It is truly worth making a trip to Bhavnagar, Gujarat, just for this unique experience. Every day at low tide, the waters of the Arabian Sea recedes 1.5 km and you walk 1km on the slushy ocean bed to the Nishkalank Mahadev Temple and return before the tide rises and covers the temple completely.
The time to visit depends on the tide timings. We went early in the morning before the sun got hot. It was the most enjoyable experience. The workers have dug a walkable channel in which ankle length water is flowing constantly. You can walk in it slowly or on the slushy path next to it, although at places it is slippery. But that's part of the experience.
The temple itself is a large open platform with 5 lingams said to have been worshipped by the Pandavas in repentance for having killed their kith and kin in the Mahabharata war.. There are priests but I really appreciated that they are non-intrusive. It was a stunningly peaceful and beautiful experience.
Lots of birds surround you, but it is careless of people to buy snack-packs for birds or bring puja related material and throw away plastic. If you see people throwing plastic covers around, don't just walk away. Please talk to them and also pick up what trash you can. That's what I did. We must remember that this IS THE OCEAN and the home of marine life. The sea is kind to allow us into her "home" and we must return it to her and her children without trashing it.
