good to have ND for bright snowy days when your ISO is already as low as it can go but the snow looks overexposed and you want to keep aperture wide open for sharpness

Can you please comment on sharpness? At 2:17 when you switched from Freewell to NiSi, the NiSi was just awfully soft. Did you miss the focus? Also nobody states the sharpness change on these filters.. Most look OK up to 35mm but longer lenses are horribly soft. Is the NiSi also soft? What I hate most about VND's are the extreme change in sharpness and nobody in reviews seem to talk about it.

I want to know this as well! I use a 24-600mm Sony RX10 IV, and the variable and single ND’s I’ve tried are only good up to 100mm for sharpness and drops off a lot as you go into the 600mm range.

@@chinitopinoy1726 600 is definitely way too long for these on lens filters. I bought the nisi filter but ended up selling it because with pocket 6k nisi was everything but “true color”. It was the worst filter i’ve ever used and I had to switch for a $15 filter just to get the day over with. Nisi turned the whole image red and turned all black tones to brown. I thought it was due to lack of IR filter in the Pocket but only nisi looked this horrible. I ended up buying a PolarPro Peter Mckinnon filter since this is pretty much the only high quality variND. Its pretty ok, enough sharpness and colors are like they should.

I really wish they would make a 6-9 stop true colour VND. I live in Canada which does get sunny and hot in the summer, and even now in the spring I need more than a 5 stop.

Great video, very informative. Please could you tell me about the filter coating? I’m currently using a K&F Concept nano-x which I was very please with but it appears the polarised layer is a stick on film. This is fine but the thing I don’t understand is why they put the film on the outside of the filter rather than the inside. Because of this, the slightest thing to touch the filter (lens cap doesn’t fit on these) causes a blemish on the soft stick on polarised element. Can you confirm its proper glass on the outermost element or the nisi or it will suffer the same issue?

I asked nisi what filter they recommend for a 16mm full frame lens with a 77mm filter thread and they said to use 95mm. It seems it is good practice to use a larger VND than the lens thread, especially with wider lenses? (Not to mention to save cost just having one larger set).

Hello Pascal, thanks to share this interesting video. Allow me 2 questions please: 1) Did you test also B+W VND? Do you think Nisi VND is better? 2) Why everybody always uses the lens hood to shoot in sunny days, then when guys use a ND filter, nobody use the lens hood anymore? I think it is a bad habit not to use a lens hood with an ND filter. Thank you.
@pascalbasel
@pascalbasel 2 жыл бұрын
I didn’t test the b+w. But can’t imagine that it gets much better as the NiSi one. You can’t use a lens hood together with an nd filter.
@ExploringWorldYouTube

Last two question please: 1) NiSi True Color is a new VND, intead B+W is older VND. Why do you think B+W VND is better than Nisi? 2) Anyway I'm using a VND (SLR Magic Reflex Mark II) with lens hood without problems, but I don't use the original one. I turn the round lens hoow instead of the filter cage. I'd like to buy a better VND and for this reason I'm asking questions. Thank you

Hey Pascal, I’m a Sony and Fuji shooter as well, fx3 and xt4, I recently got the Nisi 82mm for my sigma 24-70 dg dn and with the vnd by itself the colors are amazing and there’s no vignetting at 24mm. But there is a problem, you can’t stack any filters with it. I tried my tiffen black mist pro and the Nisi vnd filter together and there’s some vignetting and ghosting effects on the corners that dulls the image. So I drove down to Nisi’s headquarters in Santa Monica Ca to test out the swift system that they have, it’s basically you can stack a nd16 ( 4 stops ) on top of the 1-5 and it becomes 6-9 stops and also a 1/4 black mist filter on top. Well stacking 2 filters the vignetting is pretty bad and when you have all 3 filters stacked the image is unusable at 24mm and it doesn’t go away till you hit 50mm. So im thinking of going to the freewell magnetic vnd system, is the freewell color shift that bad compare to the Nisi? I like how there’s no color cast on the Nisi but the vignetting and uneven darkness kinda threw me off.

it looks like it takes away quiet a bit of sharpeness from the shot? :( why does no one talk about this or show how much sharpness is lost before and after
@pascalbasel
@pascalbasel Жыл бұрын
I didn't notice it, but many filmmakers actually want to reduce the sharpness a bit, usually by using mist filters. So many might not really care about that.

@pascalbasel

Kind of yes. VNDs are two CPL filters on top of each other, so you get the CPL effect. However, it's not recommended because you don't have control over it without also changing the exposure.

Why don’t they offer a 6-9 stop version as well? Outdoors in bright light, where I live, I tend to need the 6-9 (PMK VND) more than the 1-5. I’m going to try these but this is one concern of mine. Any idea if there’s a 6-9 coming?

I think sooner or later they will make a 6-9 stop. You can also stack it with any 16stop filter behind the vnd to make it darker.

What other use case is there? Soft water effects etc. is motion blur just drove to the extreme…
@D_O_M_A_
@D_O_M_A_ 3 ай бұрын
@@pascalbasel well if you were a photographer only then yes, but the video says ' for video creators'. Blurred water effects are a landscape photo style. Your shutter speed or angle is the last thing you would change to correct your exposure. Balancing your exposure requires ND if you don't want to compromise depth of field by closing the aperture or lose dynamic range from altering ISO. Only reason to alter your shutter angle is for rare and specifically motivated reason to have no motion blur or exaggerated motion blur. Other reason would be to control flickering in screens or lights. Otherwise it's never changed. Most people shoot with intention and control over the 3 corners of the exposure triangle. Meaning they won't change any of the aperture, iso or shutter for exposures sake. They are changed for stylistic reasons primarily. Leaving ND and control of light to manage exposure whilst building a desired look for a shot.
