets dope and Mtv people had no idea how to score so they tried whatever they could and Amy from mtv had valiums of which Kurt took 4. Then he was so tired sleepy that he took Ritalin. When you watch Unplugged pay attention to Kurts Jaw, as the show goes on his jaw moves around like someone on amphetamines does... I have this on good word from a union stage hand who worked the set at the studios in NY that day...

I have box sets and their early work before they were famous. I like almost all their songs and new (obviously as anyone else would) that both his voice, singing, and their music changed over time.

The 2 changes I heard were... 1- Kurt got his lyrics together to what the final version that appears on the album would finally be 2- The quality of the sound guys doing the mix at these live performances On a side note I think it was the last clip from '91, the way he was singing and they were performing was a protest to the show they were on producers...in other words they intentionally played and sang like that to piss them off.

His vocals at Halloween at the Paramount are some of the best he ever performed imo.

I know this has been said already but a few things happened. His voice never changed. It makes a huge difference when you actually use good stage equipment - microphones, etc. Also as someone else pointed out he played in E♭ in later concerts. The example where Kurt sings in a baritone was when they were more or less tired of their own song. It's also important to mention, a lot of Live performances have pre-recorded music on them and they ask the singer to lip sync to their own music live. I don't know if this practice is still common today, but I've seen more than one example where the music was pre-recorded.

@@Shadowboxing123 And? The things that you mentioned mean nothing. I never said that he ruined his voice. I said his voice and throat had damages. He was only 27 but he sang and hard, since he was a teenager. Unplugged was recorded in 93 and its UNPLUGGED, all the songs are in a softer way. In fact all the songs in that record are soft songs ( about a girl, polly, something in the way and so on) and the only real screams in that album is the final part of "where did you sleep last night". it is public knowledge that he had several health problems in the last year of his life, including voice and throat problems (such as laryngitis). Still, if you don't believe it, just listen to some songs from their last 94 live shows.

@@Shadowboxing123 he did ruin his voice. Not long before he died during the In Utero European tour a doctor told him he needs to take atleast a few months off and learn how to sing properly cause he's on the path of severely damaging his voice. He was constantly getting Bronchitis and sometimes would cough up blood after shows

About the theory that Kurt got tired of this song to the point of hatred... We played as street musicians in 2 consecutive summers. This meant that we played songs (many of which were 4 chord pop) for literally hundreds or even thousands of times. This amount of playing, the heat and the repetitiveness directly led to us speeding up, altering and sometimes even butchering a song for our own entertainment. I'd say some aspects of this notion is just a myth that adds to the idolization of Kurt ("OMG he wrote the best song ever but he HATED it!! woah!!) but some aspects can be definitely true.

the later versions the instruments are tuned down half a step, E flat instead of standard E for bass and guitar, the entire In utero album is tuned this way, making them have a lower tone and not as much of a strain on your voice,

He said he yelled from his stomach, and that he has some disease in his stomach, im not sure on all the details but that might be why his voice changed, his stomach was wearing out from all the yelling.

His throat was damaged the most as he frequently had bouts with Bronchitis and laryngitis. Due to his stomach condition he may not sing from his gut but push straight up from his diaphragm. Mix that in with regular smoking, heavy drug use and little to no technique in his singing
